With all due respect, Douglas has not been here for 2 years. The 2019 free agency period and 2019 draft was run by MacCagnan, and not well. MacCagnan signed Bell, Mosely, Bellamy and others that offseason who haven't produced squat for the jets. Josh Bellamy was not the most expensive, but was probably MacCagnan's dumbest signing--$5M for a 30- year old special teams player??? MacCagnan's 2019 draft was terrible. Taking a 3-4 lineman with the number three pick overall was insane when he could have traded down for a fortune. Douglas has had only the summer of 2019 and then the 2020 season. I am not saying Douglas is perfect--he shelled out about $7M for a retread center in 2019, he should have addressed wide receiver better in 2020 draft, and I questioned the Gore signing from day 1. But between MacCagnan and Douglas, the lack of talent on our roster is largely because of the former, IMO.
The Jets weren’t going to play any meaningful games this season so they stripped the team down, guaranteed a high draft pick, and will start rebuilding this offseason. The schedule was murderers row and the talent devoid Jets were going to be the victims no matter what. Once you accept that, things start to make a bit more sense. Sam Darnolds career in New York is likely over. The chance of landing Trevor Lawrence trumps pretty much all for the rest of this season. I know some have an emotional attachment to Sam, and I know others are programmed to believe that we would “ruin” Lawrence if we draft him. I understand both of those things having been a Jets fan for a long time. With Darnold what’s done is done. Douglas made an effort to rebuild the OL. Some have worked out, some haven’t. That happens everywhere. He didn’t blow his wad in free agency because he knew this wasn’t a playoff team. It would have been a complete waste. Now, Douglas has a lot of picks in high rounds, a war chest for an offseason that will see a lot of talent shake loose, he’ll likely have a coach of his choosing, and he’ll possibly have the opportunity to build around a QB who many believe to be a can’t miss talent. It’s a completely fresh start with everything you could possibly want as a GM/Head Coach.
Just because he wasnt there for free agency doesnt mean he couldnt make trades and moves...The thing is we dont even know who Joe Douglas really is...it seems like every move hes making is because of Gase or his influence.Every time a player says something about Gase publicly they get cut or traded.
As a coach or GM, I would not tolerate any of my players publicly criticizing me/the coach either. Unlike divas Adams and Bell, most players don't call out their coach in the media. Not saying Gase is a good coach, he is not. But the player running to social media is not the answer IMO. As Parcells said when he took over the Pats: "These players will do things my way... And if any player won't do things my way, then he won't be here very long."
Honestly, I don't have a problem with players publicly criticizing Gase, he's that awful. And Parcells wouldn't let Gase shine his shoes.
In all fairness, Sam gets almost no reps throwing to open receivers becuase they're almost never open.
I'm for drafting Lawrence. But if we trade out of 1, I agree that Jacksonville is a good target. However, I think Lawrence is worth more than this. I could see both 1s, & a 2 (as you said) in 2021. It should also cost a 3 or 4 in 2021 AND a 1 & 3/4 in 2022. Maybe even more.
The best thing Joe Douglas can do is to keep an open mind and hold his cards close. Do not shop Sam or the # 1 pick. Instead, wait for other teams to make offers. Look for players that want out from other teams. Asking for a talented malcontent as a throw in when we do make a trade is always a good idea. Use the rest of the season to evaluate Sam and the rest of the roster. There will be a huge gap between what we can get for the # 1 pick and what we can get for Sam. As good as Trevor Lawrence is we owe it to ourselves to get the best deal we can.
If we have the #2 pick....I think we can turn that into 3 #1's and a #2. And this year's pick should be no lower than 5 and maybe 3 (take Sewell). Dallas may be a potential trade partner if we screw up the #1 pick.
“Look for players that want out from other teams.” Well, if they want out from other teams... why the fuck would they want in on this total debacle? If those types of players come here, they’ll want out from here pretty damn quickly, too We’ve already seen that with LeVeon and Mosely So no thanks on trading for a bunch of malcontents The rest of your post was top notch though
