He's been described as a Bellichek clone, a genius with 'X's and 'O's who puts smart players in positions to make plays and not make mistakes.

How does a great defensive minded coach in his first and only stint as a defensive coordinator explain the Patriots defense under Mangini.

Good coaches don't see their defensive units ranked 27th in defensive penalties committed. Good coaches game plan to put their players in positions to make plays. The Patriots ranked 31st in total defensive takeaways under Mangini last season. Only the awful Houston Texan defense had a worse record.

His other accomplishments are just as bad to mediocre, the Patriots ranking 26th in total defense, 31st in pass defense with run defense (ranked 8th) the only category being marginally acceptable.

I can understand why he was hired (friend of Mike), I don't understand the hype about his being a a great coach or a teacher.

    Please explain

Several key Patriot defenders were injured last season.

Parcells couldn't coach the 1999 Jets to a winning record.

Fox couldn't get the Panthers over .500 when the team was hit with injuries in 2004.

I don't understand people calling Herm a good coach, either.

The Pats D was just decimated with injuries. In fact, nothing on that team was going real well until the 2nd half of the season.

How many times have the Pats beat the Jets consecutively? 6 or 7 times? You'll still call Herm a good coach though.

The Pats were taking people from the stands to play in their secondary. they were very beat up on D. If you look at the total picture, they did what they had to do. They were still a solid D and i would expect the same under Mangini now in NY.
The Jets D will be a focused group who will play smart and get to where they need to be to make plays. Mangini will be able to lead a solid group on D. It's the O that i am worried about

The worst of the offseason is among us. The darksiders have run out material, so they revert back to February.

Put on your hard hats, it might get ugly (or boring, whatever).

Whoa. Good point. I'm a Herm hater personally, so that makes a lot of sense to me.

Everyone knows it takes years to build a team, so that's no surprise that Herm made it to the playoffs using Parcells team. All he had to do is just play the players that Parcells put on the field and he was going to win.

So your point is since they were Parcells players thats the only reason they made the playoffs. What about Marvin Lewis he took those "horrible" bengals and made them great.
It works both ways just because u have great players doesnt mean u have a great team Herm used what he had and it worked and was sucessful.

Don't know much about football, huh?
Stopping the run and forcing teams to pass will get you wins all day long.
They won the division easily and stomped Jacksonville in the first round, no mention of that?
I hate the Patriots but you can't deny their success of getting "it" done.
We can win with an average to above average secondary...just stop the run!
Stop looking at stats and watch some videotape.

Wow great intelligence. The first thing any real football people do is go by team stats to make judgements.
