Hey, I've been out of the loop for a while, taking a long break from posting, but now I'm back! So, lot's of things have heppened since my last visit to TGG. I like that the Jets have been active, but have they been too active? I'm one who believes that as the offensive and defensive lines go, so goes the season. Last year, the OL and DL were pretty bad, and so the season was bad. The obvious soft spots on the OL were LG and RT, both of which have been addressed. The Fanaca signing was a great move. I can't even say enough how much I love this move. The Woody signing I'm a little colder on. I think the Jets way overpaid for him. His tenure with the Lions was mediocre at best. When he signed his big deal with them, he got fat and lazy, and the Jets rewarded him with a deal that was much too big. He is an improvement over Clement, but so is anyone else. The upside to Woody is that he can play any position decently, including center. Mangold has been a warrior at that position, but still, it's nice to have someone who can actuallt play C if need be. Fanaca: A++++ Woody: B- I like the Pace signing, but it's risky. He actually reminds me a lot of Brian Thomas. He's been an absolute bust, except for the last year of his original contract. This is a risky signing, IMO. Yes, the Jets need to upgrade that position, but did they? He's only had one good year. Trading Vilma pretty much had to happen, thanks to uber-stud David Harris' coming out party. I still believe Vilma would have been alright in this system, but I have no issue with the trade. Also, I'm glad they were able to trade Robertson. I've never seen anyone so slow off the snap of the ball. One geat play every 4 weeks or so simply isn't enough. Whatever the Jets got for him in return is OK. Of course, I haven't heard that he passed the physical yet, and I'm not holding my breath that he will. This was the worst move of the bradway era, and I admit to supporting it. How in the world that knee condition ever got past the scouting department is beyond me. Kris Jenkins? I don't hold out a lot of hope for this guy. He's the right size, but is his heart in it? He's a guy that squeeks by on natural talent, btu won't put in the work to get better. I'm pretty worried about this move. Free agency is a mixed bag, and it's a guarentee that not all of these moves will pan out. Still, I think the Jets ar a better team now then they were at teh end of teh season. I also don't believe they are one yet. I have no doubt Coles will be traded on draft day, and I won't be surprised to see a WR taken on day 1. I also still believe that Gholston is the Jets pick, regardless of teh Calvin Pace signing. Don Banks, in his latest mock draft on SI.com, said the Jets will take him as much to keep the Patriots from drafting him as they will because he is an amazing talent. Unless, of course, someone offers a sweet package to move up and take McFadden (both of Dallas' first rounders, anyone?). Personally, I'd have no issue with the Jets taking McFadden and trading Jones, if they can move him. McFadden has the ability to be an immediate impact player, and would be great teamed up with my favorite Jet, my man Leon Washington. It's nice to be back, boys
Drob trade has already fallen through. Depending on who you read it was because of money, his knee, or something else....
Good to have you back- you might have missed the last few days info re: Robertson- he's still a Jet as the deal fell through.
Hmm. I was afraid that would happen. I hope that they move him to end this year. Maybe he can be a bit more effective there than at NT. I doubt it, though. He's just not fast enough off the snap to be effective. In all likelyhood, he's out of football in a couple of years.
Good to see you back here, Tony. I see yours (an a few others) reason for the Pace-Bryan Thomas comparison. But one stat that stood out for Pace that sets him apart is that Pace had 98 tackles and 6 passes defensed last season. Thomas in contrast, only had 77 tackles and no passes defensed in his contract year. This tells me Pace is a better player at the point of attack and in coverage. It looks like he does things that Thomas cannot.
Ok, well I agree with pretty much everything you wrote except for McFadden. He might be great and future hall of famer ... but then again, he might not. I doubt we would even get a 2nd round pick for Thomas Jones. I like Jones and Washington with our revamped line ... and completely kosher with picking a RB in round 7 or even a couple of FA signings after the draft as back up insurance. Ideally, I would love to trade down from the 6th pick (especially with the Cowboys) and draft a CB and LB (not a fan of Barton). In the 2nd round I would go for RT (not sold on Woody being a solid RT) or WR. The main thing now is that going into the draft we have options ... we don't have to address so many needs. If we stay at 6 ... Gholston seems like a freak of nature and would look good on our team! So we have at least addressed our biggest problem with our team last year in free agency - OL and DL. It is simply brutal to not be able to stop the run and to not be able to run on teams. Sure we don't have much of a deep threat either, but can't fix everything at once. Correcting line issues will put the team in even better positions to win games, at least. It is also reassuring to see weight clauses in Jenkins contract - should keep him a little healthier (hopefully). Furthermore, it is nice to see the Jets using the cap to their advantage ... it does no good having an extra 10 million that you sit on all year. Granted as long as there is enough to sign Rhodes longterm.
profootball talk and the boston globe are just 2 sources that give pace high marks----the jet o line was so awful last year woody and feneca are tremendous upgrades good start for jets ---but hope they are not finished ---too many holes to fill offense has no juice---defense with jenkins and pace figure to be better jets 2008 sched has only 5 games against teams with winning records playoffs within reach if jets continue to improve offense ---need more weapons and more depth on o line
