this is shere my mind started going... wirfs looking clearly superior thus far...and healthier too...smh
I think this is the exact reaction I have after yesterday. Not gonna freak out over 1 game, especially when they looked better in the 2nd half. The OL is definitely concerning though. It'll be interesting to see how Fant plays at LT for the next few weeks with Becton sidelined.
I think it's understandable to be a little worried especially until we see some actual results, but keep in mind this OL is predominantly middle-tier FA's. Becton has struggled but has looked more good than bad. AVT literally has 1 game under his belt. He did not look great yesterday but that could be said for probably 99% of rookies in their first game. Would I love to have Thuney and Conklin on this line, like JD wanted? Abso-freaking-lutely, but they didn't want to come here, they chose to play for contenders. Can't blame them but that's one of the disadvantages of being one of the worst teams in the NFL over the last decade. I understand everyone's frustration after yesterday's game but I'm not going to panic after Game 1. Yesterday was the first time the OL has actually played meaningful snaps together, we're running a brand new system with a rookie HC, OC, QB, and we were without 2 of our top 4/5 WR's. We lose yesterday's game by 3-4 TD's last year IMO. Progress.
The first half was a shit-show, but one big positive was how Wilson responded after taking one on the chin (I thought he'd be leaving with a concussion)..... little victories I guess
I don't have the exact number but was scrolling through Twitter and PFF had him ranked less than 30. I don't think PFF is the greatest, but they had him ranked pretty bad.
We’ll there was some good and a whole lot of bad….I haven’t gone back and rewatched, but after sleeping on it, my biggest issues are 1. OL play was really bad, especially first half….when you get 6 sacks, tons of pressure, and less than 3 yards average in the run game, the OL failed. I think it’s worthy of concern that they played better without Becton in there…I get the first game playing together and all that, new scheme and all that….all valid. Which is why I’m not throwing in the towel on the OL…I think they’ll figure it out, but regardless…they should have shown better than they did. You saw Zachgetting antsy in the first half…he settled down for the second half but man, they need to fix this OL before we’re looking at David Carr the second 2. say what you want, but at this point after a bad camp and a bad day, on top of injuries, Becton is a concern…not that he can’t turn it around, but it’s a concern 3. I thought LeFleur’s play calling was pretty terrible….too many ineffectual runs on first down…I get trying to establish the run, but at some point you gotta see that it’s just not there and replace the run with a few short easy passes just to keep the defense guessing a bit. Then feed off that and the run will come 4. as we all knew, Lawson’s loss was huge…for like the twentieth year in a row, we don’t have a pass rush. Again. We need to draft pass rushers and OL next year until we get those two things fixed 5. to end on a better note, the you g corners held up better than I expected… not perfect but not the horrendous shitshow that low round rookies could’ve been 6. love the halftime adjustments…that’s a great sign as we looked like a different team in the second half 7. if we can keep Wilson upright, I think he’s gonna be good
Rough outing for the entire group. Surprised to see AVT as the lowest ranked one, thought for sure that would go to Fant.
Wirfs was who I wanted assuming we were going OL, Lamb is who I wanted overall. I did not want Becton in the slightest. I was more than willing to eat shit because I figured JD knew more than me... and he does... but all things considered we have all the reason in the world to believe we made the wrong choice.
The bolded is where Joe Douglas was supposed to thrive. We heard all about his mentors in Baltimore and Philly and how he'd be plucking talent out of the 5th round that turn into starters... meanwhile we have tried a million different OL combos and none have worked. I understand this group needs to gel and I'm willing to wait that out but Jesus, day 1 should NOT look this bad when the OL whisperer has been making picks/signing players for two years.
Yeah, those TEs struggled to block anyone for the entire game. They brought it extra TE for more protection but these guys can't block anyone. It looks like our OL coach is from San Fran and has brought in a new "wide zone" scheme. Part of it could be they're adjusting to a new scheme but that doesn't explain their total inability to block one on one.
An encouraging breakdown of AVT's performance on Sunday. https://sny.tv/articles/deep-dive-on-alijah-vera-tucker-s-week-1-performance
