I remember 1986 very well too. I lost a lot of bets towards the end of that year. Don't know why everyone picks on Joe Walton or O'Brien, those guys did some amazing stuff for our team and we almost made it. It was a magical season. The same thing or worse could happen this year. I think we need to win the games we should win (i.e. cleveland, detroit, etc...) and then we must win the games in our division. That will be the key for us getting into the playoffs. If we go for a record better than 10-1 or even to get to 10-1 we'll need luck and to stay healthy on our side. Preferably refs who also pull their heads out of their asses.
It sucked but it would have been worse making the DB and getting beaten by the Giants. The Giants were clearly the best team that year.
OYVE *facepalm* I forgot all about that....did you see Rex's 10/15 press conference? (RE: Rex is a Giants fan...) This thread is going places.....places that go bump in the night....hmy:
When Walton replaced Walt Michaels, Jet fans and beat writers were thrilled. Walton became the 1st in a long line of very good/great coordinators who were TERRIBLE as head coaches. The Jets beat a Dan Fouts-led SD team in SD on Opening Day 1983 and still finished 7-9 that year coming off the AFC Championship. I miss and loved old Leon Hess, but getting rid of Walt Michaels just because of the Al Davis thing was idiotic. Jets lost 15 years because of that move.
MaGuire picked against the Jets from Week 6 on. Charlie whatshisname gave his infamous "The Jets are going to win this playoff game" on the radio when the Jets scored with 4 minutes left. I knew then we were in trouble.
Charlie Steiner. He does the Dodger games now and was the New Jersey Generals guy back in the day. I just need him to do some Knicks and Devils games and he'll have all my teams.
They used to have a Thursday Nigth game or 2 early in the season, around the 2nd-3rd week. I am positive that Jets-Pats game was a Thursday Night game on ABC.
He was a former Bills player but Maguire was the biggest Jets hater of all time. If you think Francessa has it against the Jets you have no idea how bad this guy trashed our team as an announcer. The only football analyst that has been close to this annoying since Maguire is Keith olberman but that is only because he got into announcing politics.
Yeah, they got away from it for a long time and then brought it back to what we have now. Our first home game at Giants Stadium was a Thursday night vs Pittsburgh.
No kiddin. My brother and I would watch the games on tv and instead of chanting "Joe must go!" we would say "Joe must blow!" instead. I offered to buy him a box of Kleenex, but my dad wouldn't mail it in to the stadium for me.
I hate him to this day because of that. Seeing him reduced to "3rd man in the booth on the C/D announcing team" coverage on college football made my year a few years back. He's an annoying hack and always has been. Even if he didn't make the famous Jets prediction, I'd still be looking for the mute button during every one of his telecasts.
He turned out to be right. I think Michael Harper returned the opening kickoff for a TD but of course we lost. I hated Paul McGuire at the time but I actually like him in the booth.
Good gets on Charlie Steiner and yes, there was a Thursday nite game. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986_New_York_Jets_season
