With the jets trading up twice and basically having a 2-round draft they hurt themselves. I doubt anyone will trade any picks to the jets for players since they know the jets are starved for 2007 picks now--even if the jets make a trade they will not get value because of their perceived need for picks. The pick of the ILB in round 2 also surprises me since they didn't move Vilma. Only thing I can think of is that they may Vilma to OLB since he is fast and didn't look like much in the 3-4. Anybody got a theory?

That would be cool with me...Use Hobson for depth, primarily. Vilma-Harris-Barton-Thomas sounds pretty lethal.

  4. This is the Parcells theory of running a 3-4 and loading up on versatile talent in the LB corp. We now have Big powerful run stuffers( Harris/Schlegal/Hobson), Speedy sideline/sideline coverage guys(Vilma/Barton) Special teamers(Kassel/Chatham) and Pass rushers (BT/ Bowens/Wadsworth).

This not only creates competition, but allows us to mix and match linebackers based on situation and opponent. Which is what a Bellichick-esque scheme is all about.

I fully agree, we have diversity and depth, we now have LBs to compete with the best 3-4s in the leauge

lets look at it all realistically. yes its good to have a solid set of lb's but how many are we really going to hold on our roster? the definites being thomas, vilma, barton, harris, hobson, bowens (thats 6). the most likelys are kassel and chatham (thats 2). on the bubble we have spencer and schlegal who hasnt been liked since coming to new york. 9 at most and i dont think anyones job is as defined as some have stated. vilma will stay inside with harris who will help him. barton will move back outside with thomas and its clear the outsides will be backed up by the others. theres too much worrying about vilma, he will be fine.

I highly doubt Vilma moves to OLB, though he may line up there a few times a game or something...

Harris will play next to Vilma, and Barton may be moved for either a pick or player.

Inside. Outside linebacker in the 3-4 is not for him. You keep him inside and Harris' stoutness against the run is a big help. I think they're going to look for some bodies later on to protect him.

the jets probably don't see anyone that like in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th round.

i don't think you can say we hurt ourselves yet because i think Harris and Revis will be very good players

    Thomas / Vilma - Barton / Hobson

if anyone is moving outside its Barton, Harris will be good depth and will compete to start

I doubt we move Vilma. I dont think anyone is moving, Harris will come in to get Vilma or Barton a rest. He will be doing that untill he will beat Barton for the Starting spot

Look at it this way, that guy we got from the Dolphins and David Harris will get the playing time that Kassel and Chatham got last year on defense, which is good enough for me........

My problem is that we traded so much for Harris, and he's not even going to play full time. Shouldn't someone who we sell most of the draft for be an instant impact, almost every down starter?

He is going to be our starter, Barton just became expendable

Last years scheme took arguably their best player (Vilma) and neutralized him, maybe he can make more big plays on the outside and turn into a Carl Banks type.

Vilma is not a 3-4 OLB. If you think he's too small for ILB, don't look now, because he will never cut it at OLB. This is the 3-4, people. Different player archetypes.

Barton is most likely the man in the hotseat. Hobson was solid last season but we're starting to get a little stacked at LB. Bowens and Wadsworth were signed to make Hobson sweat and give Bryan Thomas some breaks. Someone in this LB corps is going to have to go, and I don't see Hobson or Barton being happy as a backup and we just have so many expendable LBs at this point (Chatham, Spencer, Schlegel, Kassel), plus the new guys, (Bowens, Wadsworth, now Harris) and something has just got to give. My personal feeling is Barton but you never know.

Can someone explain to me why we are in such a hurry to get rid of a 29 years old 6-2 245lbs (ideal size for a 3-4 ILB) who had 100 tackles (that were not 5 to 10 yards downfield like Vilma's) and 4.5 sacks this past season?

well for one when the season starts he will be 30, i mean i dont think we should trade him but he is gonna start declining most nfl players dont play that far into there 30s so if we could get something out of a trade for him thats why he is on the block.

Now imo i think the fact of getting david harris gives us the possibility of moving vilma around where ever we want. Vilma is too small for an olb but. We can now move vilma into different spots on the field with not worrying about having to plug holes against the run.

Sorry but getting rid of Barton because he turns 30 sounds like you are reaching for a reason.
