Can someone tell me why we wouldn't go after this guy with guns blazing to try to fix our most glaring problem. Let's go! Former #2 pick playing on the second team with the rams. Let's go get him and get going already. Thoughts?
thoughts are there is a reason he is playing with the #2 team. however, if all else fails why not...he wouldn't be my first option but if push comes to shove then yes why not?
funny you say that...the same thought crossed my mind when I was typing my post. Sadly, at the end of the day Smith is still an upgrade.
Sad ain't it? I think our best option is to somehow find a veteran somewhere and trade a late pick for him. At least have someone who is serviceable. The Rams apparently signed Barry Richardson just for depth, and he beat Smith for the starting role. I agree that WMFH needs to be replaced right now, but I actually have confidence that something will get done before the first game of the season. Call me crazy.
Jason Smith would probably be too pricey for whatever value he'd provide (relative)... Unless Schotty pulls a Mangenius and decides to give us players in exchange for his "old favorites"
I believe Smith is still on his initial contract? which is pre-rookie wage scale, thus making him insanely overpaid and probably something that would put us over the salary cap supposing the rams were even willing to swing a deal we felt comfortable with.
Can't hurt to try right? Restructure his contract trade him for Wayne freaking Hunter and if Jason Smith still sucks than well were screwed anyway
Smith is due $4.5 MIL guaranteed this season after he was restructured. Hunter is a bargain at 2.4MIL compared to Smith. If the Rams cut him then maybe Tanny picks him up after Week 1 at a non-guaranteed minimum salary but not until then.
Someone in this league is gonna be smart enough to make Jason Smith a guard..which is wear he belongs. He never had the height or technique needed for the Tackle position. He was great in college there b/c Baylor needed him there by necessity & he could get by on strength alone against college ends. He has impressive physical tools..they're just better suited for "the phone booth" if you will. As an RT for this team? I gotta say..he's a very inconsistent pass protector on the edge, still much better than Hunter..and he's a good not great run blocker. He is indeed very talented & maybe the light bulb goes off with a change of scenery. Maybe.Maybe not.But either way he'd still be better than Hunter.
Schotty got his 'old favorite' alright LOL! Tanny may have his issues, but he is great at flat out ripping off his old coaches
