Should they get another fa or two now?
Wait until after the draft then go after someone in budget?
Extend a few contracts of players on the rosters?

Re-sign Mangold and Leon before you do anything. The problem with re-signing Leon is Sproles didn't hit the open market and set a price tag on what he's going to cost. But I trust Tanny to get it done.

I'm with you. Lock up Mangold and Leon for the rest of their lives.

I swear some people just don't use common sense any more. There have already been threads with these same ideas in them. Mangold has 2 years left and is not costing us much at all. Why are we going to deal with his contract right now? It doesn't make any sense from a business stand point.

So can we please stop with the resign mangold threads until after 2010. Thanks

Have you ever taken an economics course? Did they ever explain things like marginal utility and the time value of money to you? Or expected value? It is in Mangold's interest to sign a long term deal which increases his salary over the next two years at the expense of being paid less than market value over the years beyond the next two years. Economics isn't very useful, after 2-3 courses you've learned everything you need to know, but those 2-3 courses help a lot.

The Jets have made it clear they want to re-sign both of them before the '10 season begins. So while Mangold may have another year after that the Jets aren't stupid enough to want him to play out his contract and hit FA. Only a fool would do that with a high quality player. How many times have the Jets made that mistake with OL already? Randy Thomas and Kareem McKensie come to mind immediately. I am sure there are others too. In fact we only have Mangold because we let Mawae walk to begin with.

Besides, they don't have 14 mil, they have 11.7.

Nope, getting my degree in criminal justice did not require an economics course. Of course it's In
mangolds interest. However, it is not in the jets interest to use cap space on some one this year whom is still under contract for 2 years and by then there may not even be a cap. The money this year will be spent where it's needed now.

See how simple that is? Even without an economics course. Don't worry mangold is not going anywhere.

Actually, with deflation and inflation a huge economic debate, it's a matter of opinion as to where the relative dollar value will be. I'd go out and get me a QB and a legit WR now.

Just out of curiosity, a QB and WR from free agency or do you mean the draft? Because there are no legit WR's in free agency, but I would not mind at all if byron leftwich was on our roster.

you resign them now while the market value is what its at, cause at this point its only going up. their contracts if resigned now, would be FAR cheaper if we were to attempt to retain them down the line.

plain and simple. hell its not even clear if their will be a salary cap next year. further striking home my point.

This is the best Idea. We have several very good young players that are goign to need new contracts very soon.

Put it in a fund to buy up unsold seats in 2010 so the home games aren't blacked out.

I'm voting for using it for "likely to be earned" bonuses and getting it back as extra room next year. If there's a cap then.

actually...based on the time value of money it is in the jets interest to sign mangold now....assuming average salary rises which it typically does the jets will sign mangold now during an economic downturn therefore paying him less over the long term of his contract...

on a short term basis the jets should not sign him now however looking long term is it definitly in the jets best interest....

Exactly....And as a Rays fan, thats how I was feeling with Crawford and Kazmir...We had to get those guys locked up and with Mangold and Leon...I feel the same way, these guys can be threats for opposing D's for years to come. Why look for something that we already have? We already have one of the best young centers in the game and a RB who can explode for a huge gain in many of ways.

Lets get these guys locked up long term because I would hate to see Mangold in a Patriots jersey with Leon as another freaking Redskin due to free agency and thats what happens when a franchise takes way to long to lock up a player long term...They then become players of opposing teams.
