There was a lot of talk about being less aggressive on defense in the 3rd quarter and allowing them to score on us. After watching the replay today I thought it seemed like we blitzed more often in the 3rd quarter. I went back and took a closer look noting the number of pass rushers every time they passed. Code: 1st Quarter 4 5 5 3 3 4 5 3 4 9 passes sent 3 - 3x (33%) sent 4 - 3x (33%) sent 5 - 3x (33%) 2nd Quarter 2 5 2 4 4 5 3 5 3 9 passes sent 2 - 2x (22%) sent 3 - 2x (22%) sent 4 - 2x (22%) sent 5 - 3x (33%) 3rd Quarter 3 5 5 5 3 4 5 4 3 5 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 3 5 4 6 7 6 23 passes sent 3 - 4x (17%) sent 4 - 10x (43%) sent 5 - 6x (26%) sent 6 - 2x (9%) sent 7 - 1x (4%) 4th Quarter 4 5 4 5 7 7 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 22 passes sent 3 - 16x (73%) sent 4 - 2x (9%) sent 5 - 2x (9%) sent 7 - 2x (9%) both on the goal line We were actually most aggressive in sending extra rushers in the 3rd quarter. Arizona did a good job picking up the blitzes we sent and Warner is very good at hitting open receivers quickly when blitzed.
So they adjusted incorrectly? interesting to see when the # of blitzers sent was even, the play was consistent. When it was lopsided, they scored a lot. Plus, Warner did go no huddle. ....hmmmm.... fuck it. FIRE SUTTON
I don't know if it was incorrect or not. If I were running a team that was up 34 at halftime I'd probably plan on blitzing a lot in the second half figuring they would be passing a lot. Warner took advantage. The no huddle probably fucked us up too. That obviously kept us from changing up personnel.
yeah, we can't blame all that scoring on prevent defense. their guys/coaches just outplayed ours in the 3rd quarter. big time. thank god there's the 2nd and 4th quarter.
sounds like a good game plan. probably just came down to execution and the no-huddle didnt help im sure
I have found that teams would be better off to not blitz them very much. Blitz too often and Warner's throwin' TDs to Fitzgerald and Boldin. I posted this prior to the game-
I said similar things before the game. It seemed like the more guys we sent the worse we got burnt. I can't blame them for sending the heat being up so much in the 3rd though.
It seemed to me that we sent the same blitz packages in the early 3rd Q as we did in the 1st half. And the Cards had it figured out after the half, picked up the blitzers (at least twice Kerry Rhodes through the middle) and found the hole in the coverage... I don't care if you sacked the opposing Qb every play in the 1st half, if you come out and give the same look in the 2nd half against even a decent coach, you're gonna get beat. Simple as that....
Did we send any safety blitzes in the first half? I don't remember seeing any, but I know we did in the 3rd quarter. I can think of one specific safety blitz in the 3rd where we got burnt for a 25+ yard gain. I can check tonight on the first half.
Excellent job BB-thanks, man. I loved the way that 2-man rush in the 2q caused Warner to poop his pants. That is, doing the unexpected causes mistakes with at least as much frequency as blitzing. I have to conclude that we did little unexpected in the 3rd quarter and in fact, were entirely predictable to the Rams OC.
Looking at those numbers, it seems like the complete first half was scripted. Which seems a lot to me. Usually you would script your first 20 plays, or first quater and then start adjusting on what you saw.
I've heard of teams doing that (scripting) on the offensive side, but never defensively. Do teams to that?
not as strict as on O because you gotta adjust to some things like down and distance and Offensive set. But especially things like blitzes in a 34 are good to script and you see how the Offense handles it and then develope a plan for the rest of the game. You think those even numbers in the first half are by accident?
I have no idea. I wasn't implying that you were wrong, I had just never heard of that so that's why I asked.
I brought this up in the fire Sutton thread, good work again Broadway. We started to get conservative in the 4th QTR after we scored the TD to stop the bleeding. Most people were complaining about Sutton getting conservative the whole 2nd half as the reason he should be fired. I think Beaman brought up the most valid concern in terms of Bob Sutton as DC. The problem isn't Sutton getting conservative it is the apparent inablity to adjust in game.
I never coached a NFL team, so i´m also not 100%, but i always belived that they would script them on D, as they do on O. I can´t think of a reason not to do it, but I can see a lot of benifit doing it. If you´re a DC and they hand you a chart at Halftime or after the first quater, which lists the # of rushers, which coverage is played and what happend then (Sack, Hurry, Compeltion, time till throw, run for #,# yards and so on) it would be a lot easier to make the right adjustments. But you need a script to make those #s really tell you something.
I think that, unlike in the 1st half, when we let the turnovers come to us, we were actively looking for them in the 2nd half. We blitzed a lot, while our corners seemed to sit back, and then gamble for a pick on intermediate routes. I specifically remember revis doing this once. I think this mentality, along with the complacency that naturally sets in (although it shouldn't) allowed for them to score those 21 points. We were certainly trying to be aggressive, knowing they were going to come out passing, but we should have maybe mixed it up a bit more, in terms of the amount of rushers, as we had done in the 1st half.
