Yes, absolutely silly you. Gholston, a 6th overall pick and about a $30 mils. Maybin, a FA, and about $750k. Wheres the comparison?
I wouldn't be so sure of that. Bellore looked one play away from a solid night last night. With Mauga getting shifted outside occasionally, like they did with Westerman before he occupied OLB full time, I could see Bellore taking a spot. Sure, he'd have to play ST, but I doubt it would be a Lance Laury situation in which the team felt he was an ILB in name only. 7 DL, 8 LB, 9 DB would give us 24 on defense, and we'll likely be carrying 25.
It's not a done deal. The Bears are interested in him too. They could end up with Gholston and Maybin. /bearswinsuperbowl
I'm talking about the Jets fans screaming that we got another Gholston.... A little bit of a difference when you're signing a free agent to a nothing contract then when you're spending a pick at the top of the first round. Just a little bit of a different situation.
Perhaps Maybin will feel most comfortable with the Colts. They've already got two defensive line busts (Jamaal Anderson and Herry Jughes).
I didn't see anything from Bellore last night that would have put him on the roster as an ILB alone, he's going to need some consistent ST play to earn a spot. That's not to say that he has no value as an ILB but his play there isn't what is going to get him on the roster. Of course that could also change. He might blow up and force his way into a higher rotation but for now, I've seen plenty of TC LBs have solid nights in the preseason without noticeably contributing on ST and then get sent packing. Again, I don't think he's useless as a linebacker, it's just not what is going to get him a job.
obviously. i would make fun of you guys. but realistically i would know he likely has no shot. btw: i have confidence in rex being able to develop a player. gholston didnt work, but doesnt mean everytime he will fail.
They are both zero-risk camp bodies. It's not like either one is being brought in to fill a spot on the starting rotation. Bring them in on a minimum contract with no guarantees and then see if they can do anything more than nothing? No? Oh well.
What? Really? Maybin was an 11th overall pick. Both are titanic busts. We could have had Gholston, a FA, for the same minimum/near-minimum price. We're comparing the players and their histories.. not the potential FA signing to the prior draft picks.
Fuck if I know what they see in him but there has to be something. Maybe it's that "Rex can teach the game" mantra. Maybe they don't plan on using him as a traditional OLB. Maybe they want to see what he can do in James Ihedigbo's old role just rushing in from the secondary. Or maybe they figure Vlad Ducasse needs a confidence booster. Any way, as I said before, this is a move that has as close to no risk as you can get when telling people to play football. He's only taking reps away from the other guys who likely won't make the team.
He is leaning towards the JETS... Cole hearing the same RT “@JasonColeYahoo: Latest word is that Maybin is leaning toward the 1-year offer from the Jets, decision not final.”
