Of course they can improve the roster. Why would anyone think otherwise? They have the second most money available and the GM by releasing the vets. that some were moaning about has set them up for good off-season shopping.
There is no free agent that fixes the roster more than Kirk Cousins. There isn't even a debate. He's currently top 7 in completion percentage, yards (2nd), tds, QB rating, etc... He's proven himself three years in a row. Turns 30 in August and is about to get paid a ton of money. Hopefully it is the Jets. At first I was against releasing Wilkerson, but he only has 6.5 sacks in the last 26 games, including just 2 this year. The only issue is that the Jets would then need to spend money to replace a hole they've just created. Use his cap space to go towards Cousins and no one gets upset.
For his production and salary, they can definitely sign a decent free agent for way less than $19mil... Unless he took a substantial pay cut, this might be the way to go
I think your on to something but I would rather go OL in free agency. Those guys have plenty of tape to analyze and much quicker way to build up the OL. Plus you can have them around for a few year at least. Use the draft to get some corners and OLB. But those will be the hardest to fill and develop. I don't think Macc will ever draft a QB. He will go down swinging trying to make Hackenberg the guy.
Cutting Wilk frees up 11M cap, and leaves 9M dead money. It's nice cap savings, but also a lot of dead money and a position hole. Think I'm leaning towards keeping him another year to see if health and impact improve. Signing Cousins, and re-signing our own would be my top priorities with all the cap space.
I'm thinking a Mo restructure if it's possible and if it could help. I don't think they're gonna let him go, I'd be surprised. Mac has said that you fill needs with FA's and draft talent. Sign Cousins and continue drafting the type guys they have been. They're close.... a few more good players could really close the gap I think they need to sign a RB and make damn sure that they believe Shell can keep improving, or get a RT. I watched the Panther game again and the protection broke down, collapsed, on the right side on the McCown fumble. Shell and McGuire both. It reminded me of 2011 when Hunter and John Connors were fucking lost. They gotta fix that, and a vet RB could really help as McGuire adjusts...if he can
This article was in SI.com: https://www.si.com/nfl/2017/11/29/kirk-cousins-washington-redskins-quarterback Certainly gives a lot of support for those wanting to sign Cousins.
Been following the Redskins some this season, and Kirk Cousins for the most part has been on point. He's basically playing on a Giants-like team but keeping his team in games.
I just think he had an opportunity this year and blew it. Now his tank job has blowned up in his face. So he has an excuse not to with him bringing McCown back. By the end of 2018 he'll be fired for not addressing that gaping hole in the Jets. It was obvious Hackenberg and Petty stunk as they both can't see the field when McCown has turned out to be McCown.
Adding Cousins and Enunwa to this offense next season immediately improves it by a quantum leap. I would use our first two draft picks on the best offensive linemen available. Then I would make an effort to find a serious return threat because our ST units have contributed absolutely nothing positive to this team for years ... but they have managed to give away dozens of points ... and that's a BIG problem.
Imagine Cousins starting in place of McCown in this year. We could win some of our close games and we could be in the race for a PO position. That's the exact difference what a normal QB can make.
I was watching TNF yesterday and he played his ass off. Due to the talent, or really, lack thereof (poor o-line and WR's who are inconsistent at best, he got killed. After another poor season without the playoffs, I have to think Kirk may be looking to move out of D.C. and play for another team. Can the Jets sell their team to him as an ascending team that can afford him, provide him with more consistent WR's, and a better o -line?
Washington's o-line is better than it showed yesterday but due to the injuries it couldn't hold up. But that can change if Macc can go ahead and actually invest draft capital/cap space into it. For the Jets sake, I hope he does believe Macc
But if they designate him a post-June 1st cut, it's 17 million in savings and 3 million in dead money https://overthecap.com/player/muhammad-wilkerson/1013/ Ideally, I would prefer to keep Wilk too as he's shown flashes this year and seems to have been impacted by a slew of injuries, but that's just a ton of money for 2 years of sub par play. I wonder if he could come back on some sort of re-worked deal. Do agree about resigning a lot of in-house guys and being more particular in free agency
I watched a few minutes of the game, and the announcers were talking about Cousins and the teams who possibly will be suitors for him. They said they thought that Jacksonville would be his best choice due to Tom Coughlin being there, the Jags having a very good D that's pretty much set, and some good pieces on offense. That's where I hope he signs.
I know you're hell bent on him not coming to the Jets and get the idea that you should draft your own FQB, but the Jets have had minimal luck in that department so I'm less concerned about how we get the FQB, I rather just get one. They don't have more cap room than the jets but they can cut a few people and create some. They're, in my opinion, a better option for him. He would be playing in a division that's underwhelming on a yearly basis. But, the emergence of Watson, if Luck is healthy, and Mariota could be something that makes him wonder if he'll be able to reach the playoffs yearly.
