By The Numbers: 28?Times the Jets have opened on the road since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. They are 10-17 in those games, but won their last season opener on the road, beating Tennessee 23-16 in 2006 in coach Eric Mangini?s first game. 28 of 38 road openers. WTF? You would have thought since the Giants played a Thursday game, The Jets would have hosted the home opener.
Yeah, the Mets screwed us in the early 80's, but his makes no sense with the Giants playing on Thursday.
This is great? Go Jets??? hmy: Seriously, I feel going into this season we can compete with any one IF all the additions are able to adjust to the team quickly. On paper we should stomp the fins, but I want to see them Turn things up sunday and really hand it to them.
I just checked the schedule.....the Jets are playing 8 games at home this year and 8 on the road...so we're ok
Good one Johnny! Seriously though, if we have to open on the road, no better place that Miami. There are alot of jets fan down there at those games. I know it's the season opener and all, but you'll still see a significant amount of green and white!
Yep the NYMs had written into the contract between the city & the NYJs the NYJs could not open at home until the NYMs season was over which meant from the onset of our lease at Shea until we left after the 83 season we were not allowed to open at home. We could not even play an exhibition game at Shea for the exact same reason I mentioned above. A better stat would be what was it at the M/lands?
I hate historical stats like these. Each year we field a completely different team and face other completely different teams. It's all chance.
Fascinating fact about the Shea deal. Learn something new everyday. The meadowlands week 1 record is: 2-5 That fact finding was annoying, because since they moved to Jets/Giants Stadium, they never play home on week 1... its actually a good thing. They had 6 consecutive seasons on the road. I would imagine since the Giants were majority owners they'd have the decision to play home 1st. The Jets aren't that good on week 1 anyway.
It just wasn't the early 80's. The Jets had a home opener in 64 when the Jets moved to Shea vs the Broncos. The Jets had to wait for 14 years (78) for another home opener against....guess who? the Fins.....Jets won 33-20. So the Mets did cause the Jets to miss many Home openers at Shea and had multiple first 2 games away thru the 60's, 70's and early 80's. Also, the US Open didn't help the Jet's cause either. Can't blame the Mets now, blame the Giants , cause we share a staduim or the NFL.
