We are all bashing Pennington and believe me Im not very happy about him but.. the O-line had a bad game and I hope everyone realizes that Pennington is coming off two shoulder surgeries ph and also the Jets have no go to back! We need a running back. We did fine I gues statistically with 134 yds. but its not a constant. The bills werent concerned with the run and they have a good secondary as it is. When your o-line is and QB are having trouble it sure must be nice to be able to hand it off to a back who at any moment (ala McGahee did against us) can break a big play and change momentum. Please we need to draft a back, Kenny Irons, Marshawn Lynch let's just have somebody we can go to and no more of RB by commitee. Keep Housont and Washington. Leon is explosive out of the backfield on a pass and Cedric wil get those tough yards, But we know neither will take a handoff and break 4 tackles and go 70 yards AND make people respect the great play action of Pennington.
Bottom line: People who are saying Clemens should start have no idea at all about the game of football. Its ignorant, dumb, and just plain insane. Chad Pennington on his most average day, is better than Kellen Clemens will EVER be. Get a grip.
Wow, that's quite a prediction to make about a guy who has taken fewer than 10 snaps in his entire NFL career, all in garbage time. If what you say is true, then the Jets need to draft a QB this year for sure, since Pennington on his most average day is exceedingly average indeed.
Don't get me wrong here, I am not sayin Pennington is great, but he was a 1st round talent. Do people on here really think Clemens (2nd Rd) is the answer? He seems pedestrian to me just by watching him in college/at practice.
That guy throws that brown thing that looks like a big terd and the other people try to get it..... Ok I'm completely lost at this point.
Point is noone knows if Clemens is the answer, but it is becoming quite clear that Pennington isn't. So if Clemens is not the answer we better find someone who is..One thing is for sure is we cannot judge Clemens by what he accomplishes in mop up duty, do you know how many people in SD wanted to run Rivers out of town because of his mop up performances.
I dont understand how Penny goes from "oh hes good enough to win with" or "oh hes not great but hes a winner" or "oh he gets the job done" to now hes not the answer. Its frightening how much people base their threads off of one game
If you think it is one game, you haven't been paying attention to this season. Do you think he is having a good year??
Please feel free to go back to the many threads over the past few months that have discussed this. In fact, Pennington has had a wildly inconsistent year, with many lousy games (Jacksonville, Cleveland, Chicago, Buffalo), some mediocre ones (New England, Green Bay - yes, Green Bay, since while his first half was about perfect, his second half was pretty poor), and the rest good ones. There are those among us who think that while that might be good enough on a team like the Bears or the Super Bowl Bucs and Ravens, with overpowering defenses, it's not going to cut it with these Jets, and the team needs to move on after this year.
Bawden, I agree with your post. Our biggest problem is RB, well, if you just ignore our total mess at CB. But RB makes a bigger impact on our success. I don't even want Leon or Cedric on the team next year, much less in a RBBC. Neither one, along with Barlow and Blaylock are NFL starting caliber players. Every one of them is a role-player. All of the best offenses have big-time RBs. San Diego has LT. New Orleans has Deuce and Reggie. Addai is doing well in Indy. The Dillon/Maroney combo is working for NE. Fred Taylor is pushing along in the Jacksonville offense. Rudi Johnson, Julius Jones, the list goes on and on. But instead, people will continue to point at Chad as if he is the sole source of mediocrity on this team. Never mind that our 1460 yards of rushing offense is only a couple dozen more than the individual stats for guys like Larry Johnson and LT. But people want to practically worship Cedric Houston, or Leon Washington. The point about the line is good too. There was no protection. That has a lot to do with the outcome, but it is only exascerbated by the anemic run offense. Don't get me wrong, I was calling for Chad to get yanked by the third quarter on Sunday, but to pin it all on him, as people seem to every week, while giving people like Leon Washington, Cedric Houston, and Mike Nugent a free pass week after week is getting very tiring.
thats pretty ignorant. labeling a player non-productive before he plays. it seems to me your have a soft spot for penny and cant analyze his pro cons on a legit level. and you make Penny sound like a pro bowl qb. gimme a break.
Leon has actually been a bright spot on this Jets team. And you don't want him on the team next season as a change of pace back? That's pretty much what i'm looking for in a 3rd down back, speed, can get around the corner and on screens, has the ability to bust it for at least 20 yards with his agility... Obviously the Jets need a feature back, and Leon should be the guy who spells the starter for about 5-7 carries a game.
I want a franchise RB as well, but I don't see why you wouldn't want to keep Leon as a situational/3rd down back and Houston as a backup.
Houston and Washington have the two qualities that we need in one back, and I think we will get that back, but I don't know that's the first need pick in a draft. Just my opinion that I've had for a few months and stand by it, we should take a top-shelf defensive end in the first round. The kind of game-changing talent at DE that is very seldom found outside of the first round. But I wouldn't mind seeing a RB with that Redskin pick in rd.2.
Everyone is happy to keep around Cedric and Leon along with a marquee RB? WTF??? Three roster spots for ONE position? Seriously? Give me a marquee running back, and a full back who can pound it through on a 4th and 1 and can block. I cannot understand how you people are so willing to keep the band-aid on the RB position, but want to string up Chad who has been mediocre in LARGE PART thanks to our RUNNING GAME, or lack thereof. What's with the comment about Leon hitting the corner and turning one for 20? Seriously? I mean, really, are you serious? Leon has A run of 23 yards. That says he has potential? I say the multiple times he's put the ball on the ground this year are proof enough of the potential for turnovers. Don't get me wrong people. Chad is not the long term answer here, but this RBBC bull---- is tiring now. Neither Houston nor Washington is ever going to rush for 1000. In turn, as long as they are our "weapons" opposing defenses will continue to play the pass and pick off Chad. At the same time, if you think Clemens would do any better in this same situation, you must be crazy.
There are always gonna be 3 rbs on the roster.. I completely agree that our biggest need is a marquee RB but Leon is a definete keeper in the Meggett role & it might as well be Houston as the third RB..
There is no question that the biggest problem on this team is the QB position. We have only 13 passing TD's on the season in 13 games played...that isn't enough production. Pennington does not cut it week in and week out...down to down. He doesn't have the same accuracy he had and his arm is weak. We didn't attempt one deep pass the entire game against buffalo when we were losing almost the entire game. I don't think it was because Brian was scared to call a deep pass, but because he knew Penny isn't very effective throwing it deep.
