More reason to love the DE out of The Ohio State University. http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/profile.php?pyid=10412 and http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/01/bill_livingston_osus_gholston.html They are worth the read, trust me. You'll agree why he's worth the 6th pick.
I really hope that mangini realized that what this team needs are good player, not good guys. Enough with all that Mangini-guy bullshit
There needs to be a compromise... Gholston offers such a compromise.... A great talent, with a great attitude too... That being said, passing on every FA with 'character issues' and running veterans out of town because they have an attitude is foolish as hell.... You need players with attitude and ferocity on a football team sometimes... Not all these guys are going to be church-going A++ citizens... It's great to have character guys in there for leadership, but you need to compromise sometimes, and settle on a guy with a questionable attitude if he brings the right amount of talent to the table
see, I don't see it that way. A guy like Brian Cox, who most of us thought was "mental" and a thug BEFORE he came to the Jets, is on the coaching staff, for cripes sake. I don't care for this Mangini guy stuff either, but I think people on this board over-define it.
The skinny on Vernon Gholston 6' 3.7 258 lbs Will be in his second year as a starter in 2007 and a possible All-American candidate ... Ohio State's next standout at the "Leo" or drop end position like Will Smith and Mike Kudla before him ... was recruited as a linebacker and now puts those skills and speed to use when rushing the quarterback or dropping into coverage ... suffered a hand injury in the 2005 season opener against Miami (Ohio) and wound up being redshirted ... had a very impressive freshman year in which he played in six games ... took part in spring drills in 2006 and showed no lingering effects from the hand injury ... can play any of the four down lineman positions ... an excellent pass rusher with his combination of size and speed ... bench presses 455 pounds and is one of the strongest players on the team ... had an excellent spring and the coaches were right when they predicted he could be a major factor in 2006. A former linebacker, Gholston has quickly developed into one of the elite defensive line prospects in the country. Last season, his first as a full-time starter, Gholston earned Second Team Big Ten honors for posting 49 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. With offensive lines often dedicating an extra blocker toward slowing him, Gholston hasn't been as productive as a sackmaster in 2007, but has developed into a more reliable run defender.
Gholston is such a pansy. Did you see him cry after his latest loss? We don't need another Bryan Thomas dud.
Those 53 vaginas have reached the playoffs the same amount of times the Bengals have in the past decade in just 1 year so........
We need a player with some emotion because alot of our guys gave up TONS of leads(vs CIN, vs WSH, vs NYG) and some guys didnt play relentlessly.
This Mangini guy stuff is clearly overstated. Good luck fielding a 53 man football team completely devoid of assholes. However, I do think going for smart players that arent extremely trashy (see also: Bengals Defense, Pacman Jones) is a good call.
Agreed. Where did the term "Mangini Guy" even come from? Who comes up with this bullshit? Was it Cimini? There is just no proof whatsoever that Mangini and Tanenbaum will only go after good character guys.
It was a copy off of the prototypical Belichick type of player, and because Eric worked with Belichick, they thought he would follow the same kind of teaching. But by taking on Randy Moss and Donte Stallworth, we know the Belichick kind of player got tossed out of the window and they have looked great doing it too.
