7th round pick... I don't know why we would go with him with Wright available.. but I guess we willl see
Strengths: An excellent athlete with good speed and quickness who moves well...Has a big, solid frame with long arms...Excels at clogging the middle of the line and stuffing the run...Does a good job of shedding blocks...Versatile...Smart player with good intangibles...Has lots of experience and was very durable...Still has some upside. Weaknesses: Provides very little in terms of a pass rush...Has an inconsistent motor...Probably needs to lose some weight...Tends to wear down and lacks stamina...Has to hit the weights...With his ability you would have expected some more productive. Notes: Was a top recruit coming out of high school...Saw some action at defensive end, defensive tackle and even tight end during his career...A prospect with some interesting physical tools to develop but you wonder if the light will ever come on
SUMMARY Adams was not an impact defensive tackle at Nebraska, but he did consistently disrupt inside runs and chase down ball carriers in pursuit. He is a good athlete with the foot quickness and playing speed to make plays in pursuit -- he has better range than most defensive tackles. He has very good natural strength and when he bends his knees, plays with leverage and is aggressive with hands, he can hold ground at the point of attack. He gets arm extension and can clog the middle on inside runs or shed and make tackles. He gets some pressure on the quarterback through athleticism and effort, but is not an explosive pass rusher and does not pressure the quarterback consistently. He is going to need a season or two as a backup to get in better shape and to develop better pass rush moves, but in time will become a starter. His size, natural strength and athleticism make him versatile enough to start at defensive tackle in a 4-3 defense or defensive end in a 3-4 defense. CRITICAL FACTORS Size Initial Quickness Play Strength Competes Play Speed Instincts 6.0 6.0 6.0 6.0 6.0 6.0 STRONG POINTS Adams is a quick-footed defensive tackle with the athleticism to make plays from sideline to sideline. He does a good job of getting off the ball quickly, reads the run away fast, accelerates to full speed and can chase down running backs in pursuit. He has the playing strength to stack the point of attack vs. the offensive lineman's run blocks, can shed and make the tackle. Despite not having any real pass rush moves, his quickness and agility help him to beat one-on-one pass blocks and he can get into backfield to pressure the quarterback. WEAKNESSES Adams does not consistently stay low and play with leverage which hinders his playing strength. When he plays high he can be driven off the ball by aggressive run blocks and can't get a push as a bull rusher. While he can out quick some offensive linemen to get pressure on the quarterback, if he does not develop pass rush moves he will struggle to get pressure on NFL quarterbacks. He has quick feet and gets off the ball quickly, but is not an explosive player and does not shoot through gaps to get into the backfield consistently. POSITIONAL FACTORS Grade Category Comments/Description 6.0 Read & React He usually reads and reacts to the play quickly, but when he plays up high, he does not react as consistently quick. 6.0 Initial Quickness He consistently gets off the ball quickly and flashes ability to disrupt plays in the backfield. 6.0 Play Strength He does not always play up to his natural strength, but when he plays with leverage, he plays strong at the point of attack. 5.5 Use of Hands He usually uses his hands well to jolt blockers and can control/defeat blocks, but has no real pass rush moves. 6.0 Shed Blocker He's not always consistent, but most of the time he gets his hands on the blocker and sheds him quickly. 6.0 Run at Him He does not always make the tackle, but even when he doesn't, he consistently clogs the middle and slows up runs. 6.0 Pursuit/Range He does a good job keeping offensive linemen on his back/shoulder, has good speed chasing the ball and makes plays in pursuit. 5.0 Tackling He does a good job when chasing after plays in pursuit, but gets up high and over-runs some sacks. 5.5 Closing Burst He has a decent closing burst chasing after the ball carrier in pursuit, but does not close consistently on quarterbacks. 5.5 Power Rush He has shown strength to jolt offensive linemen and drive them into the pocket, but does not shed and finish consistently. 5.5 Speed Rush He has good quickness off the ball to get on top of offensive linemen, but lacks explosion through the gap to consistently get into the backfield. 6.0 Errors He does not make any glaring mental errors, but needs to bend his knees and play with leverage more consistently. ATHLETIC ABILITY Section Grade: 6.0 Adams is a good athlete with the physical ability to make plays as a two-gap defensive tackle and as a gap shooter. His quick feet combined with his instincts/anticipation allow him to get off the ball and on top of the offensive linemen fast. His quickness enables him to get inside/under reach blocks, accelerate to full speed quickly and he has the play speed to chase plays down in pursuit. His agility, balance and quick feet help him to move through traffic and avoid contact well for a defensive tackle. He has the natural flexibility to bend his knees and play with leverage at the point of attack, but he does not do it consistently and is less effective when he plays up high. His coordination helps him to avoid contact on the move and he cann