One of the few positives I personally am taking out of this game, and I do mean few, is the vastly improved play of Vernon Gholston. I know it may not have shown on TV, but being there and having the opportunity to watch him over the course of the entire play, he had a phenomenal game and it is clear that he is improving immensely. They had him all over the field: DE, DT, and OLB. He took on blocks and showed improvement in shedding those blocks. He was a nuisance in the pass rush, collapsing the pocket and coming this close to a sack on at least 3 occasions. In my opinion, he'll never put up big numbers. He'll always be the type of guy that, when watched on film, you'll always say "He did his job.". Just wanted to throw out a little silver lining amid all the threads of negativity.
Great point, I was thinking the exact same thing, he actually had a nice tackle early in the game too on a short pass to Lynch. I get what your saying when he may never be the elite pass rusher, but I think the fact that he has improved every week and was really close to 3 sacks this week does give hope. I think the jets need to play him more, even at 3-4 DE. I know he doesn't have the ideal weight, but he definitely has the strength.
so he's the next Bryan Thomas? the team doesn't need that right now. i began to hate him ever since he pulled up scared in a shorts and helmets drill and Westhoff ripped him a new asshole. He has every physical tool to be a menace. He lacks the will and desire and mean streak to be that. Its all mental with him, and thats what's so upsetting.
Don't shoot the messenger. I want him to be the next Demarcus Ware as much as the next guy, but going from being inactive to "serviceable" is a success in it of itself.
its a step in the right direction, but its frustrating. He's a vagina in a locker room full of dudes who wanna rip heads off - even though they are now injured.
From the looks of the defense, we could be in a lot of 4-3 sets and maybe he does a lot more. And the fact that he came close to 3 sacks today is pretty impressive on this defense considering we've had 1 in 3 games...
Yeah that one play where he didn't even turn around for the pass... it's been two weeks and he practiced all throughout the preseason, you'd think he'd be back to form already.
Hahaha when he finally gets one I'm going to freak out. When he came close today it was almost like arod hit another hr in OT. I just feel like once he gets one, he's going to turn into a sack machine.
This is so friggin' sad. We are so used to Gholston being totally invisible that the moment he does something he's supposed to do, like make a routine tackle, we point to it as a sign that he's turning a corner. The guy was the 6th overall pick in the draft, we drafted him to be a pass-rushing stud, and he doesn't even have 1 friggin sack in 18 games. So now we are celebrating that the guy "nearly had a sack 3 times."
I'm beginning to think that the steriods were the reason for his success. he's not good when off of them.
Definitely some positives. 1. Gholston is playing better but still nothing to really brag about but for him you have to mention it. 2. T.J. is still a very effective back. 210 rushing yards is beastly.
DING DING DING!!! We have a winner!! I could not have said it better myself. "OH LOOK!!! Vernon dressed himself! Drastic IMPROVEMENT!!" Give me a fucking break people...
told most folks on the boards a few weeks ago that we aren't out of the woods regarding our talent at the LB position...... of course no one agreed and so on...... for a ryan defense you need in order of importance..... LB - and versatile ones shutdown CB NT as of now we have 1 of the 3 so they will be busy in the offseason, again. jil
as far as VG..... its written in cement that he will not live up to the #6 pick standard for DE/LB.... that being said he is going to strap are cap a bit going forward, only giving us some depth and maybe a switch to 3-4 end and take up gaps rather than playing in space. nothing we can do. so we move on jil
