FIFA rankings are largely horseshit as they are arbitrary and subjective judgements that are based on performances against other teams whose ranking is just as arbitrary and subjective. There is absolutely no sensible way of ranking the USA versus non-CONCACAF teams when the only way of doing it is relative performances against other teams in entirely different competitions. If you want evidence of the ineptitude of these rankings, you only have to look at where England have been ranked over the last ten years. Virtually the entire time we have been in the top ten, and yet there is no sensible argument by any criteria you wish to choose that England have been one of the ten best sides in the world.
