If this trade was made in the middle of the 2011 season, I would have been very happy. However, Montero looked so good at the end of the year, while Pineda evidently hit the rookie wall. More often than not, though, stud pitching prospect>>stud hitting prospect. Yanks feel he's a legit #2 with high potential. Only 22 years old (like Jesus).
Very nice move...Wish it was a bigger package for Felix though. Pineda is a an amazing talent...Montero was a surplus but I liked him alot. Right now this favors the Yankees, but Montero can be a beast for Mariners
Yeah, I definitely would have preferred a more proven commodity for Montero, but Pineda is still young and very talented.
Can't fucking believe they got rid of Montero, the guy was ready to be the next Pujols. Stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid
I'm down. ARod will be the DH long term and Pineda has flashed at the MLB level. Signing Kuroda means Hughes/Burnett compete for 5th spot, one would believe.
Yankees don't think Montero can be a defensive catcher at the MLB level..not for them anyway and they are loaded with catchers in the system.
Lets not go that far, hes a good hitter no doubt about it but defensively he is a liability. Romine and Sanchez are still young up and comers. We will be fine at catcher in the future.
The New York Yankees have traded top prospect Jesus Montero and right-handed pitcher Hector Noesi to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for phenom pitcher Michael Pineda and righty Jose Campos, a source told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark.
This move is going to make more sense in June when the Yankees will continue to score runs despite not having Montero and Yankee fans will hopefully not be complaining about how aside from CC and Nova, everyone on the pitching staff is shaky at best. I'll admit losing Montero hurt because he is a tremendous bat and as of now I dont see who the next great offensive prospect is in the Yankee system (could be Slade if hes healthy). Still that is a long term problem to be worried about later.
Gotta give something to get something. Montero was never going to be a longterm Yankee. He's a DH. Yankees have too much money invested in other guys who they need to keep the DH spot open for. Pineda is 22 and very talented, and they still have Banuelos and Betances. Really like this move. Much easier and safer to use big money to get a hitter than a pitcher.
Lol what? Montero hits well for a few weeks after being called up and all of a sudden he's the next Pujols? Montero struggled for almost 2 years in triple A, and all that projected power never came to be. He's still young, but he doesn't have the 40+ HR power that everyone thought he would have when the Yanks initially signed him. Not to mention Gary Sanchez is projected to be better than Montero, Russel Martin is a good catcher, and Romine is a very talented catcher. Oh, and aside from CC, the pitching staff is old and very pedestrian (Nova will regress this year). We just got one of the better young pitchers in the league for a 300 hitter with no position to play on the Yankees. With Jeter and Arod getting older, DH was not an option for Montero.
Yeah, this was a brilliant move by the guy I hate most associated with the Yankees, Cashman. To trade a career DH for a potential ace that you control for the next 5 years is brilliant..to add Kuroda, a bona fied #3 for only a one year 10 million dollar deal is too. Now they can go out and either trade Hughes or Burnette for a DH or maybe sign Pena or Damon to do the same. It would be much better to have a lefty at DH than a rightie(Montero) anyway in Yankee stadium.
