I learned fifty years ago not to get angry - it's an emotion that consumes; I settled for basic frustration. What has been harder to accomplish though, was in those few brief moments in the last half century not to allow myself to get too excited when it ever looked like the corner was about to be turned.

Some day they will turn the corner, simply due to the law of averages, if nothing else and I hope to be around to see it. In the meantime, I can watch every week with few expectations and some cautious optimism while my frustrations come more from those whose fervid irrational exuberance shout "Championship" at every turn than what the team itself does on the field.

I don't think this old dog could learn the trick of rooting for another team without becoming one of those winning bandwagon riders before I turned ten years old - any older than that only scorn is required.

Hah! You think that there is such a thing as quarterback security? Are you one of the guys who celebrated Sanchez, Darnold, Wilson and Favre and Rodgers? How much "security" did they deliver? This is the New York Jets - there is no security at any position. "Hello? You play to win the game!"

Get back to me with your tanking plans when they come with a guaranteed performance draftee.

I cant watch anymore. I am in the UK but I have been watching the Jets firstly through highlights in the late 80's, then live Radio, finally internet. Up at all hours to watch games at 3 and 4am in the morning. I moved to canada for 10 years and it was easier as at least the games were on at a normal time on Sundays.

I cant watch this season. I watched the opening game and well. I cant watch us lose like this anymore. Now we are 0-4. I will never support another team. So basically I am falling out of Love for the NFL. I have a ticket for the London game as that is my Soccer teams stadium. So would be wrong not to go and with them being so close. I have l flown to NY many times, texas and Buffalo to watch games. But This is the lowest I have felt. its just too many bad seasons rolled into it. So many years of not even sniffing the playoffs. The team looks bad. 3 hours of pain and then another defeat.

It nots like I have better things to do. But being awake at 1am on a Tuesday morning until 4am UK time to watch them lose to the 0-3 dolphins. I cant anymore. I need something from them. A sign they can get better. but I dont see it at all.

Funny that this thread started about the time I was evaluating my Jet experience.

29 years fan. All of them season ticket holder. Went to last two UK games at Wembly and Tottenham.

In all those seasons, I would eventually realize this team was not going to win games and thus I would concentrate on the tailgate and the fan friends I’ve met and developed over these years.

I’ve reached that point once again. I won’t be disappointed in Jets performance. That is not why I do this.

It’s always come back to the tailgate. Best part of my Jets experience.

Hope to see you at Redemption brewery before the October 12 game at Tottenham.

Best comp I can think of for Darnold's career arc is Alex Smith. He took a while to figure it out but when he did he was what I'd call an "elite game manager". Didn't set the world on fire but was extremely efficient and good enough to win with.

Darnold was on a very solid trajectory coming out of his rookie season. The decision to hire Adam Gase was one of the most confounding decisions in franchise history and will haunt the Jets for years to come.

15 years ago I knew the backups of every team. I was fully enveloped into the NFL. I was a rabid, foaming at the mouth Jets fan. I watched every Jets game and just about every other game I could. Today, I’m not even sure who starts for most teams. I spend more time watching college QB’s in hopes maybe we land one someday, but my interest in the NFL in general is at al all time low thanks to what Woody has been doing to us.

I tend to get more into the other sports I follow, mainly soccer as my team there is doing fairly well at the moment - I rarely watch a full jets game anymore as it isn't enjoyable and the result seems like a foregone conclusion and if we do win I et little enjoyment out of it as even if they win a battle (game) you know they will lose the war (season).

I can tell where my fandom is at as the Jets are coming to the UK soon and normally this would've been one of the highlights of my year - now I look at ticket costs and hassle to get down to London and just thought "I can't be arsed" and I am not going, which previously I would've seen as unthinkable.

Sadly I think Woody may be the antidote to the law of averages

There are no DVRs in the UK?

I have watched two or three of the games at a later time this year simply because 1 PM was inconvenient for one reason or another. I can isolate from scores until I am done watching with little problem. I also get to see it in under two hours, even with replaying anything I want to see over. It also helps in not needing to watch so many BS commercials and fast forwarding through the dead time between plays and some of the dopey chatter of the announcers.

I will always be a Jets fan, I just won’t always give a shit about their season. This season is one of those seasons I’ve checked out, and I did the moment we lost by two because Glenn went for two in the first quarter of the first game.

I can watch losing seasons if there is the hope for growth and improvement. When it’s clear our coach has no clue what the hell he’s doing, there is no upside to keep me engaged. I hope he figures it out; I’ll give him another shot next season. But this season is done for me, even if I continue to follow them, and it’s because it’s clear Glenn is not qualified to be a head coach.

