That's really the point. The Jets are 0-5 in games decided by 5 points or less. Obviously in all of those games one play here or there can make all the difference, and all year the Jets haven't gotten that one play. Expecting to win all of them is not very reasonable, but expecting to win 2 of the 5 is not, and a 9-5 record is a whole lot better than 7-7.
It's frustrating because we have good weapons. Braylon Edwards is physically a #1. J-Co is reliable and has great hands. Keller should be Dallas Clark and he would be if he was with Peyton Manning. It's not as if we're the Miami Dolphins at WR. We have a good oline that gives our QB good protection and a running game. Our D is #1 in the NFL. I really hope we don't waste this in the coming years. This kind of reminds me of the Mets situation. 4 or 5 outstanding players/pitchers in their prime and so far they've been wasting it. The Jets don't have a huge weakness on either side of the ball except QB. I guess the one thing we could really use is a pass rushing DE. it would be nice not to have to blitz to get pressure. with our coverage that would be nice.
I feel bad for guys like Revis who have done so much for the team, gave 200% and have nothing to show for it.
we have a rookie qb , if it wasnt for those two assholes flacco and ryan last year, going to the playoffs would not have been expected
That #1 defensive ranking is a mirage, real #1 Defenses don't allow THREE GW drives in the final minutes of games.
The D is on the field the majority of the game because of the 20 INTs in 14 games and an inept OC. Of course they're gonna be a bit more vulnerable at the end of the game.
12 of his INTs came in 3 games, 15 in in 4 games. the other 10 games our QBs have thrown 5 INts. The D was great yesterday for 3 1/2 qtrs, the O should have had at least 9 more pts on the board and it should have been over but the STs botched 3 FGAs and thr D was asked to make ONE stop. All we had to do was keep them out of the EZ and we couldn't do it AGAIN. By the way, on average we have had the ball 31:23 compared to 29:28 for opponents. Yesterday we had the ball 29:36, Atlanta had it 30:24 It's not like Atlanta had it 40 mins and we wore out.
It's a great foundation, we were in almost all our games and could be 12-2. I think that's a great sign for our future, and I'm looking forward to the many seasons ahead of us. The defense will only get better as will Mark, hopefully they let him air it out these next two games so we can see what he can do without the handcuffs.
I said this in another thread, but I'll add it here too. This is a passing league and our passing attack isn't good. When Sanchez develops into an NFL QB and we have at least an average passing attack we'll have a lot more wins. Top 5 Passing Attacks: Indianapolis Colts Houston Texans New Orleans Saints New England Patriots San Diego Chargers 4 of those 5 are in a playoff spot right now and the other one is still in the hunt. Top 5 Rushing Attacks: New York Jets Tennessee Titans Carolina Panthers Miami Dolphins New Orleans Saints Only one of those teams would be in the playoffs if they started today and that team also has the 3rd best passing attack in the league. You need defense and a rushing attack, but you also have to have at least an average passing attack. The Jets are 29th in passing.
Good teams win those close ones and average/bad teams lose them. The goal next year will be to get over the hump in those close games but nothing is guaranteed.
That's what I'm saying we are right on the cusp of being 12-2 and not 7-7. Another year under Rex, another year for the defense to get more acquainted with the defense and Rex can bring in more of his type of guys. Being in almost every game down to the last play does not mean to me that the team is bad, it means they're good now and will be great very soon. Denver and Baltimore are only 1 game ahead, and Denver's conference record is 6-5 to our 5-5. I know it's a long shot but we still have a small chance. It's god that we have 2 AFC games left, we can still catch Baltimore too. Crazier things have happened, unlikely but you never know.
To put this loss on the defense is asinine. Atlanta got one lucky run by Snelling on the last drive. We lost this game because of two reasons. One was our lack of dicipline. We have too many STUPID penalties. A facemask by Donald Strickland on the last drive. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by Thomas Jones. A late hit by Alan Faneca on our last drive. STUPID STUPID STUPID. The second reason we lost was because of our idiotic FG unit. 1) muffed snap 2) missed FG 3) blocked FG. All of which is inexcusable.
Unprecedented not to make the playoffs? Serious question... has it EVER happened in the history of the NFL where a team has the #1 rated Defense, and the #1 rated rushing offense, and NOT made it to the playoffs. Common sense would tell you "NO" is the answer, but I don't know how to figure it out. It's a bitter pill to swallow anyway.
According to Rex we are in a better position this week then last week to make the playoffs, thanks to Jacksonville, Denver, and Miami losing. We can control our own destiny by our game next week if the Dolphins, Ravens, and Jaguars all lose their 1pm games. We play at 4:15.
Yah. we just have to beat a team that is 14-0, at home and has the best QB this side of Johnny Unitas.
