I agree with you, but... After everything I have witnessed from this franchise, nothing, and I mean nothing will surprise me on the idiotic side of things. Some things are just apparently to obviously retarded to stray away from with this franchise. It is almost like a dear staring into those bright headlights in the middle of the road. Something that obvious can't be a bad thing, right?
POST OF THE YEAR! Guys please stop it. No more 4-3 talk. Just stop now. Our buddy 43Chubby just broke it down for us, if you dont understand then you clearly just dont get it.
I agree with you, but not Tanny. Not this time, I trust Tanny and he knows what hes doing. No way he moves away from the 3-4, we just cant do it.
Are you kidding me? If this wasn't a "Yes sir! I will fire my best friend if you say so! Thank you sir!! Just don't fire me!" move I've never seen one. I also now think that Woody made the decision to sign Bret Favre. So think about this Jets fans--do you honestly think that a football guy like Bill Parcells wants anything to do with a dysfunctional team like the Jets? Woody is another Steinbrenner.
Its well known that Ellis played often played DT when the Jets went to a 4-3 in passing situations this year.
Why does every moron here think that if we got Spagnuolo we would go back to a 4-3? He wouldn't be the DC and I would hope only Mangini was stupid enough to insert a defense for which you didn't have a single capable player. We have spent 3 years getting players for the 3-4 and to change now would be insane...oh, and a losing formula as well.
One year Mich played 3-4 and Harris did well in it. Thats a big reason why the Jets drafted him. Woodley also did well the one year they went 3-4 and thats part of why PIT drafted him.
Regarding 3-4 vs 4-3, the Jets are 1-2 LBers away from having the right personnel for either scheme. This offseason the Jets need to get new LBers one way or the other. Whether we switch schemes or stay with the 3-4, we need to get 1-2 new starting LBers. Harris can play in either scheme. Barton wasn't that great in a CONTRACT YEAR and he's getting old. BT is useless. Gholston can't play LB. If we stick with the 3-4 we need a pass rushing threat at OLB and a coverage guy at ILB. If we go to the 4-3 we need at least one new LB, maybe two if Pace can't make the switch. Newsflash, Pace sucked for 4 years as DE in the NFL.
Players who become appreciably worse if we move to a 4-3: K.Coleman, C.Pace Players who will suck in either system: B.Thomas, V.Gholston Players who will not be adversely affected by a switch: S.Ellis, K.Jenkins, D.Harris, DBs Positions we need to address to make the 3-4 work, either depth or starters: NT, DE, OLB, ILB, CB, S Positions we need to address to bring a decent 4-3 together: DT, DE, OLB, CB, S. Seems to me it wouldn't be a disasterous upheaval.
Current front seven: DE: Shaun Ellis - Experience in 4-3, but getting on in age NT: Kris Jenkins - See above and add back/hip problems DE: Kenyon Coleman - Solid against the run, good 3-4/2-gapper, no NFL 4-3 experience WOLB: Bryan Thomas - Save for one year in 3-4 a constant under-achiever, terrible as a 4-3 DE WILB: Eric Barton - Decent weakside OLB in 4-3, solid against the run, terrible in coverage in a 3-4 SILB: David Harris - Great rookie season, bulked up for 2008, magnifying coverage problems SOLB: Calvin Pace - Terrible 4-3 DE, best all-around LB on this team, great at point of attack in the running game, decent coverage in the flat, weak pass rush characteristic of rest of LB corps There's going to be a lot of turnover on this team if we switch schemes. Not to mention the only players that fit the 4-3 are older than you'd like, with Jenkins being the youngest of the group. Here's how I'd project our 4-3 without bringing anyone else in: DE: Calvin Pace - did nothing in this position in Arizona, switch to 3-4 best thing to happen to his career DT: Kris Jenkins - he did it before and did it well DT: C.J. Mosely - played this position in Minnesota, wowed no one DE: Shaun Ellis - 5th defense with Jets, knows the position, probably likes this more than the 3-4 WLB: Eric Barton - Powerful run stopper from LB but a liability in coverage MLB: ????(Cody Spencer?) SLB: David Harris - Too slow to play MLB in 4-3, not going to be able to cover deep, listed at 243, looks like he's closer to 260, going to have to drop that weight before making the move.
I never liked the 3-4 till we got Jenkins then I thought hey maybe this works ok. Then Jenkins fell off the planet and we were back to no pass rush and no run defense. Our secondary is not strong enough with no pass rush. Everybody talks about how Favre ruined us. How many Qb's had career days on our defense. Some were even playing for the first time and threw for 300 yards. Look how Brady looked in Superbowl when the Giants knocked him around. Gotta get a pass rush
I have one request, GET A PASS RUSH I don't care if its 4-3, 3-4, 4-4, 5-5-2, 3-5 whatever, just get me a consistent pass rush that doesn't disappear for games at a time. It was embarrassing to see the All-Backup O-line of Seattle manhandle the 3-4 we had assembled. I'm not attached to the 3-4 because it frankly didn't get the job done in all three years here- there were moments where it would shine but it also was terrible in other stretches.
