SI's Peter King thinks the Texans are "seriously considering" letting Mario Williams walk in free agency. The Texans' defense remained dominant even after Williams (torn pectoral) was lost for the season in Week 5. Youngsters J.J. Watt and Brooks Reed proved to be more than capable replacements, combining for seven sacks in two playoff games. Although the Texans have publicly stated otherwise, it's possible that breaking the bank for Williams won't be a priority. What do you think???
WHAT DO I THINK?! SIGN THIS BEAST... I honestly don't care if we get put in cap hell this guy is what this defense is missing
Tanny would have to do some major restructuring of current deals to get this done plus at least one other fill-in starter at RT or S before the draft with money left to sign our rooks. But this is the type of player that would rejuvenate the defense and bring it back to where it was in 09. Honestly, Sanchez should take X amount of his money and say I will collect only if certain personal statistical goals are met. He's probably the most undeserving of his contract.
If they are willing to let him walk I would be seriously worried about what kind of physical problems he may have.
Did u read what Peter King wrote? The Texans defense did remain dominant after Mario went down. If you can get good production from younger players like Reed and Watt there is no need to sign Mario to a monster contract when you can fill other needs. Im sure Mario is healthy and ready to go.
The Aso sweepstakes was this. But Williams? An every down passrusher? Help mentor Mo? Have Pouha and Devito by him? Sign This Beast!
It was a torn pec. It's not like the guy broke his neck. When a defense does what they did with only 5 games of Williams, you save the bank-breaking blockbuster contract and you fill other needs. Williams is still sort of a question mark as an OLB, don't let the 5 sacks fool you, he was struggling a lot in run support in his first season as OLB. It's not like the Texans are whiffing on a sure thing by not signing him to a huge contract.
I don't get him being an OLB. I thought he was supposed to be a Richard Seymour type as a 3-4 defensive end.
Very close! Seymour was a good 3-4 DE but better at the 4-3. Williams is a great 4-3 DE, who was learning to play OLB in the 3-4, not DE. Phillips was working with him to learn how to play the 3-4 OLB spot when he got hurt. While he was coming around, there's no guarantee he will be as effective in that position. If the Jets are going to put out the kind of coin it'll take to get this guy, they better be 100% certain he'll fit their scheme. The Jets money may be better spent bringing in a group of good players to fill their many holes rather than chew up another chunk of money on yet another big name. Woody and Tanny need to remember big names only sell tix if you win!
We are in the market for an OLB. He's got no knee/leg/foot problems, a torn pectoral shouldn't hinder him long term. I highly doubt we'd have the cap room for him but an inquiry should be made. Like others have said, he's not proven in the 3-4.
That pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter. The Jets shouldn't break the bank on a guy who they aren't certain can fit their scheme, and Williams shouldn't even consider signing with a team that runs the 3-4 (he's a beast as a 4-3 end, why wouldn't he go back to a team that runs that defense?)
