not by signing a ton of free agents but of course the coaching staff is going to try to make whoever they have into a championship team. the chances of that happening are very low but they will try and we will still re-build starting this year and continuing into at least next year.
We have been rebuilding for 5 years now. I don't see this offseason being much different any other offseasons that we have had in the last 5 years except this year we have more cap money to spend, we have more expereinced players and we have better talent, and a bigger question mark at QB. We have been in constant rebuilding mode except we have less players that need replacing this year. Our focus the last 5 years has been to rebuild while at the same time try to field a competitive team. I don't see any indication that philosphy has changed. This is not 2002 when we had to replace key starters because of cap problems. This is not 2004 when we had to totally overhaul our defense. We certainly have issues but on the other hand we have much more talent than any year since 2000.
Since we been rebuilding for the last 5 years if Eric doesn't get us to the playoffs in 3 of the next 5 years does that mean Herm was the better coach.?
They will build the team through the draft and a few 2nd and 3rd tier free agent players. The offseason is going to be all about the offensive line and the front 7 on defense. Once they have build up the lines to the point where they can control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball then we should be able to compete for a playoff spot. Our front 7 on defense needs a lot of work. And the o line has been gutted and will be built the right way. We are definetely rebuilding but I expect the team to be competitive in every game. I expect Manbaum to take Mario Williams with the 4th pick.
Lets check the evidence: 1. New Coach 2. New O-cordinator and system 3. New D-cordiantor and system 4. No franchise LT 5. Injured Franchise QB 5. Old Franchise RB Yep...i think that is called rebuilding....
I don't think that is a fair comparison. But Mangini is inheriting a much better team than Herm ever had and in much better shape youth wise, talent wise and cap wise. The future is bright. But regardless of whatever Mangini does I don't think its fair to compare him to other coaches rather it would be better to judge him by what he accomplishes himself. Herm is gone and his era is over. Hopefully there will be a lot to be happy about with Mangini and we won't remember the Herm era as our teams golden era. I for one am to old to relive 1970's style Jet football.
I think it's very fair. Coaches are like QB they judge by the shoes you just filled. Plus your even saying that Mangini has inheriting more talent then Herm had so we should make the playoffs then? Herm did!
Success is often a product of luck and good fortune. Many things we often cannot control. I always would place a higher value upon the process that goes into a particular decison than the end result. I loved the Herm era but I don't think its fair or productive to compare a successor to the former occupier on ones job. Whether its comparing Richard Todd to Joe Namath or Mangini to Herm. Rather I think its time to move on. There are many question marks at QB, NT, Rt and so on but we have a solid team and we are finally appear to be out of cap hell after spending the last 5 seasons there. When next season starts I could care less if Herm made the playoffs 3 of the last 5 years or in none of those years. All I will really care about is what we are doing to make the playoffs in 2006 and the future. I strongly disagree but I think you know that from previous threads. While I respect your opinion I would respectfully disagree and would say they inherited at best an average team that was then dismantled one year later thanks to cap problems.
That just the way they are judged. Now if the Jets don't make the playoffs for the next 3 season if not 2 just about everybody on here will want to fire our HC. Later it's Vodka time!
You're right Herm didn't decide to start Vinny two straight years over Chad, Vinny told Herm he was starting.
Again, why are you here? If you are so passionate about the Jets no need to hide it. Go to Finheaven and love up on those porpoise loving people. By the way, Wesley Welker is SOOO awesome!
I think you would have hard time finding any head coach that would have ever considered starting Chad in 2001 or 2002. The most interesting quote about Chad was from Curtis Martin at or near the end of the 2002 season. He said and something to the effect that they all (the players) used to watch Chad in practice and used to shake their heads. He went on to say he and others thought Chad was incapable of playing in the NFL with the weak arm he showed in practice. For the most part Curtis was right. If you watched Chad throw in 2002 almost all his passes were in the 2-7 yard range. The ones longer than 7 yards often became jump balls. Rather Herm should be given credit for taking a Chad a chance rather than starting Vinny against KC. Vinny was healthy and could have played. It would have the safer and more popular decision to start Vinny. Vinny had been playing well (absent the 1st half against NE) but the line was unable to protect him. Teams blitzed him unmercifully.
Give me a break, Herm could have had Roger Staubach on the bench and he wouldn't have put him on the field over Vinny.
Look at that. Standard JETS: if he's right tell him to F$%^ off... And thanks! Wes Welker is my favorite player!
