Thomas Jones unlikely to get restructured deal May 22, 2009 If disgruntled RB Thomas Jones shows up next Wednesday for the Jets' next OTA practice, as his Twittering agent announced the other day, it won't be with a restructured contract, the Daily News has learned. Jones has two years remaining on the four-year, $20 million contract he signed when he was traded by the Bears, and that deal apparently will remain intact. There was some speculation earlier this week that perhaps the Jets had agreed to re-do Jones' deal. Not so. In that sense, the Jets won their stare down with Jones, who has been boycotting voluntary workouts. There's always the chance they got him back by promising to address his contract in the future, assuming he's a good soldier. That's how they placated TE Chris Baker and WR Laveranues Coles. In Jones' case, though, I'm not sure that will work. After making $13.1 million in the first two years of the contract, Jones is scheduled to earn $900,000 this season. At 31, he wants fast cash, not a promise in 2010. Heck, he might not be around in 2010, when he's due to make $5.8 million (including a $3 million roster bonus) - a hefty salary for an aging running back. Jones, who led the AFC in rushing, sees this as his last chance to make another score. But the Jets don't want to turn into an ATM machine. It'll be interesting to hear Jones' take next Thursday, when the media are allowed at practice. http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/2009/05/thomas-jones-unlikely-to-get-r.html I'm happy they aren't giving him a new deal. If any of the RB's get a new deal i hope it's Washington because he can be around much longer and be a more effective player.
While I don't believe Jones deserves that much, I feel bad for him. Guys like Gholston make 8 times that amount and he hasn't done siht. Jones was at least the AFC rushing leader last year. Now I know the potential of Gholston is much higher than Jones at this point, but I hate how these young players make so much money from their rookie contracts. I also have a feeling Bryan Thomas is making more than Jones at the moment as well...
Yeah i'm not sure on the numbers but there is a good chance Thomas might be making more. I also feel bad that he is not making any money since he was the AFC leading rusher and all, but the year before he made a ton of money and didn''t do anything. So to me, it evens itself out.
Yeah but two years ago, the Jets fielded the most pathetic offensive line I think in history...and Thomas Jones still rushed for 1,000 yards. I mean he's a solid guy, I don't think he's even a power back (sometimes I see a better motor on Leon), but he knows how to get the yards. He's like a poor mans version of Curtis Martin in his style (not in his ability), he has a knack for getting the yards. While I'm more than happy to see Greene to step it up, I like the three runningback solution right now. I don't want a question mark at QB, WR AND RB this year.
TJones lined his pockets quite well in the first 2 years of his deal....he doesn't get any sympathy from me at ALL. He signed a contract......time to honor it.
exactly... he knew the deal was going to be played out this way. he tried to help himself at the table and the Jets kindly told him off. He has to deal with it.
How much money has he received from us so far? I still think we should guarantee some of his future money.
13.1 mil over the last two years. That's enough for the leading afc rusher of 08, but since he's now on the wrong side of 30, his remaining contract is probably enough to see him through.
Because he was the leading rusher in the AFC last year. And why not? As long as it doesn't affect our salary cap situation.
If Jones is goign to be mad at anyone, let him be mad at the agent who agreed to the deal in the first place with such a back loaded last year. This playes right into the Jets hands.
We signed him to a brand new spanking deal when we made the trade for him. He negotiated for more in the first 2 years then the last 2. So he gets 70% in the first 2 and then says he's not happy in year 3 at his age!!! You gotta be kidding me, no way, he does not get one penny extra or any guaranteed and there is nothing he can do. Next March when we release him, he can look for more money and in know way am I saying that we don't need or I don't want him this year.
I understand where he is coming from. He is getting old had the best season of his career. He figures his value will never be higher. He is not getting more money in a year or 2. That being said he did get paid.
Jones was the 7th pick for AZ and basically was an injury prone dissapointment. Got paid big bucks. Got 10 Million from the Bears as an FA and another big payday from us. At the end of the day Jones is a decent not great back who will have an NFL career that pays him north of 30 million. I don't see how anyone can cry for this guy based on the financial hardship he has had to face as an NFL player.
Richardson was re-signed and the OL are making good money this year (Mangold will most likely receive a contract extension soon.
