This forum has been on life support for a few months. Trying to get a little discussion, even though it's very early in the process. Now for the Bad news, I'm usually very optimistic going into the season, not this year. I'm projecting the Jets to finish 6-10/7-9 range, which will leave them with a pick in the 9-13 range. Round 1) JARVIS JONES, OLB, GEORGIA - the best pass rusher in this draft class, he's almost unblockable. Jet fans should be thrilled we finally get a star pass rusher. This is a no brainer pick if Jones is available. Round 2) JOSEPH FAURIA, TE, UCLA - second best TE in this draft class. Huge target with great hands and solid blocker that can still add to his frame. The Jets will have a tough decision to resign Keller and even if Keller stays, the 2 TEs will compliment each other. The Jets give Sanchez another option, like other 2 TE teams. Fauria isn't going to be a part time player, he will see a lot of action. Redzone nightmare!! Round 3) STEPFAN TAYLOR, RB, STANFORD - a player I really like that would compliment Ganaway, who I expect to have a breakout rookie year (2nd half). Greene's status for 2012 is make it or break it. Shonn Greene has been disappointing and hasn't shown enough consistent play. IMO, Greene gives up on a lot of plays and could put forth more effort. Ganaway & Taylor would be a fresh exciting backfield. Smart player that would be a great teammate. Round 4) ISAIAH JOHNSON, S, GEORGIA TECH - Big safety that has good coverage skills. Another Safety in the mix is a good idea. GT has produce some solid safety prospects over the years. I do believe one of our new safeties drafted in 2012 is going to emerge and play very well. Round 5) DAVID YANKEY, OT, STANFORD - Solid player that should be a good RT in the NFL, stock could rise since Stanford Olineman have had recent success. Round 6) TERRY HAWTHORNE, CB, Illinois - Had a good year in the Big Ten, could go higher. More depth adding a CB is a smart move. Round 7 ) CONNER VERNON, WR, DUKE - a hard working good hands player.
With Hunter as our starting RT, Moore/Slauson as FA, id be absolutely FURIOUS if the Jets dont draft OL in the first 2 or 3 rounds. You cant run the ball and you cant protect your QB without a line. I dont care if we get a guard or a tackle, but we got to get young healthy athletic guys
I understand your frustration, but you can't address all needs in the draft, that's what FA is all about. It could be Dustin Keller's last year as a Jet, that's why I drafted Fauria. Even if Keller stays the Jets need to upgrade theTE positon and make it a dual threat on occasion. The Jets have neglected a pass rusher and Jones is too good to pass. Vlad was a Rd 2 pick so don't believe a 2nd or 3rd Round OT/G is going to be our Savior.
I'm guessing you have Montgomery and Keke Mingo off the board at this point. If thats the case thats fine. Taylor is a great prospect. Absolutely the unsung hero of the Stanford offense last year
I'm having a hard time getting past the 6-10/7-9 record. Wow, that would be a hugely disappointing season by any account.
Yeah, If that happens, Sanchez might be run out of town and we may be looking for a new QB. Otherwise I really like the 1st three picks you have WW.
If Sparano is still on our coaching staff next year, I strongly strongly believe Fasano will be a Jet. Hes a better fit than DK could ever be, and I just dont see us drafting a TE that early with all our other needs. Especially since Fauria is more of a receiving tight end, who isnt a great blocker (albeit has potential but so do most tight ends). Plus OL guys are just really expensive in free agency. Where tight ends well arent
I think you underestimate Fauria's blocking abilty. Fauria has been a willing blocker, but he needs to add 20 lbs to his frame, which will only help.
I don't know much about Taylor so I'll take your word on the upgrade but is it worth going after another mid-round RB? We always seem to burn 3rd/4th round picks on mediocre RBs. I'd rather see us use a higher pick (if there's anyone worthy) or attempt to develop what we have in order to get the all-purpose RB that we crave. I think I'd rather go S in the 3rd.
Stepfan Taylor is a special player. Taylor makes plays and consistently ran very well behind Stanford's great O-Line, this year will see if he can contine without DeCastro & Martin. I like Taylor's ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. IMO, as of right now, the only RB worthy of a 1st Rd pick will be Lattimore. Taylor, Montee Ball, Knile Davis and maybe Joseph Randle are 2/3 round prospects and maybe one or more could emerge into late round one like Doug Martin last year.
Not to rain on your parade WW85, but if we finish 6-10 or 7-9, it will mean the end of Mark Sanchez & time for us to seize the opportunity to draft QB Tyler Wilson of Arkansas.
I should at least propose something of an alternative ---- below is if we finish 6-10 or 7-9. 1) Tyler Wilson QB Arkansas (please see my above post for reason). 2) Alex Hurst RT LSU (if we finish 6-10 or 7-9, its same to assume that not only did Sanchez fail, but Wayne Hunter failed as well. Hurst is starting at RT for the 3rd year in a row). 3) Gabe Jackson G Mississippi St. 6-4 320. Yes, its time to hit the panic button on the offense. Both Brandon Moore & Slauson are FAs after this season. Sorry, -- thats all I got. Just not as good as WW85.
if were in position to draft Jones it means we didnt make the playoffs. Everyone knows of Brandon Jenkins from FSU. best burst off the snap ive seen since Dwight Freeney. Nobody talks about the guy across from him Bjoern Werner. A German badass who is in the mold of a poor mans Julius Peppers if he progresses his game this year after being highly underrated on the FSU defense.
We have 2 starting QBs under contract on the roster If Sanchez fails it becomes Tebow time I dont buy Sanchez failing, although it could be a rough season with a poor oline, a remake of the recieving corp (which is MUCH better, but takes a while to get going), and a brand new OC/offensive system.
