Can we please stop all the talks about vernon davis. I mean he is a great player and all but right now he just isnt in the cards. There is a lot of other positions we need to fill up rather than te. I think its about time we stop talkin about him and how the jets "need" to get him

I haven't seen too much on him. Maybe you should stick around for more than 7 posts before complaining about a person's opinion on who we should draft.

I agree, we have greater needs than TE.

Every year we have people wanting to break the bank for a peripheral position when we have actual needs to fill. This year we have more needs than we can fill, and TE is a luxury pick for a team challenging for a trophy. (see - Patriots/Watson, Steelers/Miller)

Agreed, he would be nice but we are not at that level, at this point regarding TE we need someone who is gonna be a hell of a blocker, because our line is looking pretty rough and they will need all the help they can get

I think Kellen Winslow would have made a hell of an impact had he not decided to do wheelies on his bike. That's what you look to get in the draft is impact players. Being as we have so many needs and aren't close to a championship - why not draft the biggest impact player we can. I really don't believe there is a specific order in which you have to build a champion. Getting good pieces is still getting good pieces.

i dont think we should draft a TE at all...i really would like to see baker re-signed and even jolley given another chance
combined they had just under 600 yards(which is actually decent)...and if you take into account that we had no qb to get them the ball and were never ever in the redzone (where a good TE is most effective) they really cant be judged fairly
much more pressing needs on the first day

You can't really be serious about Jolley can you? We couldn't judge him fairly? I reserve the right to judge his stone hands ass when he dropped that gimme td in the end zone(I can't remember which game specifically - but I am sure I'm not the only one to remember it). Jolley sucked more than just the last year. I remember talking to Oakland fans that warned me about how the man only made a negative impact if at all.

Drafting is a crapshoot. If you knew upfront that Vernon could be as good as Gates/Gonzalez/Heap would you take him? If our FO sees that kind of potential in him and passes because he's a TE that's just plain foolish.

jolley played bad last year, but who didnt there is a reason we only won 4 games...especially among the wr corps...that whole group was dropping everything...coles/mccareins/chrebet/and jolley
and as for the bottom statement...couldnt u say the same things about d'brick/cutler/williams/any top draft pick
if the front office sees williams as the next julius peppers
cutler as the next joe montana
d'brick as the next walter jones
or davis as the next gates
    what do u go with?...the biggest need...O-line/QB

If we trade down a bit, I would love to get Vernon Davis, as I do believe he could be a great player down the road and give us a great impact player on offense. However, if Justice, White, or D'Angello are there, it'll be tough not to choose them. I have little faith in Jolley at this point, so I think whether or not we resign Baker would make this decision easier.

BTW, does anyone know how good Davis' blocking is supposed to be?

At least coles/mccareins/chrebet have had decent seasons in theirs past. We can hope for a return to form at least. Jolley has shown nothing over his career and definitely nothing to show a hope for improvement in the future either. If you see potential in him I can only hope for the sake of the franchise that you are right.

As for the second half of your argument(and most peoples arguement against Vernon Davis) - you see TE as a luxury position? How did that happen? How can a role be dictated by a position? Especially in this day and age of the NFL where matchups are exploited through superior talent being placed carefully in different positions. Whole offenses are predicated around creating mismatches through superior talent.

All the time I see Gates/Heap/Gonzalez lining out wide like a reciever. I see guys like Priest and Ladaianian lining up wide. HBacks like Cooley all over the field. I see the Patriots using their WR's interchangebly to create confusion. These guys are making a difference because they are playmamkers. Not because they are TE's or RB's or WR's. Fading from the NFL is the idea of set positions or roles. You find a guy with talent and you put him in a position to be successful.

All that I ask is that we not overlook a potential gamebreaker because he plays a position that in the past was considered a luxury. We must stay with the times and do what is best for the franchise. If our FO decides that another prospect can make a bigger impact for our team then so be it. But let it be because it is a better prospect - not a prospect who plays a "better" position.

Vernon Davis will be thethird best offensive plyer to come out of this draft. IMO right behind Bush and Leinert.

I think drafting a TE in the top is always a bad idea. I wouldn't be against drafting him out of the top ten though.

Interesting perspective, hadn't thought of it like that but the answer is still probably no, maybe Gates but definitely wouldn't take the other two #4 overall. My perspective is people are getting way too excited about this guys based on combine numbers.
