Congrats to the boyz. They deserved it. Now it's time to prove that we indeed have 7 pro bowlers. I'm shocked D'brick didn't make it. What's up with that?
And a damn fine six games they were!! Nah, I'm just sick of Jones making it to the Pro Bowl almost automatically every year. It's kind of like Faneca in that they're both above average players whose greatest assets are their experience, veteran saavy, and toughness. Mawae's another one like that. Still, Jones is more annoying because at least Mawae and Faneca were key performers on good O-lines this year. The Seahawks O-line was just meh. The NFC has some crappy experienced OT depth though...theres not even as many good, young talents at the position as there is in the AFC.
D'Brickashaw is still a pushover in the running game. Ever notice that we have zero success running to the left? Two reasons 1) At this point, Faneca is not a very good straight-ahead run blocker- he's much more effective pulling on running plays. 2) D'Brick gets dominated in the run game routinely, with the left side of the line being collapsed easily over and over. One of the reasons I was so mad about the 4th and 2 play call vs the Bills was not because we didn't kick the FG- it's because, for some reason, we tried going to the left in a short yardage situation. We've tried several times this season, and I don't think I can remember a single time we converted. Whereas we usually have great success running to the right.
Yeah I get it Mangold, Faneca deserve to be in it over Brick This Brick cant run block is tired and bullshit. Why not just call him a fucking bust still and get it fucking over with. I say it again and again but I guess the self described all knowing expert(s) just don't understand, What LT, ever, was paid more for their run blocking than pass blocking? Please somebody name one? Other then that bullshit phantom holding call, when have you heard anything negatively associated with Brick's pass blocking? ,<which for the so-called, self described experts is what LT's get paid to do> How about fucking never! But, hey lets revel in our impartiality and not let facts get in the way of a good ole Jets bust story. Brick has been superior this year in Pass blocking to every single LT picked ahead of him and it aint even fucking close. Yeah 7 Jets got in, a pity only like 3-4 actually deserve to be there. The Pro-Bowl sucks.
^ A few things 1) Nobody's calling Brick a bust. But we're saying he's not going to be a Pro Bowl level LT until he can get at least a decent push in the running game... Nobody said he needs to be perfect, but right now he's a pushover in the running game, and he needs to improve. 2) Nobody criticized Brick's pass-blocking, so why are you defending it so angrily? 3) No LTs were picked ahead of Brick, so obviously he's been better than every LT picked ahead of him
1) He is a complete pushover in the run game. One only needs to watch, and look at our complete lack of success running left to understand that... This is a 'nuh uh!' 'uh uh!' type of debate, but I really think someone who watches him play would have to be insane to think he is anything but a poor run blocker. 2) Every great LT can run block adequately. Yes, the reason they're so important is for pass blocking, and almost none are elite pass blockers and elite run blockers, but we're not talking about him being elite in the running game. We're talking about him being a decent run blocker. Getting some sort of push in the running game. Not letting the left side of the line collapse before the RB can make a cut. That sort of thing. He's not there. 3) My bad on this one. I thought you were referring to the draft
D'Brick HAS been getting decent push in the running game. This questions been getting asked alot lately here, but have you even watched him? He thrown some great blocks in the running game this year, and is arguably our best linemen when it comes to hitting the second level and blocking in space. Dude was a top 5 LT in the NFL this season, and most of the fans of his own team don't even know it. It's unbelievable. Whatever though...sports fans are usually at least one year behind in a player analysis. Most players who had a great season in the NFL don't even get acknowledged unless their team wins the Super Bowl, so it is what it is.
Great then we agree to disagree because I do not agree at all about point #1 and I do watch the line probably more then anything else during a game. He is not a pushover. He kicks out and gets to the second level quite a bit. If you want to complain maybe its the Jets blocking scheme. As for point # 2 My point was only Pace, and Ogden were truly elite in both ( and would be with Adrian Clarke next to them) for basically a career, you can add Boselli into the mix prior to him getting hurt. Walter Jones another preeminent LT is very similar to Brick. Look what happened to him when Hutch left.......... he is not nearly as good. You want me to agree, fine, I will look you in the eye and say Brick will never ever be a Pace or Ogden. However, he is more then becoming or became a Walter Jones (without the baggage)......... that is just fine by me. Edit: Me being annoyed was not so much directed at you ....... I was annoyed at a total idiotic opinion, I think you can figure that one out.......... this board has been insufferable lately.
