He was partying with his TEAMMATE, who subsequently ended up driving drunk and killing somebody, AFTER he (Donte) had gone home. I'm still trying to figure out what the six degrees of seperation are between a guy killing somebody and a guy hanging out with his friend in a bar. Does that mean if you're at a bar and a guy who you never met, he leaves there and kills somebody, are you now implicated?

He doesn't like off season workouts. He looks like a fat slob doesn't he.

He argued with teammates and coaches. If I worked for the Browns, I'd probably take a gun to work after my first month on the job.

That went by the boards when a two year window to actually get to the Super Bowl opened up magically in front of us. BTW, there's little to no chance that we have a dynasty happening out of all of this. Too many of the Jets players are headed post prime in a year or three because of all the dealing and the depth is going to become a huge issue as people like Faneca, Woody and Ellis drop away, which they will fairly soon.

If you look at what Tannenbaum has done over the last two years the overall picture is that he has aggressively pried open an immediate window at the expense of the future.

Moves that clearly fit in the category are:

1. Acquiring Kris Jenkins and his back issues (which are ongoing) for two draft picks last season to backbone the defense.

2. Signing Alan Faneca, and not developing a left guard between Mangold and Ferguson, when Faneca's skills are clearly on the decline at this point.

3. Acquiring Lito Sheppard from the Eagles for what could be a 2nd round pick in what looks like the best draft since 2004 next year. Sheppard was a possible cut by the Eagles after his decline the last couple of seasons and Tannenbaum wanted him so badly he paid a premium to get him in town. On the bright side I believe that time lost to injury may cap the pick at a 3rd rounder, although that would make the price for Edwards a 2nd and a 5th due to conflicting obligations by the Jets.

4. Acquiring Brett Favre for a 3rd and a 7th in 2008 to make an immediate run.

5. Signing Damien Woody as an immediate answer at RT in 2008 instead of developing a RT for the long term.

6. Trading for Thomas Jones in 2007 despite him nearing the 30 year barrier that generally begins the decline phase of an NFL back's career leading to retirement shortly thereafter.

7. Acquiring Tony Richardson in 2008 to try to push the Jets run game over the top, despite the fact that he's guaranteed to be retired by 2011 at the latest.

8. Acquiring Shonn Greene for 3 draft picks this year to give the Jets the best possible chance to move the ball on the ground this year.

9. Acquiring Darrelle Revis for 2 draft picks to lower the uncertainty involved in developing 2 other players at positions that might not be of immediate need.

10. Acquiring David Harris for 2 draft picks to lower the uncertainty involved in developing 2 other players at positions of lesser need.

All 3 of the above deals were done to mix in 3 players as quickly as possible to the existing personnel at the cost of long-term depth and development of the roster. Note that 2 of the players are injury prone.

11. Acquiring Bart Scott, the lesser of the 2 Baltimore ILB's, to give the best chance to transfer the spirit of the Ravens defense to the Jets immediately.

12. Acquiring Jim Leonhard, the signal caller in the defensive backfield, to give the Jets the best chance to duplicate the coverage schemes required to support all the blitzing.

13. Acquiring Marques Douglas to give the Jets defensive linemen the best chance to pick up the Raven's scheme quickly.

All 3 of the above moves were done to make the transition from Mangini's 3-4 to the Raven's hybrid easier to pick up quickly. All 3 players are being paid a premium for the transfer of their knowledge and spirit, and with the exception of Leonhard they're all headed post prime shortly.

14. Acquiring Mark Sanchez at the cost of 4 potential roster spots to give the Jets the best chance to have a dynamic QB that can take them to the Super Bowl. I believe both Tannenbaum and Ryan when they say they did this with an eye towards this season as well as the future. They wanted to win right now before the vets started to decline.

15. Acquiring Braylon Edwards at the cost of 3 potential roster spots to mix in a deep threat on the offense when it showed signs of sputtering, due both to Sanchez inexperience and to the lack of threats available in the passing game.

Most of the moves above are not defendable if looked at alone. They're incremental improvements at the cost of future value and would have lead to an inevitable decline in the Jets roster over the next few seasons.

Looked at as a group though, they are a huge push for the right now, and every successive move strengthens the value in the previous ones. What Tannenbaum is trying to do is to push the Jets over the top right now and win the jackpot. The decline likely occur afterwards will be less stinging if the Jets win the Super Bowl now. It will give them time to then rebuild the roster around Sanchez on the offensive side and Leonhard (surprise, surprise) on the defensive side.

