We need to try to recreate 2004 on draft day and grab a franchise LT and C. D'Brick and Mangold should be fine for one more season but their play is deteriorating and their salaries are not. Next year it really behooves the Jets to give both of the their gold watches. Brick has a 15 million cap hit 2016 and accounts or 10 million in savings if cut before June 1st. Mangold has a 9 million dollar cap hit and accounts for 9 million in savings. Needless to say it behooves the Jets to find a replacement.
You can't just target positions like that. There is no LT worth a top 6 pick this year. Gotta go BPA. That said, you're right about Brick's contract. He must be restructured next year and we have to find his replacement soon.
No, we shouldn't. We don't have two first round picks, and you don't need to draft both in one draft. Mangold is still playing at a very high level, and his play hasn't deteriorated that much. Brick and the LT position is the one that is getting critical. Besides, the Jets may already have Mangold's replacement on the roster in Dalton Freeman.
Outside QB, a stud LT and his counterpart pass rushing OLB are the two hardest positions to fill. Teams really can't wait until the need someone and just grab anyone, especially LT. I know this draft is soft in LTs, but I would say as soon as we have a shot at a good/great on, either through the draft or trade, get it done, even if it means passing on another more glamorous skill position. Make it happen Macc!
Mangold is fine, D'Brick lets see how his year goes, but we can't keep him at that cap number. He probably re-does his deal...I hope, we need our core guys
Zack Martin last year would have been a home run. Unfortunately, Jerry Jones caved. And Idzik was locked in on his safety from Louisville.
I am all about us addressing the o-line in a big way this year, but that's more than little extreme. If we can trade down from the 6 and turn thar into multiple picks in the first two rounds, then ok. We need to come out of this draft with some potential at LT and at the guard positions, but we also have needed to pick a pass rushing linebacker since, um, yeah, forever.
The best draft in our history was in 1977. We took the following players: Code: Round Overall Player Position Birthdate College 1 4 Marvin Powell OT 08/30/1955 Southern California 2 33 Wesley Walker WR 05/26/1955 California 3 72 Tank Marshall DT 01/06/1955 Texas A&M 4 90 Scott Dierking RB 05/24/1955 Purdue 5 116 Perry Griggs WR 09/17/1954 Troy State 5 129 Gary Gregory OT 04/18/1955 Baylor 6 144 Joe Klecko DT 10/15/1953 Temple 7 168 Charlie White RB 08/31/1953 Bethune-Cookman 7 171 Bob Grupp P 05/08/1955 Duke 7 195 Kevin Long RB 01/20/1955 South Carolina 8 200 Dan Alexander OG 06/17/1955 Louisiana State 8 210 Ed Thompson LB 10/06/1954 Ohio State 9 227 Matt Robinson QB 06/28/1955 Georgia 10 256 John Hennessy LB 03/12/1955 Michigan 11 307 Dave Butterfield DB 07/29/1954 Nebraska 12 312 Phil Gargis RB 07/06/1955 Auburn 12 313 Dave Conrad OT 10/27/1953 Maryland So we should take OT, WR, DT, RB in the first four rounds. Since we don't have a fifth round pick we skip WR and OT and proceed to take a DT in round 6. We only have two seventh rounders so it is up to us if we should take two RBs or an RB plus a punter. If we stick to the plan this year is sure to tie 1977 for our best draft ever.
I love the idea of drafting two o-linemen high like we did with Brick and Mangold and with that big cap hit next year Brick has to go. But this might mot be the year to draft a tackle.
Klecko in the 6th round? Sweet!!! Thanks for the history lesson. Powell, Alexander, one-eyed Wesley Walker, AND Klecko all in the same draft? Incredible. I remember Manish Metha blasting us for selecting a "legally blind wide receiver".
i really like the idea of trading mar iota (if available at 6) to the browns for 2 first rounders - makes my pants bulge
You are right about addressing OL in the draft. Not sure about the #6 pick, but round 2 and 3 should be OL. Too many years of Rex Ryan drafting defense has hurt.
One year the Raiders drafted a RB named Joe Aska who was blind in one eye. Al Davis said it was OK because it was the same eye that is patched in the Raiders logo.
I don't see center as a need. Mangold is still playing at a high level. I think he probably has a few good years left in this league definitely more than 1 or 2.
While I would never put it past Manish Metha saying something stupid, you sure about this one? I only ask because I don't think Metha was around or on the scene at the time Walker was drafted, and if he was blasting the pick in retrospect (looking at the career Walker's had) that would be stupid as well.
I'm on board with targeting OL. I'm not sure we can secure a Brick replacement in this draft, but over the next 2 years, we'll have to replace at least 2 of Brick, Breno & Mangold with younger/cheaper replacements. We could also use OG help as well. If anything, we may be more likely to land Breno's replacement than Brick's in this draft. I'm all in favor of landing a guy that can start at OG this year & kick out to OT next year.