Love the first pick, and think we could be looking at guys like Montgomery, Mingo, Okafor, Jeffcoat --- this class is flush with 3-4 OLB prospect. I think Mingo has the highest upside, closer to an Aldon Smith as a raw edge rusher with tremendous upside while Jones is more of a Von Miller type who is very good and consistent. My favorite TE in college football is CJ Fiedorowicz from Iowa. I think in a few years he'll be a Top 3 TE in the NFL along with Graham and Gronk and he really seems like an ideal mix of the two. I haven't felt this strongly about a TE prospect since Gronk's time at Arizona. 6'6, 255 lbs, 4.5/4.6 speed, great receiver, good with high upside as a blocker, plays with a shitty QB and offense. He'll be featured for the first time this season so he may explode onto the scene and be the 1st TE off the board, but if not he'd be a Gronk-like get in Round 2. I'd love to hit the FA market next offseason for a guy like Jonathan Stewart, or if the Panthers are determined to re-sign Stewart and need to clear cap space we'll take DeAngelo Williams on the cheap for a mid-late round pick to clear up their books. I really believe we need a safety in the first 3 rounds, as a guy like Ray Ray Armstrong would help cover Gronkowski, Chandler, and Egnew at TE in our division. Egnew is going to be really good in Miami and Gronk is obviously a beast -- at 6'4 with very underrated athleticism he could be a matchup dynamo as a safety. A guy like Bacarri Rambo would also make a lot of sense. I see you took a safety in the 4th but I don't know much about him and feel like the quality will fall out pretty quickly. Antonio Allen should surprise as a SS, but I have my concerns with Landry's healthy and our other safety spot and believe we'll be shopping for one next year. Dashon Goldson will also be a FA in which case a deal with him --- he's one of the best in the league and unfortunately is peaking in his prime (sounds weird, right) so the 49ers don't want to give him a deal now that covers him through the early-mid stages of his decline. We need a RT and an OG....a 3rd-4th spent there would go a long ways toward improving our run game and pass protection. I like the thought process behind it. I'd be curious as to what you think of CJ Fiedorowicz from Iowa if you do some due diligence on him. I think he's just going to be an absolute stud in the league, better than in college because crap QB, offense, run first team, no other weapons to draw coverage off ---> deflated stats ---> could all lower his perceived draft stock much like Gronk's.
Sanchez is under contract in the sense that for the $$ books, he has 2012 and 2013 to prove himself. Sorry, but as much as I admire Tim Tebow, - I disagree w/the premise that he is starting QB material. Finishing 6-10 or 7-9, gives us an early pick in the 1st round. Prime QB draft territory. If you look at projected power rankings for the 2012 season, the overwhelming majority of the teams expected to finish in the lower half of the 2012 standings (and therefore picking early in the 2013 NFL Draft) already have a young recently drafted QB. So a quality QB who is the 3rd ranked at his position, or even the 2nd ranked, could possibly fall to your lap at slots 9-13. As I said before, Sanchez is really locked up for 2 more seasons, ---- meaning the drafted QB could ride the pine for his rookie season as opposed to getting thrown to the flames from the start. AGAIN, --- this is all based on the premise that the team finishes 6-10 or 7-9. If Sanchez has a very good 2012 season, - how are we going to finish 6-10?? Because of the defense??? You HAVE to assume that a bad finish meant another bad year for the QB.
I don't think of Tebow as a starting QB either, but hes here and hes on the roster. Hes going to improve (who knows how much). But the reality is Sanchez Tebow and McElroy are all under contract. This team can't afford another QB unless they trade people. Worst case scenario you give Sanchez or Tebow another year, and if that fails you go out and get a free agent QB. Obviously youre not gonna get a Rodgers or Peyton, but could land someone like Matt Moore or the next Matt Flynn.
I see Jets finishing with 9-10 wins honestly. Root for the Jets WW85! Be optimistic and feel confident the good guys can make the playoffs! Also I think we will need a RT somewhere very early as I think Maybin can put forth a solid year at OLB. I get we might need a Pace replacement but I think Rex can find someone in rounds 2 or 3 for that. Also if Tyler Eifert was around in the 3rd round, then I'd love him. Sparano liked Fasano and Eifert is a far better receiving threat than Fasano ever was at ND. I also think this could be a big year for Eifert in the blocking department...hopefully he shines and Cierre Wood can go and have a pretty good year running behind Eifert. Eifert might shoot up to round 2 with a real good year. Would not be a terrible pick at all if Keller doesn't factor in for us moving forward.
1. Regardless of whether Sanchez tanks this season or not, Jets are not drafting QB in the coming draft. That would be a colossal stupidity at its best. 2. That said, OLB at 1st round makes sense. I don't know about TE with 2nd however. I say NO to RB with 3rd. I would like to see Jets pick up OLB, S and OT with first three. Serviceable RBs can be had at 5th and below as long as you have a functional OL (meaning: RB spot can wait till other holes are filled.) 3. If Jets are hell-bent on going with 4 men front, (and Ellis does not pan out as 3T) then DT is much more pressing need than OLB. Jets will need to draft DT with 1st or 2nd. (Just pray they don't draft another Dslob with it.)
Coples and Wilkerson are both going to be playing 4-3 DT, and the teams not going to give up on Ellis after his (effectively) first season. Obviously you got to go BPA when you draft, but id like to see a 4-3 DE since this is where your primary pass rusher is gonna be. Someone like Jarvis Jones that the OP mentioned would be solid. Id love to see the reaction of fans and pundits alike if we actually drafted William Gholston. I think 4-3 DE, 4-3 OLB, RG, RT need to be our biggest positions addressed. No way the Jets are drafting a big guy for the interior Dline early on, unless Rex truly thinks hes the next Ngata
