http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news...d=2401930&vkey=spt2008news&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy\ I would really like to see both his and Paul O'Neill's number retired some time in the future.
I'm really looking forward to Dan Pasqua Day. Jeez, if the Yankees had a sumbitch like that, I'd pick them to win the pennant this year.
Bernie deserves a day like that to celebrate his career. He deserves his number retired just as much as O'Neill does, meaning he doesn't.
I think 10P is right. Mo is grandfathered, so his number is still his, just shared. The Yankees already have a dual retired number, so this wouldn't be totally unheard of.
Torre had a shot to have his number retired until he opened his mouth. He may still but now it won't be for years.
I sincerely hope, with all of my heart, that Joe Torre never gets his number retired. That's not even because I don't particularly like the guy, but because, seriously, what justification is there to put his number next to names like Mantle, Ruth, DiMaggio? Bernie doesn't exactly warrant a retiring either, but surely more than Torre.
See, I don't exactly agree there. The Yankees that have been retired surely deserved it. The only guys you could make a decent case against were Mattingly and Rizzuto. Rizzuto was beloved by Yankees fans, and deserved it more for his lifelong dedication to the organization than anything else. Mattingly was the lone bright spot in what was the most dismal decade for the club since before Ruth donned a NY cap. Bernie on the other hand you can make a clear case against. He was never an elite ballplayer, and was not as integral to his team as any of the other retired numbers. The teams that won with Bernie did so without any one player being far and beyond better than any other. The one case you can make in his favor is his postseason hits. But to me, that's just not a strong enough argument. That's why I think his number should not be retired.
Also, Williams is second (jeter is 1st) to baseball's all-time leader in postseason games played (115), 2nd (to Manny) in postseason homers (22) and 2nd (to Jeter) in postseason runs (83). He is first in postseason RBI's (80) beating manny ramirez by a 16 point margin. Maybe we need to put the rest of his career into perspective... With 2,336 career hits, he finished behind only Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and Derek Jeter on the all-time Yankee list. Hits Rank Player H PA 1. Lou Gehrig 2721 9660 2. Bernie is one of just seven Yankees to play at least 16 seasons in the Bronx. not to mention he is an all-time fan favorite and was an integral part to one of our greatest dynasties.
I'm not arguing that bernie deserves to get his number retired but i think that he isnt getting shown enough love.
No way Bernie or Torre should have their numbers retired... O'Neil I wouldn't mind... Jeter & Rivera are givens
How could you not honor Torre, are you guys fucking nuts? How many managers in baseball history won 4 World Series? McCarthy, Stengel and Mack are the only managers in the history of the game with more Championships. Alston has 4 to tie Joe. The little midget Huggins has a monument and he won 3. Yankee fans are straight up RETARDED!!
