I guarantee we’ll win it this year.” We all know how that worked out: an 8-8 season highlighted by locker-room in-fighting, the failure of quarterback Mark Sanchez to progress, and the Giants bypassing them as the best team in New York made Ryan’s bravado look misguided. Now, Ryan returns to Indianapolis as the Jets begin the process of building their 2012 team with tons of questions. LOUD & PROUD: Jets coach Rex Ryan wasn’t shy about issuing a Super Bowl guarantee at last year’s Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Today will be the first day to see if Ryan has toned down his act. AP LOUD & PROUD: Jets coach Rex Ryan wasn’t shy about issuing a Super Bowl guarantee at last year’s Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Today will be the first day to see if Ryan has toned down his act. The first will get answered today when Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum meet with the media. UPDATES FROM OUR JETS BLOG It will be interesting to see if we get the “New Rex” that was talked about so much in January or if he reverts to his usual, bold self when the TV cameras and recorders go on. The Jets have holes at outside linebacker, safety, tackle and wide receiver to fill. But this won’t be just about scouting college players, although that is the primary function of the combine. It also serves as a de facto NFL convention, with agents and executives everywhere you look. With free agency coming on March 13, the Jets surely have their plans drawn up, and now it is time to start putting them in motion. Though they technically cannot talk to agents for players under contract with another team until free agency begins, informal discussions take place here. Teams can also talk trades. The window to make trades does not begin until March 13, but seeds can be planted. Two years ago the Jets began talking to the Chargers about acquiring cornerback Antonio Cromartie here. Tannenbaum surely will meet with agents for some of the Jets’ own free agents — 11 of whom are unrestricted. The most notable of those is starting nose tackle Sione Pouha. The Jets are expected to try hard to bring back Pouha, who was a huge run-stopper last season. The Jets also may need to convince some of their players to restructure their deals. According to multiple reports, the Jets are right at the projected 2012 salary cap. That means they are going to have to release some players as well as find ways to move money around. Peyton Manning talk surely will circulate this week, with the combine taking place in Manning’s backyard. The Jets have given no indication they will pursue the Colts quarterback if he becomes a free agent. That hasn’t stopped speculation that Gang Green could be the landing spot for the future Hall of Famer.
