i know it's comparing apples and oranges, but just some food for thought. Jesus Montero is 6'4", Joe Mauer is 6'5"
Yes but Mauer was an All American catcher in college and had plenty of experience so there was no doubt where he would play. Does Montero have any previous experience or is he there because its the fastest track to the majors?
Montero has been a catcher throughout his short career, but there are a couple of additional points of note in that Mauer comparison: 1. Mauer is 26 years old and has already had several issues with his knees and back. His knee problems started all the way back in 2004, when he was 21. 2. Mauer has just bulked up to 225 in the past couple of years as he started to fill out; he used to be listed anywhere from 5-15 lbs. lighter. Montero is already 225 at age 20. 3. Mauer, despite his size, showed he has the agility/skills to be a good defender behind the plate. By all accounts, Montero does not.
Isn't it pretty awesome to be a Yankee fan? I mean, our biggest "problems" right now are who our fifth starter is going to be (and the "loser" just gets a temporary bump from the rotation while Pettitte finishes his career,) and what to do with our top hitting prospect because there's seemingly no room for him on the MLB roster.
It's actually pretty exciting to be a Mets fan too-- seeing FMart beast in the Carribean Winter Leagues, Ike Davis' production and Mejia's sick development would make me want to expedite the eventual flameouts of the pussies they have at the ML level right now. But speaking as a Yankee fan, please let Ollie and Big Game Pelf stick around for as long as possible.
See the difference though? The Mets are looking at hopefuls to rebound their organization. The Yankees are looking at hopefuls and saying "Do we have any room for these guys?" That's not a knock on the Mets either. I'd venture to say at least 20 teams (and more than likely more) are looking at the same sort of situation. How many teams are still worrying about a third starter, never mind a fifth?
Wtf is going on down in Florida? Are the Yanks working on things outside of their pitchers' confort zones? Everytime I look at the scores its 10-1, 12-2, the other team...???
Haha, this is my first thought every day. WTF is going on down there? Then I remember that the Yankees seemingly do this every year where they have a so-so Spring and things are fine. I don't watch the games, but I'd guess that our regulars play very little, and the pitchers we know are working on things. (I think I read the other day that both Burnett and Hughes had thrown a lot of changeups to work on them.)
Ian Kennedy is probably going to be the #3 starter in Arizona this season. Everyone should think about that one for a second, then think twice before they complain about Hughes, Javy or Joba.
Well, in fairness, I don't know anyone complaining about Joba or Hughes. Sure, there's the argument about putting one of them in the pen, but beyond that, I don't think anyone is "complaining" about them. Vazquez is a victim of the stupid "what happened the last time he was here" garbage. The complaints about him are just invalid.
