I'm still kind of wishy-washy on Rex as an actual coach (as in prepping the team, making challenges at good times, clock management, etc.) but I think he's good at some of the less tangible and obvious things. Overall I think he really, genuinely wants to win a Super Bowl for the Jets and if he can instill that feeling in his players so they aren't just playing for their pay cheque that makes a huge difference. So overall I'm glad he's sticking around, I just hope they give him something resembling a real offence and see what he (or MM) can do with it.
His specialty is D, he should have a pulse of the O but he has an OC and offensive staff that can handle it. he made the right hire w/ Marty and he should trust him until he doesn't have a reason to. I am supremely confident w/ Rex as our HC, if we would start bringing in offensive talent we'd see more production. I expect that to happen this offseason.
watch the playoff gams, how many wasted TOs or bad challenges were there this past weekend? that stuff happens all the time, it is so overblown. we think it only happens to us b/c we are so focused on the Jets but it happens across the league. I would like to see him do better w/ challenges, sometimes his emotions get the best of him w/ the challenge flag. He needs to improve there.
no i am not. all the "circus" stuff is gone. rex is job status is solidified, sanchez will be gone, what is left to talk about except x's and o's?
Yes it is the point, there was no sense in firing Rex Ryan when: A - He had his best season coaching B - There were no replacements available The reason we have been a mediocre TEAM, is due to the player personnel and the bad contracts. We have good coaches - it is now time to bring in talent. Extending him was not "rewarding" mediocrity, "rewarding" him was seeing that the future is bright and the coaching is in place.
Well if you believe the initial reports that the Jets were hoping for a one year extension it appears that maybe they did in fact give Rex negotiating power with their media whoring of the locker room scene. I hope Rex takes us to a few championships but I am not overly optimistic about this news. If the team continues to miss playoffs, have a shitty offense and a declining defense he's probably locked in for a couple of years anyway. Hopefully we head the other direction.
This is from Cimini on Twitter Analysis: A compromise for Rex, Jets January, 16, 2014 Jan 16 2:30 PM ET By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com Recommend10 Tweet6 Comments0 Email Print A few quick thoughts on Rex Ryan's multiyear contract extension with the New York Jets, first reported by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter: 1. Window dressing: There's more to this deal than meets the eye. Because he had one year remaining on his previous deal, Ryan is now under contract for at least three seasons, through 2016. Ah, but this wasn't a typical contract extension. As Schefter reported, the deal is based heavily on incentives for postseason wins. Concrete details have yet to emerge, but it sounds as if Ryan accepted non-guaranteed money on the back end of the deal in exchange for an added year (or years), with a chance to recoup the difference by winning playoff games. Jets extend Rex Ryan SportsNationShould the Jets have extended Rex Ryan's contract? Will the team contend for a Super Bowl under his watch? Vote! ยป 2. So what does it mean? This smacks of a compromise. Initially, the Jets wanted to offer only a one-year extension. Ryan wanted more than a year. This contract is the best of both worlds. It's a one-year extension that looks like a multiyear extension. Here's how: If Ryan wins in the postseason in 2014 and/or 2015, he cashes in for 2016. In essence, he's betting on himself. He can enjoy the benefits of having added security -- or at least the perception of added security -- and the team is protected in the short term. If Ryan doesn't win a playoff game before 2016, the Jets can opt out of the deal. But let's be honest: No contract is fireproof. If he goes 4-12 in 2014, he won't make it to 2015. 3. 'Duck' hunting season is over: Even with all of its complexities, this contract removes the perception that Ryan will be coaching for his job in 2014. That was an ongoing theme throughout this past season, and the constant speculation chafed him at times, according to people close to the coach. The term "lame duck" won't be thrown around anymore. This sends a message to the fan base that the franchise is firmly behind Ryan for the long term -- or, shall we say, the quasi-long term. 4. Who'da thunk it? You have to hand it to Ryan. In the span of a few weeks, he went from the firing line to the cash line at the bank. After a surprising 8-8 season, he absolutely deserved an extension, but he parlayed wins against the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins into a potentially bigger score than your basic one-year extension. Owner Woody Johnson is obviously a huge fan. Not many coaches could turn three straight non-playoff seasons -- heck, three straight non-winning seasons -- into this type of deal. That now-famous postgame celebration in Miami must have made quite an impact on Johnson. 5. The Rex and John Show: General manager John Idzik has been saying that he and Ryan are joined at the hip, and this contract gives the impression they are a true partnership. The Jets like to do things in an unconventional way, and it was certainly unconventional to hire a GM with the mandate that he keep the coach for at least a year. It fueled rampant skepticism, people saying the marriage was doomed to fail, but Idzik and Ryan -- an odd couple in so many ways -- managed to click. By signing off on Ryan's extension (we're assuming Idzik was on board), it means Idzik is willing to tie his future to Ryan.
How do you know we would have a respectable offense? Are you looking thru your magical crystal ball? Cut the bull shit, Caldwell would be able to do shit with the offense we have had, If he had Peyton Manning then yeah. Rex is the best coach available at this time and getting him back to give us some stability is a plus not a negative.
FYI unless we makes the POs end of the 2014 season under this contract the NYJs can terminate RR with no penalty
True....things have calmed down recently. Even Geno's dick pic didn't create as much media fervor as I thought it would. Part is probably Rex's learning to be less polemic, and part due to Geno having a downright boring demeanor. The Sanchez situation will still create a stir no matter what happens. It's a good thing that Rex will be back...I'd hate the Jets to become like most of the teams in the NFL have become...pc and boring.
Never did I say anything was "falling apart behind the scenes". My contention all along was that the if the Jets wanted a 1 year extension they made a mistake publicizing his return prior to doing the deal by unnecessarily giving him leverage. I thought he would get a multi-year deal despite the Jets only wanting to give him a one year deal. You took issue with this post: And gave me a retarded lecture about how I wasn't privy to what the Jets were doing an I wanted everything done hastily. Well Rex didn't get a one year deal so what the fuck are you gloating about?
i love how manish posts some bullshit about the contract like yesterday so the jets release the news haha i have no idea if thats what happened or if it just worked out that way, but fuck mehta.
Coming from a moron like you ill take that as a compliment. The abysmal offense falls on Rex too. You cant sit there and say he takes no part in that. He has no clue about anything on offense and even has admitted something similar to that. He can be given credit for Wilkerson but Richardson was a stud right out of the draft. There is nothing Rex did with him to make him special. You need to go back and look up the definition of mediocrity and come back before you make yourself look like a fool. Rexs record with the Jets is that and is below 500 now the past 3 years with no playoff appearances. You dont extend someone like that. Period. Good news is, this isnt baseball though and none of these contracts are guaranteed so he could still be fired early if his teams dont improve.
