Why do people here devalue right tackle? It’s just as important as left tackle. The Eagles, Chargers and Lions all have elite right tackles taken in the top ten and I don’t think they’re upset about it. The Saints had one for a number of years in Ramzcyk, and Wirfs just recently switched to being a left tackle after years of being an elite right tackle. Those are all perennial playoff teams..
I'd be happy to trade him for a good draft pick or two, regardless of whether we are drafting Jeanty, he was awful last year
I saw that too on Breece. I don’t see why the Jags would have to move up for Jeantty though as I doubt he gets selected before them. I think that’d be a bad mistake too. Jeantty’s good, but I don’t think he’ll be elite and the drop off to Omarion Hampton isn’t much IMO.
Very ok with trading Breece and rolling with Braelon Allen/Isaiah Davis with a rookie RB in the mix. Breece is due a new contract, we're not going to give it to him, and we're going to stink this year. Move him before his value drops. And don't draft Jeanty.
I don’t really want Graham, but I don’t think this makes much sense. Two good defensive tackles is a good thing for a defense regardless of whether they’re playing the 3T, nose or 4/5i and it’s been made a bigger deal here than it should be. On top of that, I’d guess Quinnen is cut, traded or asked to take a pay reduction after this season. You don’t generally keep a 3T much deeper at his price tag longer than after this year especially with the 2022 class due extensions. After the year it’s a post June-1 savings of almost $17 million with a manageable dead cap number that can be spread out.
Agreed, My point was that in College LT typically faces better competition than RT, because it is more advantageous to get to the blind side. So that is just a factor into the equation. But yes, both positions are very much important. For someone like Banks when he comes in and practices RT in training camp, he can start at RT, but if Olu is injured he could move to the LT relatively quickly since he played a lot of it in College. If Membou comes in at RT and Olu gets hurt, it might be harder for him to play LT since he only played RT in College. But again, I would be happy with either Membou or Banks.
No, in college. His senior year, Gholston beat Jake Long for three sacks in the Ohio State vs Michigan game. Then Jake Long was taken #1 overall in the draft. Gholston went on to start five games over three seasons in the pros. He had no sacks and was eventually moved to defensive tackle at the end of the third season.
I guess, but the NFL isn’t nearly as rigid as it used to be with that stuff. It’s a lot more about scheme and matchups. The really good defensive ends move around a lot and find the best matchup. Parsons, Crosby, Bosa, etc. line up all over the place. Parsons and Crosby will line up over guards and centers at times in obvious pass rush situations if they can try to isolate a 1 on 1 against a weaker guy. That’s why I think you need two good tackles and the whole notion that taking a right tackle in the top ten is wrong somehow over perceived positional value is silly.
The Dolphins selected Long over Matt Ryan… I think Long lasted roughly 4 years down there? Great drafting …
Forget the trends - experience has shown since the draft began that drafting is a luck assisted art, not a science. When the history is written the splitting of hairs in created statistical categories largely irrelevant to playing the game of football will be proven meaningless.
Besides the Jets have a huge hole at RT. There’s nothing wrong with drafting one at #7 as long as you find the right fit. I think Banks is probably a little safer than Membou based on the collegiate level of competition. I’m sure the Jets would also like a little flexibility along the OL in case of the injury bug like the one from 2023 when they had guys literally off the street starting … if they keep Olu at LT and Banks at RT if benefits them if Banks needs to slide to that side in case of injury or even vice versa. Same with the whole Tippman to guard notion. I doubt they plan on moving him there permanently but by signing Myers they have more flexibility inside too ….
I think this draft is so deep for OL that we could pick up a development/swing tackle in the later rounds for some depth, just in case Olu goes down again, tbh we haven't got a lot in reserve if injuries bite Trey Wedig experience at R/L/G, decent prospect but T-Rex arms but could be good for back up Hollin Pierce, again, a good prospect but on the slow side, limited agility Jordan Williams - RT/RG expodes off the snap but inconsistent and balance issues Dalton Cooper - LT RAS score of 9.06, 3800 snaps, experienced All projected round 6/7
Other teams do this, even ones that aren't bad/average. -The Detroit Lions took Penei Sewell, who won the Outland Trophy for best offensive lineman in the country at left tackle, they switched him to the right side where he's excelled. -Jonah Williams was an all-American left tackle at LSU. a 1st round pick of the Bengals he was their starting left tackle for 2 seasons until they signed Orlando Brown in free agency and switched Williams to the right side. Now hes the Cardinals right tackle -Tristan Wirfs went the other way. He was a great right tackle at Iowa and made 2 pro bowls with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before they switched him to the left side where he starts now. To play offensive line in the NFL you need to be versatile
It's the legacy way of thinking. And I get it because the left side is the QBs blindside. But around about 6-8 years ago defenses changed, they found that by rushing the QB from his right side, right in his face it leads to turnovers. (or in Zach Wilson's case - running backwards) Now if you want to be good you should have a good pass blocking right tackle, you can't just throw a big ham sandwich run blocker out there and hope for the best.
The point is they took him over a good QB that lasted about 15 years. That wasn’t good value over the long run…..
The irony is I’m a huge fan of drafting DT’s like Graham. What I’m not a fan of is giving them their big 2nd contract. Very few play up to the value of it. Since we already made the awful mistake of paying QW, we’re stuck with him. I don’t think cutting him this year is the solution. A 3 tech penetrates right at the snap. Their job is to stop the run on the way to the QB. The 1 tech lines next to him in a 4-3 and stays on the line clogging up lanes and eating up blockers. In tandem they are dominant. When you don’t have a quality 1 tech, the production of the 3 tech drops significantly, as was our case last year. Lining two 3 Tech’s means they’re both penetrating on the way to the QB. The OL can easily move both aside and clear a huge hole up the middle, and then move right up to the LB’s since the DT’s are in the backfield and out of the play. A good 1 tech keeps everything in check. It’s not a smart strategy running two 3 techs, and it’s certainly not smart to have that much invested into DT. . Your DT’s should compliment each other, not mirror each other.
These are three examples out of an entire league though, and the Bengals OL was shit so Jonah Williams isn't a great example. Sewell and Wirfs are the best examples but to me they are the exception not the rule. And my bigger picture point was we are doing this everywhere. Tippmann excels at Center, we think about moving him to guard. AVT excels on the left, we send him to the right and also have him play both tackles. I'm not saying we're fucked no matter what I'm just saying we seem to be the only team doing this across all 5 positions (except LG now) and it's probably not a coincidence that we stink. Edit: Because it worked perfectly in Detroit, I'm fully expecting the pick to be Membou or Banks. Seems like I'm holding on to something that isn't there but I'm hoping there's a voice saying "hey look what LaPorta did for us" too.
Live for this stuff, my final say: Mashon Graham is no way a Jet. Him and Quinnen are the same player, a 3T. Just not happenning. I think we are going OL, lot of noise on Membou, maybe for us to sneak in for Kelvin Banks? Do think it makes sense for a LT insurance policy to play RT. I would like Warren, personally. A trade back would be the most exciting.
