He scored a touchdown in each of the Jets’ three postseason games.Jets tight end Dustin Keller, who is a budding restaurateur, will write a food column once a month for the Fifth Down. He’ll also answer football questions from readers. Post your question in the comments section, and he’ll answer a sampling within a week. Dustin starts off with a look at one of his favorite restaurants in New York. Restaurant review for Peter Luger Steakhouse 178 Broadway, Brooklyn I’m from Indiana. I was born there, I grew up there, I played college football there, and I go back home every chance I get. Indiana is known for a few things: basketball fanatics, rows of corn as far as the eye can see, a great big racetrack, and steakhouses. I love New York, and when the Jets drafted me in 2008 I knew I was headed to the greatest city in the world. But to make me feel at home, I knew I had to find a great steak place. Well, I found it. Peter Luger Steakhouse, on the other side of the Williamsburg Bridge, is amazing. It’s the best steak place I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to my fair share of steak joints. Let’s just say I’ve made more trips to Peter Luger’s since I’ve been here than I’ve made back home to Indiana. There’s one thing Peter Luger Steakhouse is really known for: the Porterhouse steak. I usually start with the extra thick bacon and sliced tomato, which are amazing together, and some cocktail shrimp. Then comes their porterhouse – I’ve yet to find a better one. When they bring it to your table, it’s already cut into several long pieces, and their signature sauce that comes with it is amazing. There’s just something about it that’s hard to explain. It’s kind of tangy with a kick of horseradish. It gets your attention right away and compliments the taste of the steak. Usually, I eat some of the steak with the sauce, and some bites without. It’s like calling an audible at the line before each bite. I normally don’t like steak sauces, but it’s different at Peter Luger’s. You’re cheating yourself if you don’t at least try it. Mix in the best creamed spinach I’ve ever had, along with the home fries, and you have my favorite steak dinner. Follow it up with any of their desserts, you just can’t go wrong, but I love their strawberries and “schlag” a.k.a. whipped cream. Something else I like about Peter Luger’s is just the overall feel of the restaurant. It’s the friendliest environment, and regardless of your wait (which is never long), time passes fast because of great conversation with the waiters, managers, and bartenders that are passing by. You know how some steak places seem so stuffy and full of themselves? Peter Luger’s isn’t like that. It’s just a nice, warm feeling with the dark wood and exposed brick in the bar area. The overall experience is great. Come with a positive attitude and you’ll leave with an even better one. The food is top-notch and the service is among the best I’ve ever had. Any of the Long Islanders feel as though they're reading a review from a member of the "Kidsday" team?
Seriously, NYT, you have him review Peter Luger's? Is there anyone in the tri-state area who isn't acutely aware of its awesomeness? And yes, that steak sauce is fucking incredible.
I'm pleased for him that he's a good football player, because if we're honest his alternative career choice doesn't seem to hold a huge amount of promise.
You don't say? Starting TE on the New York Jets and they treat you will eh? Keane's > Peter Lugers. FACT.
I thought the article would be about his hunger to get back to the AFC championship game and beyond. Very literal I guess-
Put restaurant review in the thread title to save some of us time from opening this thread...I thought I was about to read about a new found hunger to score more touchdowns. Hey..its the slow season...carry on.
Was that sarcasm? I don't really know if it's a well known place or not, but when I worked at Sirius I was ALL ABOUT DelFriscos. Amazing food.
the reason peter lugers is the best is because of the special steak aging fridges that they have. you cant get them anymore because companies are not allowed to manufacture them because of health laws or something. if keller eats there so much his dumb ass should have known this
The reason Peter Luger's is so good is because they only use meat from the freshest dead bums they find in back alleys.
you read my mind on that one. if you're playing for any of the local sports teams, even the nets, you're gonna get treated like royalty. most normal patrons are never gonna see the light of "It’s the friendliest environment, and regardless of your wait (which is never long), time passes fast because of great conversation with the waiters, managers, and bartenders that are passing by. " that's an absolute joke of a comment. i like luger's as much as the next guy, but i would never call any of my experiences there being characterized as "friendly" or never being a long wait, regardless of reservations made weeks in advance. and although the sauce is, in fact, awesome, i only use it on bread or the lettuce wedge...never on the actual meat. i'm a purist. ...oh, and i've been dying to try keane's. looks like they make a pretty kickass ribeye, my favorite.