hop over low blocks/bodies without getting tripped up. Q.A.B. Quick Feet C.O.D. Flexibility Coordination 6.0 6.0 6.0 6.0 6.5 COMPETITIVENESS Section Grade: 6.0 He is a tough football player when it comes to fighting to stay on the field, but he does not consistently play with a tough, attacking attitude. Despite not always being productive, when it matters most, he has done a good job of attacking the offensive linemen aggressively with his hands, get into the backfield and make/disrupt plays consistently. The trouble is that his overall production is inconsistent and varies between very disruptive and barely adequate. When he bends his knees, plays with leverage and attacks the linemen with his hands, he can jolt, defeat and disrupt/make plays consistently. However, he tends to pop upright at the snap too often and does not get his hands on the offensive linemen quickly which leads to him getting tied up and ridden out of the play -- he does not take on and shed blocks consistently. While he does not use good technique consistently, he does always give a good effort and fights/competes to make plays from snap to whistle. Toughness Clutch Play Production Consistency Team Player Pride/Quit 6.0 6.0 5.5 5.5 6.0 6.0 MENTAL ALERTNESS Section Grade: 5.5 Adams shows smarts in his technique vs. the run (he bends his knees, plays with leverage and uses hands well to get arm extension and keep blockers off him), but he does not have any real pass rush moves to speak of. He has good instincts which help him to burst off the ball quickly and to read and react quickly to the play, but when he plays upright and high, he struggles to consistently react quick enough to make plays. His concentration helps him to consistently play hard from snap to whistle, but he does lose focus at times which is what leads to him playing upright and high more often than he should. Learn/Retain Instincts/Reactions Concentration 5.5 5.5 5.5 STRENGTH/EXPLOSION Section Grade: 6.0 Adams has good size for a defensive tackle -- on film he definitely looks the part, but also seems to be a bit soft bodied and fleshy. He has been a durable player at Nebraska, but to maintain his durability in the NFL he will need to get in better shape and use hands better to keep blockers from getting into his legs. He consistently has shown a good burst off the ball and has an explosive closing burst to the ball to finish plays in pursuit, but despite having a good burst off the ball he does not have the explosiveness to split the gap and get into the backfield consistently. Most of the time, Adams uses his hands well and has the playing strength to hold ground vs. the run and can jolt offensive linemen and get pressure as a power rusher. However, when he pops up at the snap and plays high, he can't hold ground vs. run blocks and does not get a consistent push when he tries to bull rush. "Big, strong, and smart, Adams has the brains and brawn to be a solid NFL defensive lineman. He was an academic all-American at Nebraska and was also versatile enough to play several positions on the field. Adams has a legitimate NFL body and plays with solid technique, excelling as a nose-tackle type who can clog up the running game. The only question mark is a seeming lack of fire in his game. Adams doesn't take plays off but he's not really a high-motor type and that leads to only average numbers. Yet his size, athleticism, and smarts are very promising and sometimes players shift their focus when they hit the NFL."
Sounds like a 3rd-string DT in 4-3/DE in 3/4. But as with any late round pick, you really can't analyze it too much. We just have to wait and see.
Exactly, but what the hell happened to rodrique wright ? Whoa this kid was a first round pick not to long ago. HOly Mackerel
TOO light to be the run stuffing NT we will need. Not a reach for the 7th round but not what we needed either.
we could draft the friggen second coming of Randy Moss - the attitude in round 7 and somene on this site would bitch about it. Look these are 7th round picks for a reason. They aren't going to be studs, or at least APPEAR to be studs.
Pros: He is a naturally big man that has massive thighs and wide base plus the agility to be effective within the tackle box. He is a very thick, fairly mobile tackle that fits well in a zero or one-technique role. He has above average mobility for his size and will give chase very well when the play is to the outside and will make a play on the perimeter. Cons: He will take plays off at times and conditioning is a concern. He has adequate initial quickness at the snap, especially for one so large, although he is heavy-legged and can struggle making plays outside the box late in the game. Numbers: As a senior, he made 50 tackles with five tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. At the Combine, he did 15 reps in the 225-pound bench press and ran a 5.13 time with a 30.5-inch vertical jump and an 8-foot-7 broad jump. Skinny: Good late addition is a real sleeper in this talented DT class and capable of making a club and filling a role in their line rotation and even surprise over time and claim a starting job.
Wrights a bum whos gonna go undrafted. You're seeing a trend where teams are beginning to shy away from overweight, lazy, injury-prone lard asses that cant be depended on. Hawthorne last year, to Watson, Harris, and Wright this year. And itll continue. Hell, even Gilles got the short end of the stick
because the FO oviously wanted Adams over Wright. I don't understand your confusion to this simple principle, it is obvious.
