Ever since we drafted Sanchez , this is the one thing that has really niggled me, who the hell does Mark Sanchez go to for the finer points about being a QB in the NFL. Theres only so much a QBs coach can tell a player, sometimes its better to see a Vet in action to get more of a feel for the game. Anyway I came across this article and couldn't agree more.
as a glorified qb coach (think Garrett with the cowboys during the aikman days) sure, but not to play, Favre took months to get the playbook down, why would Garcia be able to handle it?
We're talking about as a back up here not replacing MS. ....and what can KC do other than just about hand the ball off? I would prefer someone with Garcia's smarts to come in and be a clipboard carrier.
Pennington would fit right in here. He knows Schotty's play calls and is an incredibly cerebral quarterback. He would be able to mentor Sanchez and, if need be, step in for a few snaps.
That would be a great acquisition and better than the Garcia one, except for his injury. As far as I know Garcia is kicking his heels in Philly...
Backup QB is not the issue. Garcia is no answer. There are so many other reason the jets might not make the playsoff.
Nah, we're good with Clemens. Garcia won't know the playbook and Sanchez will probably be playing anyway. If he isn't, Schotty needs to man up and give Clemens a chance to move the ball. No more of that sorry shit we saw this week. Hate to rain on this guy's parade, but Clemens didn't actually have any turnovers in that game and Sanchez has 20 on the season so far. Kind of a double standard there, no?
I think he was inferring that for the short time that KC was on the field , he didn't look at all composed that a veteran player should do. The perfect scenario would be form MS to keep on playing all the way through, but have someone like Garcia shadowing him whilst learning the playbook. Is Garcia someone who could adapt? yes I believe so, and for what he lacks in knowledge of the playbook , more than makes up with with maturity and leadership skills. With all the QBs we have on the team, talent is not an issue, Sanchez, Ainge, O'Connell and erm....Clemens , for me the issue is having a mentor on the team, which I think would benefit a workout junkie like MS. Seems that Revis feels that more experience is needed around Sanchez as well.
I think we go through the season with what we have, hell put ainge in fro a few games...... Sanchez/Rex are rookies and this is what we expected..... Now, when all is said and done, we need a seasoned/clever/smart veteren to start in the next training camp and stay on the season, I would not object to Chad, because of his sheer brilliance, and character, other candidates include these prototypes, I don't know that that they would actually be available, but..... ; Kerry Collins; Jake Dellome ; Kurt Warner; A.J. Feely; Matt Hassleback; Luke Mcown, maybe on a stretch Daunte Culpepper, or how much longer will the eagles keep Donovan.....(they {could?} be released). I know I'll take some flaming for this but I feel like someone seasoned with a moderately long history of success is better that a "crybaby"jeff garcia... saw enough of him in Tampa, he not on oteam to mentor/help, he's there for him......
It does not matter who we get and put back there, this offensive scheme in not QB friendly, it promotes high TO rates for the QB, and low protection schemes, we would need Frank Tarkenton, as he was the best scrambling QB to ever play the game, but since he is not available, no matter who we get it will not help.
I like Ainge as next year's backup, with the coaches doing the "mentoring" We are set for a long time with our QBs with 2 talented and serviceable guys in Ainge and O'Connell, and of course our Franchise in Sanchez.
the jets already have their quarterbacks in clemens and ainge.they know the jets system.if ryan sees that clemens cannot do the job.he will replace him with ainge.who in my estimation is the better q.b.
This is true. Unfortunately I don't think Pennington is very fond of the Jets to be honest. I think it would take some work to get him to come back.
backup QB's are inherently not as good as the starter. Kellen Clemens isn't as good as Sanchez. don't see any dire situation there. if the starter goes down 9 times out of 10 the team is screwed regardless, the only difference is that some backups just may do worse of a job than others, but in the end teams usually do poorly without their starter. in short, who cares.
I'd be all for signing Steve Young but I don't think that's what Revis meant. I'm sure a vet could give some pointers, but Cavanaugh has been in the league a long time and Clemens probably learned a thing or two from Favre and Pennington, which is pretty much what Rex said at the beginning of the year. It would be one thing to bring in a vet to teach Sanchez and another to have one brought in to be a solid backup. I just don't think it would make a lot of sense this late in the season.
We will live or die with Clemens/Ainge as our QB depth this season. Bringing in another QB (whether it's Garcia or somebody else) is futile. We're too far into the season....there's no way the proposed new QB will pick up enough of the playbook to be effective. You won't be getting the Bucs, Niners or Eagles version of Garcia....you will be getting the Browns/Lions version.
