ok i have tried to think this through after watching every game probably for the last 2 years and i will do my best to explain what i think... first we have to look at why we won last year... we won last year for a number of reasons... 1.momentum... after we won the first game last year it gave us a spark 2.clutch plays at the critical points of the games 3.the defense were making big plays... sacks ints 4.our blitz package was better 5.leon wash was making some clutch big plays in the running/pass game 6. our playcalling was at the best in my opinion that it could because nobody had a chance to study what we do 7. pete kendall was at guard and adrien clarke was not 8. a little luck ok so why we are losing this year is basically looking at the answers above and thinking the inverse of each one... in terms of the running game i do like thomas jones alot but for some reason he wont break a big run that will change the game for us... he has yet to score and i beleive even barlow and houston had like 6 tds combined at this time last year... dont get me wrong i like jones's production ... i just wish he would take over the game like we hoped!... i guess that is a little too much to ask with this line...
Okay man...we're losing because our schedule is much tougher, our defense is garbage, and we had a starting QB that was limiting our offense, so there was no chance for an "clutch" plays on offense. ...all of this Leon Washington is awesome crap needs to stop -- the guy's a good, tough, hard working player and he's done a hell of a job returning kicks this year, but he'll never be anything more than a 3rd down back. Anyone that thinks different hasn't watched any Jets games...he isn't big enough to carry the load and he's constantly tackled by the first person that touches him. Sure, he's a threat to take it all the way a lot of the time, but it's usually on a return, a swing pass, a screen pass, or a gadget handoff/toss play --usually he's tackled for a loss or a very short gain on these plays and it's hurting our offense, more than it's helping. He was picked in the 4th round, and I expect to get 4th round productivity out of him.
Much stronger later in the year. So far we have only played a couple of good teams. I don't believe in the strength of schedule myth. Every year things are going to change. Some teams will improve and others will decline. You won't know until it all plays out in the end.
Put batteries in your sarcasm meter please. SOS is a load of bullshit imo. Every year in the NFL teams inexplicably get better and vice versa. The teams are so damn close with the exception of a few that it is nearly impossible to predict how tough a schedule is or is not.
Not to mention that if suddenly you find yourself sucking something awful then your entire schedule including cream-puff teams suddenly play you like the Pats. :breakdance:
That's what i'm talking about, willis. So dont blame 1-7 on how all of a sudden the Jets' talent sucks compared to everyone else.
My top 3, with #1 being the major reason by far: 1) The coaching staff has been far less aggressive this season. They need to get there mojo back. 2) Pennington took a huge step backwards. 3) Inconsistent play on both sides of the line.
I don't buy the schedule thing. The only good team we played this year was the patriots and I guess the Giants too. Every other team has been pretty weak. The Bills twice, Miami, the Eagles, Baltimore, Cinncinati are all average to weak teams. I think so far you could argue our schedule was easier this year. I put it to this. The NFL is so tight nowadays that unless your the Patriots you have to do everything right to get a win. I mean other than the Patriot game I could go back to one or two plays in each of our losses that could have turned them into wins. It's just a matter of last year we made the plays and this year we aren't. Now I feel things have snowballed and the team is expecting to find a way to lose. Hopefully Clemens will give the team some hope.
The Eagles, Ravens, and Bengals are all better than we are -- I think those teams are better than their records.
No we don't. We haven't faced many good teams to this point and we are still 1-7. The difference between this yr and last yr, is when we faced bad teams, we WON the close games, now we lose the close games.
the season is a big mystery we could easily be 4-4. that would guarantee Chad as the starter. Losing these close games led to his benching and clemens coming in. If we can agree that the goal is to win the SB, then finding out what we have in KC is probably the answer, and probably would have been at 4-4 (though eric would have never put him in).
This team is losing for obvious reasons - the Jets get outplayed in the trenches on both sides of the ball in every game. The defense gets pushed all over the field, giving up 140 yards rushing a game in 6-7 yard clips and can't generate anything resembling a pass rush. The offensive line can't open up a hole or create a push to gain a yard when the Jets need it and the pass blocking is spotty. Add in that the Jets have been outcoached in every game and that spells 1-7.
Bingo! Competence in the NFL is measured by the play of the offensive and defensive lines. The trenches are where the big battles are won and lost. After those battles have been fought and won everybody else gets to decide how dominant a team can be. The Jet's offseason was the worst offseason I have seen them have in close to a decade. In the offseason before 2003 they got schooled by their own free agents and the Redskins, but they had enough mainstays left that even Chad's injury didn't dump them into the pits. This offseason they not only shot themselves in the foot repeatedly, they were still reloading and blowing toes off in training camp with things like the Kendall trade and no plan B. On top of that Mangini is doing the worst in-season coaching job since the Rich Kotite era.
Never did. I am on record as saying the Jets are 5 quality players away from being a very good team. That really is not much if you think about it. The dolphins for instance have almost no good young players. The Jets on the other hand have quite a bit, which gives me great hope for the future. I think the Jets are less talented at the important positions this team requires (ie, with Chad at QB, NT, OLB, LG, RG and RT). I also think this FO has done a great job bringing in young players from the last 2 drafts. There have been more young talented players brought in the last 2 years than I can remember in any 2 consecutive years by any Jets FO. They have done a great job restocking the shit that was left for them when they took over. I would have rather had this dreadful year last year. All rebuilding teams go through it. It so happened that inexplicably Chad played reasonably well and was able to win games in 06. This year he is shot and we have watched the repercussions of shoddy QB play that magnifies everything else that ails them. If we had a decent QB this team is 3-5 or 4-4. Edit: I really believe horrible QB play is the biggest reason so far the Jets are 1-7. It trumps poor coaching decisions, play calling and the other general malaises this team suffers.
