I have followed his career as I am a South Carolina alum

Physically he has everything you want, some elite tools even. There's been a lack of focus though with Kinlaw. Even at South Carolina it took him awhile to get his head on straight. He was new to football really, I think he was homeless and stuff growing up so he's obviously not one of these kids that was groomed for the league his whole life.

It sounds like that lack of focus/professionalism followed him to the 49ers, he was injured, probably not eating right or taking care of his body. They say he improved last year in this regard and he was healthy all year.

if his head is on straight now as it appears, the Jets are getting a young versatile DL with some elite physical tools. And given the challenges he's endured, you root for a guy like him. I like this signing the most so far

Not that it’s ever bad to add depth and such if it’s a reasonable contract.

But Douglas and Saleh have made it their mission to add defensive linemen at all costs every offseason seemingly before anything else during the beginning of free agency and then during the lull period a couple weeks from now.

Weren't Jefferson's numbers better? Maybe Jefferson wanted too much money or maybe he didn't want to come back and deal with the Jets' dysfunction again, but I'm surprised that they didn't bring him back.

Who do you see backing up Q? JFM? Solomon? Kinlaw?

It totally figures that JD would sign two DTs before he signed an OT or a WR. SMH Maybe it was just a matter of he knew they would be cheap and would get grabbed early. Hopefully, he's already been in contact with the agent for several of the OTs and is just waiting on word from them.

At this point, I'm guessing Kinlaw slides into Jefferson's role and Fotu will take over Al Woods' run-stuffer role.

Have they re-signed Solly yet? Hopefully they do because he's a good locker room guy and good depth at DT who already knows the system. Can't imagine he'd be more than 1-2M.

I get that it's how FA works - you grab who you can that can help you in some way, and that process isn't usually linear or sequential however you want to frame it. You might have the greatest need at T but only be able to sign someone that plays a position of lesser need sooner. Understood.

That said, signing these "lesser" needs players reduces your cap space and your ability pay for the higher/highest need players. That's a real concern. Given what we've been through with the failures of the OL, Douglas should've been hyper-focused on obtaining a Tackle (or 2) before anything else. I realize that's unrealistic, but it's how I feel (and I think how many fans feel). In the end, Douglas had better come out of this offseason with a totally revamped and upgraded, healthy, OL or he should be fired.

look…OT is our biggest need, followed pretty closely by WR…yes we need DT as we had a bunch of one year deal type guys, I get it…but the fact that we’ve signed a few guys and NONE are an OT or a WR is a bit frustrating and the frustration is warranted until we actually make a move to improve our two weakest areas. I find it difficult to believe that we will rely on the draft to fill both of those needs.

Criticism is valid until proven otherwise…

    FA is about plugging holes

When you reach for stars you can end up with Leveon Bells, and Trumaine Johnson's

We need another good draft and for our current guys to continue to develop

Agreed. Aside from trading for Rogers, he has done next to nothing in any of the free agencies over which he's presided. I worry now, because despite the fact that he has had almost no success in free agency and even now with the win or else ultimatum this year, he's STILL being stingy. Now, I don't know if there's a good market for offensive linemen and he's just ignoring potential game changers and going bargain basement shopping, or if he's grabbing the best people he can from what's available. But once again, the free agent market is booming and the Jets aren't making a single wave.

No, free agency is about building the team. Same deal with the draft. If there are stars that are available for a price that you can reasonably afford, by God, you sign them! You also sign lesser-known players to fill holes.

You can also end up with Brandon Scherff’s and Trey Hendrickson’s and Joe Thuney’s. We unfortunately end up with the guys you named though.

    1 year
    $7.25 million
    $6.91 million guaranteed

    That is atrocious.

Seriously. We could have saved these 7 mil, paid almost half of Huff's contract, and moved JFM inside.

Agreed. That's sheer lunacy! They could have gotten Jefferson again for 1/3 - 1/2 that much.

They must be pretty damn confident they can get him to play at a high level. Honestly I don't completely doubt it, but still seems like a lot of money. Very curious to see him play in Ulbrich's defense
