The option cannot be exercised until Friday (March 17th), you are correct. If they do the trade and push it through, the Jets would need be $60m under the cap in order to take on everything and then on Friday they exercise the option which would change the hit to $15 or whatever the exact number is. Two other things that can happen are: 1) The trade is agreed upon, Rodgers says he wants to come to NY. The trade is done on Friday after the option is exercised or 2) They rework the entire contract so they can fit Rodgers under the cap now and it's done before Friday.
Rodgers will be announced at 12:01 and the Jets sign Beckham or Allen Lazard at the same time and break the internet.

You're right, I think it's probably option 1 to save the financial gymnastics but I don't get the feeling Rodgers is feeling any pressure to reveal his destination.

Rodgers is still option 1. If it doesn’t come through, then I’d prefer Jimmy G at $25M/year and keep our picks as opposed to trading 2 first rounders to Balt for the right to guarantee $250M to a QB who most likely will continue to miss games going forward. That’s a risk for Jimmy G as well for sure, but the price is WAY lower for Jimmy.
