This could be a smoke screen but it certainly sounds like somebody trying to prepare the fan base for a letdown.

""We all have limits," Red Sox owner John Henry said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "Eight years is a very long time in baseball and everywhere else."

He also said the amount the team is willing to spend on a free agent "depends on both" the economy and the player being sought.

"Baseball as a whole has not yet been hit by the financial crisis, but it will," Henry said. "The degree is in question and won't be answered for a while."

Sounds to me like someone who has made their one and only offer and doesn't think it will be enough.

Teixeira is good, but not A-Rod good. They gave A-Rod his contract because when it's all in the books he will go down as the best player to play the game. Teixeira is good, but cannot command that same kind of market value.

So moral of this story, 10 years for him is absurd. Boston probably sees this is where the offers are going.

According to two different GMs now, the Sox have the highest offer on the table.

The deal is made when it is agreed upon in most cases. Obviously, from a legal point it isn't but it sounds like all he wanted was an agreements list to take to the Dodgers. Even Boras doesn't stoop that low. Oh, and I certainly believe the Braves GM over this guy.

Where do they say that? I assume those comments to mean if he wants to play on the east coast and for a winner he would go to the Sox. I don't see where anybody says it's the highest offer. At least not in anything that you have posted yet.

This is exactly why I am pro-contraction and anti-salary cap. The "small market" teams in all sports will always continue to conduct business the same way. They'll never spend the money to win. If the players don't come up through the system they just won't compete. Screw that.

I'm sure I'm not done yet!

Are you fucking kidding me? Do you even bother to READ things before you comment on them? You did it last night, and again right now. Where do they say that? How about right where I quoted them in my post? You know, where they used the exact words "They have the highest offer on the table"? Seriously, try reading things before you open your mouth. You might look slightly less stupid at times.

Boston also has enormously high hopes for their top prospect, Lars Anderson, who they see as a Teixiera-like player coming up. That doesn't do much for this and the next few years, but there are worse things than Lowell and Youkilis at the corners, and I think this front office and ownership has had enough dealings with Boras recently to be wary of bidding against themselves.

On the Boras topic, I also wouldn't dismiss the fact that John Henry et al. must still be ripping mad that it was Boras' counsel that encouraged Manny to shoot his way out of town and steal contract value from them. On the other hand, they may see that as getting them to even, when they made Boras fist himself on the back end of the Daisuke deal.

You're vastly overstating Anderson. His comparison is Justin Morneau not Mark Teixeira. Plus he's still just 21 and a few years away from being a full time player in the majors. I guarantee Lars Anderson has zero impact on the decision to sign Teixeira or not. By the time Anderson is ready, Ortiz is likely to be gone, and Anderson projects defensively as a DH anyway.

This isn't to say I don't like Lars Anderson as a prospect, because I do, and I think he's going to be very good. But you don't shy away from signing a proven player the caliber of Mark Teixeira because you might have someone coming up in a few years who could approach what Teixeira has shown for several years that he can offer.

Haha..you're right. I missed the first line again for the second day in a row. I read this.

"One of the GMs responded to Red Sox owner John Henry's comment to the Boston Herald that the Sox would not go 10 years on any player with, "No one's going there [10 years]."
    Quote:
At 10 a.m. yesterday, one GM involved in the talks indicated that if the talks had ended right then, the Red Sox would land Teixeira. At 6 p.m., that same GM said, "I still think it's the Red Sox."

And since you said two GMs stated they had the highest offer I assumed those were the two quotes. So one did, where is the second?

Alio is right, these guys don't know a f*cking thing.

On the Orioles out of the Teix race:
Despite an ESPN.com report to the contrary, Orioles president Andy MacPhail said Wednesday that the team may increase its initial offer to Mark Teixeira.

"We have indicated before that we have flexibility," MacPhail said. "I don't think anyone expects [agent Scott Boras] to lean over and accept the first proposal. Until we are told he is signing somewhere else, I don't think you can take yourself out of it." Baltimore's initial offer is said to be worth at least $140 million over seven seasons, which may actually put them no better than fourth in the running for Teixeira.

On the Yankees and Manny Ramirez
According to New York Newsday, the Yankees "have yet to make an offer to either" Manny Ramirez or Mark Teixeira.

The newspaper quotes "one person familiar with the Yankees' thinking" as saying that they "have not even discussed Ramirez at any length," which of course completely contradicts Wednesday's report in the New York Daily News quoting "one baseball official" as saying that the Yankees are "going hard" after him.

So Devil, if you're banking on the spew from the Boston homers, I wouldn't hold your breath.

    CC Sabathia "I'm All In".

Ten minutes after New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman left the home of CC Sabathia last week, Sabathia phoned Cashman.

    "I'm all in," he said.

With those words, Sabathia committed to a seven-year, $161 million deal with the Yankees.

"I think this is the best place for me to try to win a championship," Sabathia said Thursday, on his way to the press conference where he was formally introduced. "Everybody had speculated about me staying in California. I had always talked about winning a championship, and you look at the Yankees, it's something they contend for" just about every year.

Sabathia was phoned twice during his negotiations by Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter -- recruiting calls -- and Jeter told him about how much fun it was playing in New York. The day after he reached his agreement with the Yankees, he called Jeter, and the friends talked again about what it would be like to play together.

Two days before Sabathia made his decision, Reggie Jackson had been in Las Vegas, at the winter meetings, as part of the Yankee delegation that met with the left-hander. Sabathia, who grew up in the Bay Area, found himself distracted the presence of the Hall of Famer. "I was just thinking, 'Would it be weird to ask [Jackson] for an autograph?'"

It wasn't until subsequent meetings that Sabathia got to dig in and, without Jackson around, ask questions about the Yankees and New York.

Sabathia said that he and his wife, Amber, are in the process of finding a house.
