If Rex Ryan gets a Head Coaching job, expect Harris and other defenders to flock to his new team. Although, once they meet Dan Quinn, they might want to stick around.
Should stay: Tanner Purdum -he is cheap and we do need a long snapper Damon Harrison* - would let him go for a first rounder, otherwise he stays for at least another year Jaiquawn Jarrett Leger Douzable* Kenrick Ellis Only if they are cap friendly deals: Dawan Landry David Harris* Should Go: Bilal Powell Phillip Adams Ben Ijalana Willie Colon Jermaine Cunningham Mike Vick John Conner Greg Salas Nick Bellore
Should retain: - RB Bilal Powell - would prefer to see Powell retained, CJ released, and a rookie drafted in the earlier/mid rounds; Powell was probably a better runner than CJ in 14' - FB John Connor - seems better than Bohanon; depends if the new coaching staff values FBs and, if so, what type - WR Greg Salas - cheaply as depth to compete for a roster spot - OT Ben Ijalana - he's stuck around for this long, might as well see if he can win a roster spot in camp - NT Damon Harrison - deserves a first round tender; Jets should consider if a team like Cleveland offers a 1st for him - DL Leger Douzable - very solid rotational player should be retained cheaply for a couple years yet again - ILB David Harris - if the team keeps the 3-4, he's still a decent player and should be kept for 2-3 years while a potential heir is drafted and groomed (perhaps like a Demario Davis/Bart Scott situation) - S Dawan Landry - wasn't a playmaker, but was actually a very good coverage safety (PFF's #2 overall free agent safety) and should be retained for at least depth and package duties; Calvin Pryor shouldn't be handed a starting job; could be had for a bargain - S Jaiquawn Jarrett - even aside from his monster game against Pittsburgh, was generally solid this season and good in coverage too; could be the starter at FS - LS Tannder Purdum - why not? Should not retain: - OG Willie Colon - no chance; need a very high quality OG such as Orlando Franklin - CB Kyle Wilson - nope; even seemed to regress this year and wasn't even trusted to start at CB during this past year's CB debacle... - LB Jermaine Cunningham - always hurt, now has sketchy legal issues - QB Mike Vick - there was maybe about one week when this seemed like a possibility, but not anymore Either way: - NT Kenrick Ellis - at a bargain price ( about 1.5M/yr or less) sure, but might get a shot for more playing time elsewhere - CB Phillip Adams - could be worth having around to compete for a roster spot; if Dan Quinn is the coach, Adams will have those Seattle ties as a benefit - LB Nick Bellore - would rather see a guy who could actually play some defensive snaps too in addition to special teams
Wouldn't mind keeping Adams at least until TC. Harris can go unless he takes a team friendly contract. Snacks should get resigned.
I'm pretty sure that Quinn or whomever is the new HC will go thru the roster and get rid of the underperformers and dead weight. I don't see guys like Wilson, Vick, Colon or Conner hanging round under the new regime. I'm assuming of course that this new HC/GM combo has a better eye for talent than our previous leadership. Maybe the draft will fill the vacancies for a change.
Some of these guys might be brought back to compete in training camp. Salas, Conner, Jarrett, Adams, Cunningham, Ijalana etc. But if nothing else Wilson will be a goner. We need to keep Harris (hopefully he plays his whole career here), Harrison, Douzable, and Landry on defense. Powell, and Salas on offense.
We bribed Bart Scott and Jim Leonard with a truckload of cash didn't we? If Rex wants to take Calvin Pace and David Harris and even Kyle Wilson with him? Cya boyz. We'll just get younger, faster and better. Maybe we'll even stop blitzing on 3rd and long.
Rex camped out at Bart's house at midnight so he could be the first to sign him. He was alright but I never thought he was a disciplined player. Harris's agent has gone on record saying he was in continuous communication with Idzik over the season for a new contract. And Harris had a good year. This was the plan for spending that $20 mil.
Great thread I was wondering yesterday why there wasn't one about potential FA's yet. Snacks has to be first priority. I'm interested to see what pick we tender him with, I hope as high as possible and we should match anything not completely crazy. There will no doubt be a Rexodus, if/when he goes to ATL. Harris is a loyal Jet but there's a good chance we lose him, we still have Davis but will need another ILB. Douzable and Ellis are the two most likely heading to Atlanta, both could more than likely start or get more playing time there. I'd love to bring Douzable back. Jarrett's worth an offer, once again could follow Rex but replaceable. Landry and Colon should take minimum or gtfo. Powell is replaceable but we could bring him back cheap. Our own FA's save Snacks and Harris truly don't matter. What matters is how our new front office can get the most out of our give or take 40 million in cap space. It looks like Maccagnan will be our new GM and he'll probably bring in Mark Dominik. The future of our team is in their hands and as bad as Idzik made us last season we're in a bright spot with the 6th pick and 40 mill waiting to be spent if needed to be. Should be an interesting offseason I expect lots of new faces next season.
I think it's too early too say because a lot of it depends on the coach we hire. For instance, if we hire Dan Quinn we should let David Harris walk and sign KJ Wright. If we hire Todd Bowles or another 3-4 defensive mind bringing back Harris is probably a good idea.
I think it depends where he ends up. If he ends up with Atlanta job...yes but if he gets Buffalo job then no. There already stack in Buffalo on D side.
Bring Back Damon Harrison - No Matter What * David Harris - Depending on system/big pay cut Bilal Powell - Solid Back Legar Douzable - Good D-Line Depth Kendrick Ellis - Good D-Line Depth Greg Salas - Let him compete in camp Tanner Purdum - Whatever Jaiqwaun Jarrett - Cheap RFA Let Go Kyle Wilson - Huge Disappointment * Mike Vick - Other Options Available Willie Colon - Yellow Flag * Dawan Landry - Better Options Available Nick Bellore- Cheaper, younger special team guys available Ben Ijalana - Hasn't done anything Phillip Adams - Maybe let him compete in camp * Musts
Anyone saying Bilal Powell should go needs to get their head examined. You won't find a more team player with talent who can do everything asked at his position.
I agree! He does whatever we ask and has a lot of miles left in the tank. With CJ likely gone there is no reason to let Powell go. Who knows he could become our younger version of Justin Forsett given the opportunity.
he sure can, he's got a deceptive amount of talent going for him(his ability to find space and extra yardage is really unheralded), and not a lot of mileage. CJ's barely more talented, the home runs just don't come often enough to justify his cap hit. we can cut CJ and keep powell at half the cost without killing our run game, and i think thats what we wind up doing. some might say that we should just draft a replacement, but why not keep a man thats proven himself at the pro level? not every mid round RB is worth a damn and besides powell won't be expensive. he should only be worth just over a million or two a year, and I'm sure a bit of job security would be much appreciated from his camp. I'd sign him to a 3 year deal worth 6 million and lock up a slightly underrated complimentary back. edit: and extend ivory's deal while we're at it, he's a top 20 rb who WILL be our lead back next season, pay him like one.I'd give him a little two year extsenion worth 7-8 million with a 3 million dollar signing bonus and this years salary guaranteed. i've checked, if thats all he gets guaranteed we can cut him for cap savings the next year if we wanted to, so why not lock him up as well?
