Yeah, this was the truly illogical stance. I preferred Wilson over Fields but I understood the logic behind wanting Fields. Absolutely agree. I've seen one, maybe two questionable decisions from him. Very refreshing after Darnold who seemingly threw into double coverage every other pass.
Oh ok. It's the pads. Wilson wears bigger pads that make him the same size as Rodgers with smaller pads. Got it!
Wilson at his pro day was almost the same size as Darnold at the combine. 1 inch smaller and 6 lbs lighter. He may not look big but he is and he has room on his frame to add weight. But, the important thing with Wilson is at least in college when pressured he did not take many hits. His quick release and decisiveness has the potential to help him avoid a lot of unnecessary hits at the pro level.
Most know I was the loudest voice for trading down for a ton of picks this season (not keeping Sam). In that respect, we have a long ways to go before I'm convinced that was incorrect. I had Wilson ranked 3rd behind TL and Fields, in a tie with Jones. But technically I had Jones as a better pick because of Zach's injury history - and everyone remembers my 3 red flags that make Zach too risky to pick at #2. Honestly, I still believe it. Its going to take a lot of success to make turning our back on all that draft capital and just taking Fields/Jones, or waiting a year on QB, wasn't the best way to rebuild. Unlike many others here I think our rebuilding has been slapdash and squandered. Regarding the GB game. That was the same thing Zach was facing in college. Running an offense that was much more talented than the defense, with little pressure and constant open receivers. These are the kind of games that make preseason heroes that end up evaporating in a real game. Will it happen to Zach - who knows? I mean the kid has never even been hit since he's been in the league. Once he starts getting hit we are going to meet the real Zach. Even then he is going to have to be substantially better than Jones/Fields to make it worth it. That's on top of staying healthy because his history shows he is injury prone - perhaps made of glass. If he has a standard fluke injury that's one thing. But if one of his shoulders go again, well, that was something we knew was a risk going in. IMO too big of a risk for that pick. That said I do like his style. I like his reads, throws, release, and mostly, that he learns. It feels like the first time since Chad that we had a rookie QB whose actually learning defenses and how to make adjustments. IMO he is already further along than Sam is today. But the sample has been way too small and weak. None of us know for sure what we got right now and we wont until the rubber meets the road. However, the early signs are good and I'm hopeful of him having some level of success. Its just way to early to know how much success. When he plays well I'll give him credit. My big concern with his development is we didn't do enough on the o-line to prevent him from situations that could cause him to digress, or to protect his health. I am encouraged that he will learn and grow with the game. Whether he becomes Steve Young, Baker Mayfield, or an injured career backup, still remains to be seen. One thing is for sure. Winning converts everyone. I hope we win a lot more games this season than we are expecting. That will get the ball rolling in the right direction.
While Zach has looked terrific, it's too soon to conclude anything. For instance, in Daniel Jones's first preseason, he went 29 of 34 for 416 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, and a passer rating of 137.25. Now he's one bad season away from being a backup somewhere.
His true test will come when opposing DC's game plan to stop him. He does have qualities to his game that are encouraging for when the time comes.
Not for nothing but Daniel Jones also had a pretty damn good rookie season following that preseason I think he threw for over 3k yards and had a good TD to INT ratio for a rookie. I think a lot led to that demise
His 2019 stats, particularly the TD to INT ratio, were deceptive; advanced metrics like PFF (https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-best-quarterbacks-ahead-of-super-bowl-liv) and DYAR from Football Outsiders (https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/nfl/qb/2019) had him as a bottom 5-10 QB. And then in 2020, his traditional stats regressed to what the advanced metrics predicted.
and his first big hit from a NFL calibre DL guy running at full speed. He's not the biggest guy so with any luck, he'll learn how to minimize big hits with his body movement but at some point, he will get drilled. Most QB's that last have learned how to avoid the "big hit" and I'm hoping Zach does too PDQ. He's not gonna be facing "2's" forever..
I’m interested in seeing how he plays against ANY 1s. He’s the ONLY one of the rookie QBs to play ALL his snaps WITH starters against backups in the preseason. He’s looked GREAT but it’s hard for me to gauge what I’m looking at given the aforementioned fact. PS: This definitely a troll thread.
I'd prefer a tag next time since this is directed at primarily two posters. With that being said, it's awfully early to plant any flag. He's played two preseason games - let's hope he has a long career we can evaluate. I want to see him have two solid years with good progression into year two. Not look good in preseason against Innis Gaines and Henry Black. With that being said, preseason or not, it's nice to see the Jets offense look somewhat competent. There was a nice rhythm to play calling.
I wanna see him against the 1's too but its coming soon. its unrelated to the topic but this preseason has been so much better than the preseasons of years past. They are always pretty boring but it was worse when everyone did the same exact thing. I prefer this much more. Not being sure which teams will play which units on a given night, only 3 games instead of 4 so everyone who does play busts their asses.
If I’m a troll for expressing my opinions, then this means is definitely troll thread. I didn’t make the rules.
