Trust me, I agree with you for the most part. The first round is full of land mines when it comes to non defensive, non OL, players. The fact is, IMHO, we dont need a first round talent next year on the OL or defense. We hopefully have our QB and should be set at RB and TE. We need depth only at the positions I'd go after in the first round, and I'm not drafting for depth in the first round. So unless we plan on trading out of the first round next year (which I would have no problem with), I'd rather spend it now on a proven playmaker at a postion that is a first round talent. If Marshall can keep his nose clean for 2 years, he'll be an unbelievable weapon for Sanchez in 2010. The Giants could not have done it without Plaxico.
Larry Fitzgerald is a great receiver. There's no way he gets within spitting distance of a Super Bowl without Kurt Warner though. Not even close. What a WR does is just not that impactful. He finishes a play in which 4 or 5 other things have to go just right for him even to have a chance to impact the game. He can't even use his legs in the way that a RB can to change the outcome. If the ball is thrown poorly, or the pass protection is poor then nothing he does can change that. If the defense chooses to bring a safety over the top on him then any ball thrown his way will likely fall to the ground or worse, nothing he does can change that. Even if he executes a brilliant move and pulls away from the defenders there's a real chance something else went wrong behind him and it all goes for naught. There's a reason Randy Moss hasn't won three or four Super Bowls as the greatest WR of our times. And it isn't his attitude, more like his attitude is a result of all of the above. You remember Keyshawn and his "just throw me the damn ball!" That's a WR's problem in a nutshell: the damn ball can wind up anywhere at any time and the WR has very little control of anything other than the well thrown/undercovered balls thrown very close to him.
but they can. if you ANYTHING on fitz's side, it's caught. with his dives, his insane hands, his range, speed, height etc. Sure the cards miss the SB without warner, but they miss it without fitz as well.
PS... i don't want to derail this thread, unless fitzgerald becomes magically available. i'll stop talking about him.
Most of the Super Bowl winning teams in NFL history have had a great QB on them. A few of them have had a great RB (Payton, Riggins, Jamal Lewis) instead. I guess one or two might have been all defense, although even the Bears and Ravens had a great back helping to move the chains. Name the team that won the Super Bowl that had a great WR without either of the other two offensive pieces. I seriously doubt that team exists. It just does not happen. WR's are great eye-candy and coupled with a great QB they can be decisive at times. Without the great QB they are just fluff on the side of the field watching the action that really matters between the tackles.
The Chiefs are not gonna trade Bowe....after being benched he made no waves and has been playing well in the preseason
I'm not jumping to conclusions but when Francesa asked Tannenbaum about Favre he had the same type of answers. He even gave that same laugh I remember at the end. IDK if we'll get him but I definitely think we're going to try. John Clayton has said a 1st and a 4th would get it done. I personally make that deal.
It Tanny isn't at least making a call and legit offer he is a fool and after this season should part like his boys Edwards and Mangini did.
I don't understand why people bring up Bowe as an option. Was there talk of KC wanting to deal him? Why would they do that?
Because Scott Pioli is running the show there now and he knows WR is the last place you want to start rebuilding. He'd take picks for Bowe in a heartbeat and use them next year to firm up the trenches again. Specifically: his guards are 32 and 33 and his right tackle is 33. In the 3-4 he wants to run he's got a 30 year old journeyman NT and a 33 year old strongside end. The rightside of his linebacking crew are 34 and 36. Believe me he knows what the deal is in the trenches and he is going to shed outside value in a hurry if he can and rebuild the middle. Bowe is just too much value sitting outside the box on a team that is aging inside.
Yep, you build from the football out (i.e. the closer a player is to the football on the field, the more important they are to the team) -- a moniker that is generally accurate. I'm so tired of us selling our drafts out for a player or a prospect though. We need to stockpile picks for a change and keep adding depth.
I wouldn't give away more then a 2rd pick for a WR... Chances are next year we pick in the top 15 and Top 15 in the 2 round is a good place to pick a reciever. Next years 1st rounder HAS to be a DL...
Sp Speaking as someone whose team's star wideout recently blow a hole in their post-season dreams (see what I did there?!?1) just stay away from headache talents.
