The defense can't get off the field. That affects the offense too because the opponents defense stays fresh. The problem (besides Coleman) is our DE's. They suck. They may have been decent through the first 10-11 games, but it's a 'what have you done for me lately' scenario. Receivers can't get open downfield either. That's what we need to draft or sign going into next year. A speedy receiver and a pass rusher. Also, pray that Favre returns.
Yeah our defense could not get off the field for shit last week. The 2 4th down conversions by SF really made the difference in the game, since they scored both times they converted. Earlier in the season, our defense had some fire and actually stopped a few HUGE 4th down plays. is it just me, or has Jenkins had his 2 worst games the last 2 weeks?
When the offense struggles to maintain drives, the defense feels it and wears down over the course of the game. The Jets had 6 possessions in the second half and ran the ball THREE times. That isn't because of the defense, it's because of poor play calling and not committing to the run.
the main reason we didn't have the ball very much is because we stopped running the ball. its no secret that running the ball chews up the clock. if we had run the ball a little more we probably would have had a much higher time of possession. instead we started passing and not maintaining possessions on offense. this in turn hurts the defense who is already struggling, and is now tired from being on the field too much. that then hurts the offense more because they can't the ball enough to try to get some consistency going on. so when all that happens everything becomes a mess.
Funny: In games against our toughest oponents, you see the commitment to run. Then, in those games, you also happen to just See favre have good games. Amazing how that works. Then, in games against crappy teams, with defense that can't even remotely stop the run, we just don't run at all. Like, what? That is all on coaching.
I thought u were smarter than that Mick? They only time they would know ur passing is when you actually pass, not before that. Its like, you can't realize something until it actually happens. U don't know for sure if its a pass...especially with the Jets. We pass on 3rd and 2 and 4th & 1, but we run when its 3rd & 15. Nothing obvious in NFL... Regardless, Schotty needs to be shot !!! He's been very very pathetic in all the losses, except for maybe against the Chargers. I know we have Favre, future HOFer, but thats not enough to warrant passing in ANY situation. He's not playing at that level this yr. He has been good, not great. If he was playing like when he was 27, it would have been a different story. I think the CS is giving far too much importance to Favre, than the team itself. It needs to stop right now before we get our shit handed to us.
i am all about you need to run the ball. i agree you run until they can stop it. this is a very simple key to success. if they cannot stop your running game you are all set to do WHATEVER YOU WANT. part of the offenses job is to keep the defense off the field. part of doing that is keeping drives going and part of that is running the ball consistently. you can blame the defense all you want for not getting off the field but you can blame the offense for making them go back out there so many times and so quickly. i posted up after the 2 games against oakland and kc about our passing far more than running and went through the top teams in the league and found them all to be even or run heavy teams. there is a reason for that. the jets seemed to figure that out and have now gone back to being way way way too pass happy. hell there is no reason for it they run the ball WELL when they actually fuckin run it! ask anyone and they will tell you a good running game and play action are a lethal combination. the fact that half the people on the board can tell run or pass by the personnel just scares the doo doo out of me. someone posted that jenkins seems to have had his worst 2 games in the past 2, i am sure that he is probably getting a little worn down, at that size and this point of the season every second he can spend on the sideline is soo soo important. thats part of running the ball. on top of the fact that everyone has recognized our weakness in coverage by our ilbs have really hurt him the last few weeks
Use the same formation for both and it isn't obvious. We've run out of 3 wide ace formations before, and damnit we can do it again. Use Keller in the slot and if they wanna use the big set against us, they'll either have to play 9 on with a safety on Keller or use a linebacker against Keller. Want misdirection? Bring in Baker on some run plays and Wayne Hunter as an OL eligible on play action and pass plays that keep him in for protection. Misdirection doesn't have to mean thirty shifts! All it means is looking one way and going the other. Shotgun draws, big I play fake to the HB to set up a screen to the FB, that kind of stuff! Remember the quick throw plays? We used those a lot against Tennessee. Favre fakes a quick throw to the receiver, turns around and hands the ball to Thomas Jones. Next time Favre fakes the quick throw, fakes the hand off, and throws down field for a big gain. Fake quick, handoff, and finally we actually used the quick throw because they stopped reacting to it. THAT is misdirection! Not "HAHA WE'RE MOVING AROUND!"
for god's sake, if we give TJ the rock, 25 times a game. WE WILL WIN. I said it before and wouldnt you know we gave it to him 25+ times in both New England and Tennesse and shocker, we won both games. Then over the past 2 game stretch he barely sees the rock 25 times total and we lose both games horrendously. RUN THE BALL TJ will get shit done!!!!
I think the conclusion that should be reached is not to run. In the Tenn. game, we were clicking on passing first--then running. In the oakland game he ran well and we got 13 pts. The idea to build the offense around the run--if we had Pittsburgh's defense I might agree. But with our D, we need to put points on the board. Thus far, when TJ is the focus, we don't put points on the board.
It’s tough to commit to the run and a 8 minute scoring drive running down the clock when the defense gives up 3 scores in 2.5 minutes.
