Brick's best work was a 2-for-1 downfield block
    BY TOM ROCK
    Newsday Staff Writer
    August 21, 2006

When the Jets scored their first touchdown of the preseason, it was a rookie who made the play by using the speed, agility and field sense the team drooled over when it drafted him. No, not Brad Smith. All he did was run the 61 yards for the score on a reverse.

The rookie who really popped eyes was D'Brickashaw Ferguson, the starting left tackle.

Smith's touchdown was made possible by a slew of blocks. Quarterback Patrick Ramsey ran just enough interference to keep Renaldo Wynn off Smith in the backfield. Center Nick Mangold flipped cornerback Mike Rumph head-over-feet to open the first few yards. Wide receiver Laveranues Coles and guard Pete Kendall double-teamed safety Adam Archuleta into the ground at the 45-yard line.

But it was Ferguson's block, 25 yards from the line of scrimmage and on the opposite side of the field from where he lined up, that gave Smith the final daylight he needed. Ferguson rolled over both cornerback Pierson Prioleau and linebacker Lemar Marshall with the grace of a 312-pound ballerina.

"It felt good," Ferguson said of taking out the 185-pound Prioleau, knocking him into Marshall like a bowling pin to pick up the spare. "I can't complain."

Why is Tom Rock writing about football at a time like this? Doesn't he know how oppressed the New York Sports Media is???

Is anyone else genuinely looking forward to reading Rock's articles. He's certainly a breath of fresh air and the best thing to happen to the NY media in some time.

It's nice to read about D'Brick's block, rather than D'Brick following coaches orders and not giving impromptu interviews in the parking lot.

Rock has substance to his articles.............not a cry baby. So far so good!!!

Rich C will be gone in a year or so too, that wussy won't travel from LI to the Jets in Floram Park, NJ.

this draft is looking better and better each week. Not getting crazy or excited, but at least we seem to be cultivating talented and athletic players that will give us some hope for the future.

I noticed that block on the highlights package and didn't realize it was D'brick.
The bowling pin analogy fits the play very well.

With a name like that Aussies would nickname him D'Brick Shithouse.

Someone who is "built like a brick shithouse" is an enormous bloke resembling a brick toilet block, like you see in a public park.

To be fair, Ken Berger (the writer he replaced) was this way as well. Must be the unique Newsday philosophy. My favorite newspaper (because Hofstra gives it to students for free)

On the replay it did look like bowling pins. It was so cool I had to chuckle, in fact.

I am SO damned glad we drafted this guy!

I just went back and watched that. I guess when watching it for the first time your so focused on Smith with the speed and shiftiness. At first I thought those two ran into eachother. Da'Brick was waiting for those two guys. He was totally in poistion facing the other way and just picked up the spare for sure. That's some speed if you ask me.

I can see Mangini putting him in there on offense like a Vrabel or refridgerator Perry! The possibilities................LOL

IT was an impressive play no doubt but the block that was most important was made by Mangold..