I would criticize individually every move above with the exception of Faneca, who I felt had to be signed to stabilize an awful Jets line with 2 young stars, Sanchez, who is a franchise QB prospect and as such worth almost any price to get, and Jenkins who fills the only non-negotiable position in a 3-4.

Each trade/signing though has made me re-evaluate the ones that occurred before it, because all of them as a whole have much more value than the individual transactions. If the Jets win a Super Bowl out of this either this year or next then the whole gamble was worth it. They're going to be rebuilding in 2011 or 2012 at the latest either way. In that situation there is no point in not making their best play for a Super Bowl right now while conditions are favorable.

Note that we have only 3 picks in the draft next year again as a result of all of this. We're trying the George Allen route to the Super Bowl. Hopefully we get lucky and win it instead of falling short as he did.

He is after all a cap specialist who preaches building for the long haul but it is obvious that all these moves have been influenced by the new stadium needing an elite team to sell sky boxes and PSLs.

QB - Mark Sanchez is our QB for the next decade and we will have two low price backups in Eric Ainge and Kevin O'Connell for a few years.

RB - Thomas Jones will be released this off season to save 5.9 mil but Shonn Greene and Leon Washington are both young enough to play for a few years.

FB - Tony Richardson will retire but FB is not a premium position.

WR - Edwards is 26, Cotchery is 27, and the rest are young and replaceable since most college receivers are great athletes like Smith and Clowney but not elite receivers.

TE - Dustin Keller. Blocking TE's are not rare or high cost.

OL - D'Brick and Mangold are both young. Faneca is in his 30's and will be overpriced but interior lineman can play at a high level until late in their careers, look at Kevin Mawae. Brandon Moore is in his late 20's but he is can be replaced when needed. Damien Woody is older but he might be our worst lineman and can be released at anytime without concern for salary. The depth on an O-Line is always in flux from year to year.

Our offense has a young core that will need to find a replacement for Tony Richardson and Damien Woody. Alan Faneca will most likely be overpaid but we look to be in very good shape for the next few years. Offensive line should garner the most attention in the next few years but we should only have to replace one starter per year.

DL - Shaun Ellis and Marques Douglas are older and will need to be replaced through the draft. DeVito is a young, quality backup. Kris Jenkins is quickly approaching 30 and has back problems but no one can dispute this was a great pickup. Rex Ryan excels with finding D-Lineman, he was after all a position coach there. I think adding depth to this unit will be the focus of our off season.

LB - This is a high priced unit with Calvin Pace, Bart Scott, and Bryan Thomas in their late 20's. Hopefully Vernon Ghoston will be able to make an impact and replace Bryan Thomas. David Harris is a young star. Jammal Westerman hopefully can continue to develop. My main concern is that we will not be able to release Scott and Pace if they start to slow down because of age.

DB - Darrell Revis, Dwight Lowery, Kerry Rhodes, Jim Leonard, Eric Smith. All are young and very good. Lito Sheppard and Donald Strickland may not be here long term but they are replaceable.

The Ravens have had an elite defense over the years because they are able to replace DL and LB every year and not miss a beat. If Kris Jenkins plays goes down hill he will be hard to replace. Calvin Pace, Bart Scott, and Lito Shepard were more short term moves that may negatively affect the Jets in the future but not severely since they are high paid but productive.

The criticism stems from the lack of draft picks the Jets have had over the last few years. They players they have drafted since Mr. T became GM have been exceptional because they targeted a player and traded up to get him. The Jets have not had any major misses in the draft of FA (other than maybe Gholston) in the last few years and had a bunch of steals. That is amazing! They haven't made 10 draft picks a year but could 10 draft picks made the team this year? Look at the Patriots last few drafts who have selected tons of players although they had a veteran team. Most are no longer playing for them (with the exception of this years class)

2006 - Jets 7, Patriots 2
2007 - Jets 2, Patriots 1
2008 - Jets 4, Patriots 4
2009 - Jets 3, Patriots 10
Total - Jets 16, Patriots 17

This does not include undrafted FA, which each team has had over that time or other young players picked up (like Kevin O'Connell). It also does not include Chansi Stucky or show that three of the players for the Patriots are on IR. The most important note, the Patriots have also had 38 draft picks compared to the Jets 23. This defeats the argument are in trouble because they keep trading away picks. The Jets may have traded away draft picks over the last 4 years but they traded them for good players. Yes once again the Patriots will have many more draft picks than the Jets next year but the Jets are successful because they choose quality over quantity.
