Jets have a place for Adalius Thomas

New York Jets aren't expected to sign recently-released linebacker Adalius Thomas, source says

Jets' interest 'minimal' in Pats' castoff Adalius

Someone reported in the Henderson thread that per ESPN, Jets no longer have an interest in AT, and instead, that they were looking at Henderson.

Much better move, if you ask me.

^ I can't believe Tannenbaum right now...they wouldn't tip their hand that they feel they still need a pass rusher.

If they are looking for a viable passrusher, is AT the solution?

less sacks in the last two years combined then Jason Taylor has last year would suggest otherwise....

I read New England message boards about Adalius after he was released, they all were speculating his efforts on the field ceased.
Now, I understand that is a red flag, but he had no problems (that I'm aware of) under Rex.

I think, if this is a boom or bust season, he certainly is a short term solution.

It looks like next year's draft will absolutely call for reinforcements in the front 7 and LB core, until then the Jets have to patchwork temporary players in.

Can someone please point me to the positives in bringing a guy like AT to the Jets. From what I've been able to gather over the last few days, based upon comments made on this very board:

    1) He's up there in age.
    2) He's injury prone.
    3) He doesn't add anything in terms of coverage.
    4) He's a poor pash rusher.
    5) He wouldn't represent an upgrade over Bryan Thomas
    6) He would expect significant playing time and wouldn't be fond of a backup role.

    What am I missing?

Rotational depth for freshness in the 4th quarter.

I'm saying the bolded things about Jason Taylor...

Although, KOZ, I will say if the interest in Adalius has decreased and it's on Rex's end, then I absolutely would be against it.

If the interest is coming from Rex then I am for it.

I'll argue against these two points for the same reason. Adalius Thomas is a system linebacker. He did his best work in Rex's system, moving around the field and attacking from different points. Rex knew how to use the guy. In Baltimore, Thomas would typically move around between three three positions depending on the situation (OLB, 3-4DE, 4-3DT) and the alignment that Rex called. It was difficult to key on him early because he would never be in the same place.

In that light, he is probably an upgrade of Bryan Thomas who can play as a decent overall OLB, a shitty 4-3 DE, and fuck all as a 4-3 DT. He doesn't have the same skill set that Adalius Thomas has/had and just isn't as good a fit for the system. So in that sense, he would be somewhat of an upgrade.

Belichick, for all of his genius, just couldn't get anything out of Thomas. It might have been due to a dropoff in his skills but it may have also had something to do with Belichick's more rigid structure in his defense as well as the age and turmoil that the Pats' D was going through just as Thomas was signed.

    That being said:
    1) I'll take Henderson over Thomas.
    2) We don't really need another +30 year old OLB.

What exactly does "minimal interest" mean? You either want the guy on the team, or you don't.

Probably means 'if you really want to play here, it will be for minimal salary'.

Great point. I didn't think about that. We lose a ton of negotiation points if we come right out and say we have a strong interest in him, so by appearing only slightly interested we make him want us more. I've forgotten that this is Tanny we're talking about.

That tweet sourced a Mike Florio article, which in turn sourced the same Star Ledger and Daily News article that you already posted earlier in this thread.

    Source FAIL.

This. If the Jets do bring in Adalius Thomas, it is not going to be for much money. He's already getting a hefty severance package from the Patriots due to his guaranteed money so the Jets wouldn't be willing to put too much money on him.

Or they could be satisfied with what they already have at OLB.
