Got to practice about 9:30, and they were in shells but already doing some 11 on 11 work.... that is earlier than last week. If this practice (and yesterday's cancellation) are any indication, Mangini has let up on them.... and I think that's a good thing. Right now the emphasis looks to be more on executuing and teaching that the rather physical tone that was there the first week and a half. I said I'd be more objective about Chad this year, but I do have to say, he looked more confident and was throwing with more authority today than I've seen his since the first shoulder injury. I left TC feeling better about the guy who is now, clearly, no doubt about it, the Jets starting QB. Ramsey looks like #2, as Chad got almost every 1st team snap and Ramsey got all the 2nd team snaps. Ramsey still looks indecisive, holds the ball too long and even in 7 on 7's in shells, has happy feet. It's becoming clear to me why 2 HC's gave up on him.... and why he was only worth a sixth round pick. Brad Smith made another beautiful grab today, but Reggie Newhouse had what looked like a deep TD pass bounce off his chest. The entire crowd let out a "aaaawwwww". Dyson who looked good had a pick on a bad pass, but I could'nt see who threw it.... they were on the grass field the entire practice. Looks to me like Blaylock (who ripped off a nice 60 yard TD run down the far sideline) will get the most touches, but this looks like RBBC to me. Houston and Washington both got plenty of time with the first team offense too. It seemed to me like Strait was getting beaten like a drum all morning. For some reason, some players are wearing these "short jerseies" with red numbers on offense and gold numbers on defense.... the numbers don't match the program guide or their regular numbers. Makes it harder to identify some of them.... don't know what that's all about. At one point, Dreessen is standing next to Jolley, and they both have #88. More 2TE stuff today, and some new wrinkles.... using a H back and having Washigton in the slot. Some 4 wide stuff too, after motion. No sign of Pouha. What else.... Pennigton had to lead the 1st team offense on a lap after they messed up a motion play. Pennigton looked at Mangini, and he threw his index finger at him a couple times.... take a lap boys. Nugent appeared to hit about 8 FG's in a row from the 35 to 45 range, most dead center and distance to spare.... one might have just gone wide left, tough to tell from my angle. E Smith has been looking pretty good.
thanks for the report again. RBBC it is and im perfectly fine with it this yr. we need to just evaluate what we have at RB. althought I've been high on Washington since college. good to see hes getting his looks. Eric Smith is becoming a pleasant surprise it sounds like. At least I hear nothing but good about him, we'll see. oh well, I cant wait till fri.
Probably mixing up Jersey numbers and stuff to throw off scouts from the Pats and whoever else is trying to do a little preseason prep on the competition. I'd like to say thanks for the reports as well, Great job by all you guys (TBJ, Sect 227, Kurt, MM,...)
Miller has looked solid. Today he read a short sideline hook that he got his hands on, but didn't catch, or he was free to prance down the filed for a TD. He is IMO, much better suited to Mangini's scheme than Herm's cover 2. Good thing too, with Barrett having some sort of leg injury now too. Strait is the guy I'm worried about, not Miller.
Thanks T-Bird for taking the time to fill us in. Great news on Miller, I have high hopes for this kid.
Thanks for the great reporting. Its appreciated. Looks like the Defensive backfild is going to be this year's walking wounded unit. Too bad. Hopefully Mangini will be able to game plan to help out the secondary.

Boy, Mangini don't need no stinkin numbers to know who's who. I like the deception there. Probably done to keep the media off guard.
Great work, TBird. I wonder if Chad looks good because his shoulder FEELS good? Wouldn't that be sumthin'.
Thanks TBird. Sorry I couldn't make it this morning, bud. I really wanted to go, but couldn't. Hope you got my email from last night. I really wanted to watch Dreessen, among others, to see how he's progressing. Guess I'll have to wait until Friday night!
A sure sign of him "simulating" Becht would be if he falls down immediately after catching the pass
A bit more about this morning from Hutchinson's blog... Tuesday, August 08, 2006 Back to the island ... and practice Hempstead, N.Y. - Well, it was a great three days in New Jersey. The wife screamed at me and put me to work and my two young daughters showed me much love. It was back to the island early this morning - the traffic was a beast as usual. It?s not the distance, it?s the intensity of the ride. You can never relax. Coach Eric Mangini is having two-a-days for the next two days before the team departs for Tampa on Thursday for Friday?s preseason opener. The morning practice was rather uneventful as Chad Pennington worked with the first team. He did hit rookie WR Brad Smith on a beautiful 30-yard touchdown strike. Smith made a great leaping grab. Veteran free agent receiver Reggie Newhouse, who made several nice over-the-shoulder catches early in camp and was distancing himself from the pack, dropped another ball this morning. It kind of upset me because the opportunity to make the team is right there and he?s blowing it. Ryan Myers, a second-year free agent linebacker who made the team last season, is starting to stand out once again. I thought he played well in the mock scrimmage on Sunday and Mangini confirmed it during his morning news confernece. He also make a couple of plays in the morning practice. He realizes the odds against him but he?s fighter, which I really like. Butch Davis, the former Cleveland Browns and University of Miami coach, was at practice. Maybe he?s applying for a job. -Hutch
Thanks for the update on Miller. How is Jones looking at RT, and is Hobson making any progress at OLB?
