With the great play from Wilkerson, Richardson, Ellis and also D. Harrison I'd be interested to hear how you guys view the future of Couples. Can he really become a star / impact player as a 3-4 LB or will he never fulfill his potential and essentially rotate with the other linemen. In case he does not develop into a stud 3-4 LB should/can he be moved to recoup some of his remaining value and free up space to dedicate to other positions on defense (e.g. OLB, S)? Would he have some significant value? Personally, Im not really a believer in him becoming a great 3-4 OLB and don't see a long-term spot on the team for him playing the other line positions - also his effort seems questionable at times... Let me know what you guys think
I think he might win the Masters this season. Joke. I'm hopeful he can be the outside pass rusher that the team needs. But I don't think that's his strength.
He doesn't play with that swag or intensity that the rest of the line plays with... He is the odd man out in that front 7.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if Coples had a break out year. He made good progress last year playing a new position and was often a disruptive force behind the line of scrimmage. Most of the attention of opposing offenses will go to Wilkerson and Richardson which will make opportunities for Coples.
Will he work hard enough to take advantage of those opportunities? It doesn't seem like his work ethic is up there with Richardson/Wilkerson/Harrison... They all want to be great, while Quinton seems satisfied with mediocrity.
You could watch him in interviews and watch him on the sideline... His demeanor isn't the same as the others... Wilkerson and Richardson talk about being great all the time... Haven't heard Coples say shit like that. I know thats not the end all be all, but just an ovbservation.
Coples has a nose for the football. Solid Outside linebacker, maybe an even better DE. In his first season he was in the backfield a lot. He probably is better off in a 4-3 defense. Coples made that huge tackle that pretty much sealed the game against New Orleans, he didn't bite on the fake, followed through on his assignment.
Just doesn't seem as hungry as the others to me... I hope I am wrong though and he has an amazing year.. I am deff rooting for him.
If he can stay 100% healthy I see him as a 10 sack guy easy especially with our interior linemen. He came on really strong the last half of the season and if Pace can get 10 sacks there's no excuse for Coples not to be able to get 10. He just has to stay healthy and keep grinding.
Coples floor will be bryan thomas like. Solid but not spectacular. Although I expect to see a big year from him after what I saw the 2nd half of last year. He was in tge backfield often and will be there quicker as he gets more comfortable in the position
Coples played well in the preseason before he got hurt. Then coming back from injury plus having to learn a new position slowed him down a bit. But he bounced back nicely in the 2nd half of the season. I expect him to play much better next season and take a step up.
Does anyone think he moves very awkwardly?? His movements aren't fluid at all, and I think if he could work on this, it would make him much better.
I don't see how you can judge his motivation and/or drive by his sideline demeanor or interviews. Frankly, it sounds fucking stupid.
one thing we know is that Coples is a fairly versatile athlete, and Ryan is quite adept at using versatility in his front 7. add in the quality guys around him, and i think playing in this defense is his best opportunity to succeed as a pro. How exactly the Jets line him up will probably change a little from game to game. Early last season, Coples was lining up inside in the Nickel, and Richardson came out. That is also when Barnes was still healthy, and coming in at DE on those formations. It's quite possible we could see Wilk-Coples-Richardson-Barnes this year on Nickel. I also saw Coples lined up at End as the season went on last year in the Nickel. Sometimes standing up, sometimes hand in the dirt. So I'd expect him to play OLB in the 3-4, and used in a variety of ways in the Nickel, Dime and other subpackages. We play a 3-4 maybe 50% of the time. Hopefully he can continue to grow a 3-4 OLB. I already have confidence in him as a pass rusher and contributor in the other fronts.
we dont run a straight 3-4 anymore.. coples does not play 3-4 olb.. he puts his hand in the dirt and rushes from the end on everydown..he is fine in his role.. i dont understand why people hate on him he hits the qb on almost every play
I think this is his year to show us what he's got. He's had 2 years to get adjusted and now he has his own position in this defense. Either he gets it, or he gets out.