I guess being a fan is like an addiction. I grew up a Dodger fan in the 50's and even though they broke my heart when they left in '58, I still root for them (also root for the Mets, so it balances out.) Started rooting for the Jets when they drafted Namath in '64 and I'll admit I'm still addicted. I live half the year in a retirement community in the SF Bay Area. I wear Jets T's to the fitness center, one guy asked me if Joe was still QBing the team, another guy said I must have very big cajones to wear that shirt. For me, being a Jets fan is a badge of honor (or disgrace), it means I've been tested (and how) but still loyal.

I will never understand why so many Jets fans obsess about getting the highest possible draft pick -- this franchise has proven, quite conclusively, that they will pick the wrong guy every time. In a case where there are say 4 first round-rated QBs, I 100% feel the Jets will be better off letting the rest of the league pick 3 and the Jets get whomever is left than if the Jets get to pick the one they prefer. Giving this organization options always results in their selecting the wrong one.

Best post so far in my opinion ..and just FYI I was in high school back in 1969 when Namath won it all for us ..sigh

You just become casual observer rather than emotionally involved

I posted before on another thread this is just the Johnson family money making machine frauding the customers with poor management

Poor GMs and poor coaching equals losing seasons with or without good talent

The mass of current Jet fans paying to see this rip off are deluded ( I will never go to MetLife ever again)

The hard working middle class fans deserve better

You are right on evaluation but actually getting the #1 or #2 pick tends to suggest that we might select a new QB - that automatically comes with some hope. Constantly picking #7 to #10 means we keep loading up on the premier CBs and OLs and picking QBs from the scrapheap.

I get it, but my complaint is that we, as a fanbase, get way too wrapped up in hope and not nearly enough in building something to last. The organizations that Superbowls in this league generally don't do it with a QB they selected in the top 5 -- and those teams are much better at picking than are our beloved Jets.

    Hurts - 53rd overall
    Mahomes - 10th overall
    Stafford - trade
    Brady - trade
    Brady - 199th overall
    Foles - 88th overall
    P. Manning - trade
    Wilson - 75th overall
    Flacco - 18th overall
    E. Manning - trade (I think he kind of counts either way [1st overall vs 4th overall + 3rd round + future 1st and 5th])
    Rodgers - 24th overall
    Brees - free agent
    Roethlisberger - 11th overall
    P. Manning - 1st overall
    Johnson -227th overall

The list goes on, Kurt Warner, Trent Dilfer, Favre, Steve Young, Rypien, Hostetler, Montana, Doug Williams... Troy Aikman, Jim McMahon and Peyton Manning are the only top 5 pick QBs that have won a Superbowl for the team that drafted them since the heady days of Terry Bradshaw and Bob Griese. Even Elway was a Trade. Count him with Eli if you want. Note, I'm not talking about #1 overall, I'm talking about top 5. Hell, if you make it top 10, you only pick up two guys: Simms and Mahomes.

Yes, we put all our hopes in these high picks, but history says that is an extra dumb thing upon which to pin our hopes. But, we are Jets fans, so maybe that is obvious.

I don't disagree. Our QB selection strategy is usually choose one in Round 5+ that never sees the field and then sign a washed-up free agent.

Much of your list is Rounds 1-3 and, other than Hackenberg, we don't often pick QB here. I think we should.

I noticed I'm responding to other responses rather than the point of the thread:

I'm in this thing. I admit that hiring Gase and bringing in Rodgers both turned off my give-a-shit in ways that I have not experienced in 40+ years of watching this team, so perhaps I'm getting soft in my old age, but I'm still in it.

I don't disagree. Particularly the way this team wastes 2nd round picks -- it wouldn't hurt my feelings to pick a QB in round 2 every other year no matter what.

    QB is such a difficult thing to evaluate by merely looking at a “who has won SB’s” perspective. Brady skews the statistics pretty badly. There are also a bunch of top picks that just couldn’t get past Brady;

Matt Ryan, Philip Rivers, Jared Goff, Andrew Luck, Donovan McNabb and to a lesser extent Peyton Manning sneaking past a couple more times would’ve helped the case for top 5 picks. Mahomes has become the same road block for Josh Allen who is right outside the top ten and Burrow (sorta not really?).

Your point is definitely granted. But I think before we’re talking about SB victories I’d like to see a couple ten win seasons in a 4 year period lol.
