Hey guys, since there have been 1,000,000 posts about coaches lately, I wanted to make one about the players. This was a much improved unit from 2007 and I wanted to discuss who was the biggest standout of the group. My pick Alan Faneca, he brought much needed run blocking skills which allowed Thomas Jones to be a beast that he is.
Good thread, i think damien woody was the big key, they ran behind him all the time, and he really made brandon moore a much better player.
Damien Woody had some pretty good false starts down the stretch. Plus, just the name "Woody" makes me want to punch him in his fat face.
A real examination of FortyMillionDollar Faneca's performance vs. a OneeHundredK Kendall would reveal just how badly Tannenbaum deserves to be fired. Bad value.
Faneca was a nice pickup, and the Jets had to do something to fill that gaping hole. But in terms of the OL's MVP, it was Mangold. I would say by far.
I've said this all along, i think Bricks a bust. When you look at where we drafted him, he should be Orlando Pace like. He is not even close. Even with the addition of Callahan, who i like, i haven't seen much improvement. He can't pass block.
what? being a starter from day one and being an ABOVE AVERAGE lt does not qualify you as a bust, not living up to number 4? maybe but a bust? not a chance He could pass block from day one, hes one of the best in the league at it, he just cant run block very well
I think most understand that he starts, and that means among other things he does not suck. But he's not all that great, either, and does not justify where he went in the draft. It's pretty clear most here who call him a bust are talking about that.
Biggest standout I'd say Faneca. Mostly because in comparison to who we had last year, he automatically made our line much better. But with regards to who was more consistent, I would split my vote for Mangold and Brandon Moore. Those guys were awesome.
He can't pass block? Have you watched him play? edit: To answer the original question I thought Faneca and Woody both struggled in pass protection but were very good in run blocking. D'Brick again struggled with run blocking but improved over prior years and was very good in pass protection. Mangold and Moore were solid in both areas but neither were dominant. It's hard to pick one out as the biggest contributor. They all had there strengths/weaknesses. If I had to choose one, I'd say Mangold or Moore.
I hate that Brandon Moore's season goes unnoticed. I thought he had a very consistent season. I thought he was stout in the running game, and outside of the Raider game I don't really remember him missing a block that caused a sack.
Either Brick or Mangold. Mangold was more consistent and better all around...but Brick was a dominant pass blocker and anyone who calls him a bust is a downright idiot.
He's a bust because he's not playing as good as Orlando Pace? Pace was one of the most dominant linemen to ever play the game and is pretty much a lock for the hall of fame. You don't think your expectations are a little unfair? Anyway, Mangold was easily our best lineman this season, Faneca, Brick and Woody played well but Mangold was the most complete player on the line.
Decent offensive linemen (which Ferguson is) become better with age and experience. They got bigger, smarter and nastier as the endure their time in the trenches. I expect a Pro Bowl season for Fergie next year.
Bill Callohan/Nick Mangold tied. Everyone forgets about Moore, though he is reportedly the best run blocker on the line. D'Brick needs to gain weight, which happens with age, so he really can only get better, and he is pretty damned good as is (amazing with pass blocking and screens, only subpar on run blocking). Woody was a great surprise and Faneca actually wasn't as good as everyone makes him out to be. He is regressing with age. He's still good, without a doubt, but people overrate his tangible contributions. The experience he brings, though? Priceless.
I fully agree with this assessment of B. Moore--in fact, at times he looked great! He may not be "better" than NM, but in terms of surprise value, he's the one. Perhaps playing between Woody and NM made his job easier but still, I really like him at RG.
Moore had a couple of penalties, I think. This controversy about Ferguson is really semantic. Define bust. I don't think he's played up to the level he went in the draft.
Faneca IMO with Woody a close second. Brett had all day to throw, just made horrible horrible decisions.
