With Mangini picking Chad Pennington as his starting QB for the 06 campaign to a SB the Jets are no longer in rebuilding mode they are making a run this year. This team is better than the team that faced the Bolts in the 2004 Playoffs. Take a look at the rosters of both teams. Martin, Mawae, Fabini and Becht are gone. Abe was on the bench with nurse Rachet. Quincy Carter was awol. We had players like Reggie Tongue and Mark Brown starting on D. McCariens was our No. 1 WR now he is our No. 3. Fabini has been replaced with Ferguson and Mawae with Mangold. We are better and deeper at CB and WR and although Martin and Jordan were a great 1, 2 punch we have speed and versatility in the backfield. We have an easy schedule and I think the Dolphins are going to take a step back. The Pats are clearly the class of the division but they aren't dominating anymore on D. I hate Chad as a QB but he is competent and smart and in this league that is going to win you games. I encourage everyone to look at our roster and look at our roster from the 04 playoffs. This team can win. Can we win it all, not likely? But the playoffs are possible.
I hate to disagree with such an opptimistic post, but I don't see it. Not this year at least. But Pennington is our best option. I just don't see this team winning more than 6 games this year unfortunately
Well you could also say Chads "rebuilding" his career after his two torn rotator cuff injuries. Uhhh. Better? Well I sure can't wait to compare and contrast the 04 Playoffs when the Jets play in the divisionals this year then huh....
some good points but i think the thing is.. as of right now.. mangold is clearly not as good as mawae...kevin as HUGE part of our team and the running game when curtis was a top back in the NFL and i wouldnt say Washington/blaylock/barlow/houston is better than league leading martin our defense is probably better with an aged vilma but in many places were still inexprienced we have a whole new coaching staff too which should play a role in our not being as good as 04
Jumping jesus no. Not even close. First off something to back that up would be nice. Silly speculation is all it is.
I definitley think we can win this year. Naturally, most of our inner Jet's fan says we have no chance, but I know a bunch of other NFL fans that can sincerely tell me we have a chance.
Take a look at the 04 season our OL was awful against the Steelers and the Pats. We stayed in the Steeler game with our D which is much better now than it was when we played them. Washington gives us a legit threat out of the backfield as a pass catching third down back in the mold of Bruce Harper, something we didn't have back than and don't forget Smith who is going to be a beast.
I keep reading over your post and trying to determine where you are being sarcastic. Not the kind of post I would have expected from you Winston. I thought you more of a darksider, but maybe I was wrong. I think this team is in the 6-8 win possibility, 8 being hopeful. The schedule will help us. I can't label the Dolphins weaker at this point until I see how they come out the gate with Culpepper.
Cheers Biggs, I am happy to see someone with with a great reputation post something positive, I think that you are correct on everything but Martin, and I also like the two playmakers we have added to the offense, this will be a great season to watch just because of some of the new blood, I would not count us out yet, but I am still a bit pessimistic
The incompetent one is gone and the QB of our future is on the team. I think we have a better D than at any time during the last 5 years. The O is a work in progress but I don't think it will be as bad as we have seen. Good D's will stuff us we will score on decent teams and feast on weak teams. The NFL is a league of weak sisters and we aren't the weakest by a long shot. Good D and an oportunist O coupled with a big kicking game, you're in every game.
I don't disagree with your POV very often, winston, but I do about the change from rebuilding mode. There are many angles a team can take in rebuilding, and ours has gone heavy on the trenches on the offensive side of the ball. Installing a fundamentally sound offensive line quickly requires some sort of experience behind center. Especially if the center is one of the least experienced players. Starting Pennington assures them a cerebral field general to ease the transition on the line. But I don't think our FO/CS is fooling themselves either. They've seen how far Chad can carry a team; he has come through with surprising play in some tight spots, but he can only physically accomplish so much. Chad is auditioning for another team this year. I hate to admit it but I feel that way. I love the guy because he tears his beating heart out of his chest for the team, but I don't see a savvy young duo like Tannenbaum and Mangini hanging their long-term hopes on Chad. Or even their short-term hopes. They are brash in their actions and I think they are using him for mentorship while he uses them as a stage for a comeback... in a new uniform. Not to change the subject or anything. I just think that Mangini is an aggressive young coach and his personal goal for this year is probably to be the first ever rebuilding team to win a championship. And I like that mindset, as unrealistic as it sounds.
Every one is underestimating what has been done to our D. We have a superb back 8 and Ellis and Von What ever his name is are both perfect 3/4 ends. D Rob is going to be fine and to top it off our D now has Balls. This is a SB quality D in the making.
I totally agree on the defensive side of the ball, but as we saw in Baltimore and Tampa, your offense has to be relatively mistake-free for a defense to carry a team through the playoffs. We're not going to get that this year. We're going to get rookie mistakes, misreads due to lack of cohesion, position starters on both sides of the ball will change rapidly... we have too many chips against us. I think we're going to surprise many people around the league a few times, but in the end if you don't have an experienced, fluid unit, you can and will only go so far.
regardless of name...look at the point in their careers that these players were in... mark brown wasnt that bad....some may have said he was a temporary upgrade over hobson...its a shame he got the axe...Reggie Tongue was not a very good safety, so you get your point on that one... JMac was a much better receiver 2 years ago then he is today or was last year...every since 04...he hasnt showed anyone anything....Mawae was a stud, before he got hurt, and starting bitching about the jets( mangold is nearly as good yet)... also we are without Martin, and proven healthy chad...this was the pre incision era, when we didnt know the extent of chads injuries...he hasnt played much since, and noone knows what he can do...if he can bring the A game...then watch out, but until then... also our TE position isnt much to gloat about with Jolley and Baker not stepping up the plate...i dont know about you guys, i think we have a fighting chance, but i dont think this is as good as the 04 team
This team isn't better... It is younger and less experienced. We have no running game at all while in 04 we had one of the best running attacks in the NFL. The defense we had in 04 was lights out, it was very solid and the one we have now doesn't look bad but is still learning. It is also very unexperienced. I like the optimism, but I don't see us being better than 04.
I'd really like to see someone like Coles go the the Pro Bowl this year but way our offence is a wreak this year. I dunno about any Jet right now. I sure hope Chad and Coles get back their rhythem. of course that won't happen if we continue this horrendous offence we're running.
Do you think they'll throw downfield more during the season? They can't actually be that conservative can they?? The only player that has a shot at the Pro Bowl on this offense is probably D'Brick and that is unlikely in itself.
Well from what Iv'e seen our offence hasn't changed that much from last year. I'm not sure what to expect. It's gonna take a few weeks to find our nitch I think.
Surprising post to say the least Winston. Im just not sure if such a pitiful offense with 2/5's of the offensive line being rookies can give the team enough juice to win a 17-13 game. I will say this..this defense has a ton of potential...and I just wonder if after a couple weeks Mangini looked at his defensive coaches and realized that he step in to a little sh#$ with the leftovers on the roster. From the beginning, this defense did not have the sign "rebuilding" on it...and the new staff/front office seems to believe that because it seems about 70 % of the starters are returns from last year. Will the Jets become a team that is in every game...with the defense leading the way...and then falter from burnout from a hopeless offense? Will this team develop in to a great defense with an opportunistic offense and special teams and surprise...I guess you are counting on this scenerio. Hey...this wouldnt be the first time a team was looked at as crap before the first game was played..and surprised big time..and good defenses tend to overshadow major weaknesses. Hope you are correct.