I know you only watched the highlights of this last game, so maybe you missed it- but for the 14th time this season, we got no push on the left side of our line. The line ROUTINELY is collapsed because of a DE (or the occasional OLB) pushing Brick either into the backfield, or into Faneca. You can keep saying he's a top 5 LT in 2008- you made your mind up about that before this season even started- but that just doesn't make it true. However, as with all OL debates, we're going to have to agree to disagree, because the only way to judge is by watching the guy play. And that we can come to such radically different conclusions after doing so means either a) one of us isn't watching close enough b) one of us is misjudging him or c) one of us is delusional. I think it's very possible, based on one poster's weekly analysis of Brick earlier in the season, and a large portion of this board's complete agreement with it, that a lot of fans don't understand what comprises good run blocking. 'Getting to the next level' is not adequate if you failed to take the man at the first level out of the play. 'Driving' the guy you end up on down the field is not adequate if you only reached him after failing on your primary assignment. Engaging your assignment is not adequate if you failed to move him out of the running lane. Holding your block is not legitimate if it's a yard and a half in the backfield. No matter what a LT does, if he is driven into, and disrupts the LG off the snap, as the LG is trying to pull, he has messed up.. Further, if he retreats into the backfield because of an initial surge, and stops any other OL's progress on a pull or a reach block, he has messed up the play... And a LT's job is not over just because the run goes the other way. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a DE or OLB come down the line and make a play on the backside because of Brick. But anyway, I'll leave it at that, because I don't feel like going back and forth with 'nuh uh' and then 'uh huh!' over and over on this.
When the voting started Favre seemed like a reasonable candidate. Since then he hasn't been as deserving. But, getting that invitation will tell us a lot about next year. If he actually goes to Hawaii, that will probably be the end. If he bows out, like he usually does, that will tell me he's coming back for another year. So, it all work out. Rivers will get to go. And we'll have Favre back for another Jet season. At least I hope it goes that way.
i agree that if he goes, he won't come back next year. But if he doesn't go, i wouldn't say that means he's coming back
favre leads the league in interceptions, that is not a great stat for a guy going to the pro bowl. faneca has been very suspect this year. i really have not been impressed with him especially in pass protection. very nice to see jones, washington, jenkins, revis and mangold they were all pretty deserving. i got to listen to benigno today and i have to agree with him. 7 pro bowlers and we better make the damn playoffs. imagine how sorry you have to be to coach a team with 7 probowlers and not even make the playoffs. i think he may hate mangini more than he did herm.
Interesting that you should bring up what beningo was saying because I was listening to him today as well (I listen to wfan all the time on wfan.com) and heard him say that (and I totally agree, in fact, how could one not agree?) Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Joe B, but he's getting to be so negative lately that I'm having trouble listening to him after these Jet games. It's tough because I love the guy and he's probably my favorite Jets fan in the entire NY or even national media. I usually find his negative rants funny and soothing. But Lately, all of his pessimism and Jet negativity has just been getting me really down and making me feel like the Jets have already collapsed - even though they still control their own destiny. (And boy does he HATE Mangini) I don't know, maybe it's just me. He's still awesome, though.
The football community has spoken. The Jets are the most talented team in the NFL. Yet we are 9-5 with losses to the Chargers, Raiders, Broncos and Niners, and barely scraped by the Fins, Bills and Chiefs. You absolutely can not claim it is the players, as some of you have been claiming for weeks. Well you could, but it'd take supreme arrogance to believe the entire nation's fans and journalists and players are wrong and you are right. It is the coaching. We have 2 weeks to shape up. I have no faith in Mangini but I'm a Jets fan first and foremost so I hope he can pull it off, get us in the playoffs, and see what happens from there. If he manages to lose the Seahawks game though, he should be fired as soon as the season is over, even if we somehow get lucky and sneak into the playoffs. Because we'd be out within the week anyway.
